The Concerto in A minor for Oboe and Strings was written by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1943-44 for the oboist Léon Goossens, to whom the score is dedicated.
Vaughan Williams began work on the Oboe Concerto in 1943, immediately after completing the Fifth Symphony, with which it shares a great deal. Amongst other things, the concerto began as a revision of a scherzo movement originally intended for the symphony (Heffer 2000, 106). The concerto was to have been premiered at a Proms concert on 5 July 1944, but due to the threat of V1 rocket raids on London the Proms season was curtailed. The piece was first played in Liverpool instead, on 30 September 1944 in a concert by the Liverpool Philharmonic, conducted by Malcolm Sargent, that also included the Oboe Concerto by the soloist's brother, Eugène Goossens (Anon. 1944; Biggar 1997, 12).
This pastoral piece is divided into three movements:
    -Rondo Pastorale (Allegro moderato)
    -Minuet and Musette (Allegro moderato)
-Scherzo (Presto - Doppio più lento - Lento - Presto)
The concerto has an element of cyclic form.

This *always* takes me back to the part of England I grew up in fifty years ago. So evocative, I can see it in front of me. Every damn' time!

The first time I heard this concerto was on Classical Radio. I know many of Vaughan Williams's pieces and though I hadn't heard this before I recognized that he was the composer. I just sounds like his music. It's beautiful.

Nice! livelier than some, and then the final note played as if it's just another note, before I could even begin to long for it, like a final kiss goodbye that was a handshake instead.

I think driven by an inner reflection of a kinder time for Vaughn williams, perhaps remembering England before the Great War and WW2.

Pretty sad that in the states, we never get to hear any of this music live, in concert. We are totally dependent on recording companies to hear these tunes.

I feel like the most likely place to hear this is with a college chamber orchestra and a faculty member or grad student as soloist. It doesn't get on the big city orchestra concerts, for sure.

Universities are generally going to be the best places to hear anything that isn't mainstream. There's much less politics, and there's no concerns about who's getting paid how much per year.
Also, keep an eye on any universities that have annual (or biennual) concerto competitions - we can always dream that a woodwind will beat out the strings some day😅
