    Preservation of US Railroad heritage, hasn't quite reached the level it has in Britain. Where we are very lucky to have over 800 steam locos preserved, with around 60% of them in working order at any one time. Indeed we are so in love with the steam locomotive we have started buildind NEW ones of types we scrapped, before we realised what a MEGA business steam trains are. Steam train tourism in Britain is now worth over $9.5 BILLION U.S DOLLARS Annually. Steam train tourism has also added over 1 Million extra full time jobs. Not bad when you realise the whole of Britain will fit into Texas more than twice !!!

    Hi Nick.
    That shay that you were looking at was the very first engine that the Museum got back in the 60s. I got to ride on it when it was brought to Strasburg from the lumber company. I have pictures of me as a kid on the front of that engine. I was 4 years old then.
    The other power and light engine is sitting out at oak's PA.

    The Pennslvania Railroad was electrified all the way from Pittsburg to New Haven. Both the electric locos seen including the GG1 are pre WW2 designs. The first GG1 entering service on Jan 28th 1935. Indeed the Pennsy's electrified mainline is the only long distance electrified route remaining in the USA ! In Europe virtually ALL mainlines & many secondary routes are electrified, for the simple reason that ONE electric loco can do the work of 2 or even 3 diesel locos, are fare less affected by gradients, & produce almost NO pollution !

    • @RRose-ie8oh
      @RRose-ie8oh Před rokem

      Though the Pennsylvania Railroad studied electrifying the line over the mountains to Pittsburgh, it never built the catenary for that. WWII and the development of diesels ended the need for electric operation west of Harrisburg.
