Glad to see this episode back on YT.
In the first round, there was no other eight but BOVINES was another seven.
In the second round, the contestants and Dictionary Corner got both sevens, but SUNNED and SUNDEW were both there for six.
In the third round, MALATES was there for seven.
In the first numbers round, I saw Carol's solution, but also had these alternatives:
10 x 10 x 9 = 900
6 x 6 = 36
900 - 36 = 864
And I factored (3^3 x 2^5 = 864) for this solution:
10 + 6 = 16
16 x 9 x 6 = 864
In the seventh round, LANDTIES were also there for eight.
In the second numbers round, there was no way to use the factors (53 x 13 = 689), but I was able to spot this alternative solution:
10 x 6 = 60
60 + 9 = 69
69 x 50 = 3450
3450 / 5 = 690
690 - 1 = 689
Got the conundrum at about four seconds.
BOUVIERS?
@@sdkelmaruecan2907 It's a large, shaggy-coated Belgian dog breed. The full name is "bouviers des Flandres", which literally translated from the French means "cowherds from Flanders" and gives one a notion of what the dogs were bred for.
The way Ned Sherrin talks to the dictionary expert and says that Carol is showing off is embarrassing.
He was a joker. Don't take it so seriously.

That is strange - did "steamily" escape the dictionary sometime between Episode 770 and Episode 857?
It's in the OED now so unless it's a new addition I don't see why it was disallowed. Different lexicographer?
@@JoelyT2000 Georgia Hole wasn't exactly a long-term addition to the team... so yes, maybe that was the issue.
Ned’s finding in round 3 would be allowed now.

Ned Sherrin was too far up his own arse. He was exactly the same when he hosted a Treasure Hunt Special where Kenneth Kendall and Anneka Rice were the contestants.

The picture in this video is a bit dodgy and badly cropped, here.
This episode was recorded on Betamax tape with distorted left and right margins, so Mr Countdowngoofs has cropped it to eliminate the distortion.
simple way to get 864 is 9 x 10 x 10 = 900 - (6x6) = 864 or am I missing something.
Surely Carol got that, but chose to do a more difficult way?

Later that year Carol Vorderman did the letter & number picking as well as giving the solutions to the maths round. Pleased me because back then I had a crush on Carol Vorderman. Not anymore!
