Sangmin Ryu – Lumi signifie la neige for Piano(2020)(with full score)
Pf. Midi
Sang-Min Ryu (b.2000) is a sophomore in the Department of Composition and Philosophy at Hanyang University in Seoul, Korea. He began to learn composition at the age of 19, and is actively involved in composing along with piano recital planning and arrangement of choral songs. He has 'mathematics' and 'philosophy' as his interests, and attempts to operate 'logical thinking' in mathematics and 'humanistic gaze' in philosophy in music. He will be an orchestra conductor in the future, and he will also write a number of books on music.
-Text
The snow is white, Lumi is black. Little girl, where are you going?" asks the crow. Lumi searches for his friend's house. But how to find it without the sun.
In this country, everything is black. In this country, everything is white. Lumi means know in Finish, in Santa's country, where everything is cold.
-Program Note
"The song begins with the chord 'B + C' of a half-tone relationship, which expresses a landscape covered with snow. The chord in this high range acts as a material that penetrates the entire music piece, and is represented by a plot structure in which Rumi finds his identity (or attribute). The chords were composed according to the sequential flow of time in a fairy tale book and composed of Transformed Arch Form called
"A - B - C - B' - A' - Coda. "
'Lumi signifie la neige' is the part that depicts how Lumi finds her identity. Sections A and B express that Lumi is black, but the snow surrounding her is white. These contrasting attributes were divided into many leaps, fast notes and stepwise motion, slow ones. In Section C, she asks where she is headed through the crowl. However, Lumi realized that there is no such thing as the Sun that will light the way to her destination. These Crowl Motives and Lumi's Footprints Motives are arranged alternately to describe the situation of the conversation like Question - Answer.
In Section B' and A', Lumi realizes that everything in this country is made up of black and white. Furthermore, Coda recognizes that her name derives from snow with white properties. In the snowy landscape, the gentle breeze rises to staccato, and the strong wind descends to Glissando. Between these sounds, the song ends with an inserted view of the scenery, indicating the steps of Lumi.
This piece premiered on June 11, 2020 at Hanyang University's Paiknam Music Center in Seoul and at Hanyang University's Composition Workshop Final Concert. Later, this piece will be revised into a large scale Piano Etude about 15 minutes.

Egon Schiele painted numerous self-portraits, until his death, as he constantly fumbled at his figure. I always wondered that too. From what I found online, the 2nd and 3rd measures are slightly different. The highest octaves are replaced with a G instead of a Bb and B to account for the 85-key pianos back then. Cool to know after so long lol :)
