    This scene is key to understanding more of Carmela. She loves feeling better than others, so as soon as Hunter mentions she is doing great now Carm instantly drops the conversation, because she can no longer pick on Hunter and feel superior because of Hunter's shortcomings. its so gold

      Wrong.... Carm likes to brag on her kids and rub it into people's faces how great they are doing. If you don't have an Italian mother then you wouldn't understand. She used to light up when telling people Meadow was going to be a pediatrician because of the salary and status that goes with being a doctor. Lawyers are a dime a dozen but a doctor is something to be proud of. Undoubtedly (if Carmella was real and similar to my mother) she would have researched the salary an above average pediatrician would make because of course she is going to be above average. Around the turn of the century pediatricians started around $100k so a bit above would be $120k or so. She never even entertained the fact that Meadow could become a highly skilled highly sought after litigator. She realized that when $170k got tossed around. It wasn't that she had to feel superior to Hunter but Meadow had to be superior to Hunter. What your kids become as adults reflects directly onto you as a parent. Seems to only be a thing with Italians and the Asian community.

      I wasn't impressed with this scene, it was way too obvious - usually they can be at least believably subtle. But Carm just drops the conversation almost rudely when she realizes things are going well lol? It's kind of weird, she's not going to feel competitive with this young woman in school, either for herself or for meadow. And Hunter isn't a looker, I just can't see her bringing out that rudeness in carm so crazily. IDK. It's weird

    • @maaz322

      I don't think it was being a scumbag. We all know someone who was always an irresponsible joke in life that we weren't afraid to joke about, and they don't really take it seriously since they are lighthearted themselves. Carmella likely knew her since she was a child, and she probably constantly did dumb things at their house, like pissing in the pool or getting in trouble with the neighbors. To find out she is now in a higher station than smarty pants, goodie-two-shoes meadow is hard to hear. If the biggest joke of a person you knew earned a really prestigious title through reform and hardwork, surpassing your daughter who always showed precocious intellect and some maturity, it's hard to feel good about yourself. Especially since she partied, got a DUI, and kicked out of college. But people just like to criticize and make sweeping generalizations about the fictional character rather than reflect on themselves and recognize this behavior inwardly.

In the end, patsy was still on point with his gun ready during the war with New York, Sil was slipping with his piece in his bag. Patsy did what he could but he had to save his own life to somehow see this right. In the end, Paulie became head honcho with patsy as his consigliere. First: Seeing her daughters troublesome friend got her shit together by being in medschool and actually being every parents dream child.
    Second: The chance of her daughter still being successful and independent.
    And last the most important: Meadow being with someone who is actually her soulmate, being more equal and encouraging never make feel less about herself.
    These things that Carmela knew she could have had or like that got thrown away for lots of blood money, gifts, big house, crappy marrige that has now become a form of partnership for a spec house. Now its to late for her being the fact that this is the last episode.

If he was going to do something like that it would have been years earlier. He considered it but decided not to. We see this with Meadow's friend who kicked her drug habit and is now in Medical School, with Artie's wife who both runs the restaurant and has slept with Tony prior to Carmela meeting him, with Big Pussy's widow Angie, who was poor after he died but bounced back up as a business woman, and finally with her own daughter Meadow who's studying to become a lawyer. Though she loves her privileged life, Carmela hates that she's not self sufficient like those who have surpassed her. She tried getting rich through the bird feeder money via stocks, but failed. She tried getting rich through her spec house bur failed. Ironically in her attempts to surpass her successful friends and loose her dependency on her husband , her failed attempts were all on Tony's dime.

    If you notice Patsy’s wife clumsily attempts the joke _twice_ before Patsy finally takes over and tells it. Like the _two_ attempts Meadow makes to parallel park later in the episode before finally succeeding on the third try. These cinematic elements mirror the two attempts on Tony’s life in the series before he is finally killed at the diner (the first when he was shot at by the African American man while walking to his car, the second when Junior shot him on the pancreas). This scene foreshadows that Patsy had Tony executed- he would have known where Tony was eating that night because Meadow is dating his son Patrick.

It should also be noted that the show has always been about Tony's two families and Daddies little girl Meadow is making the transition to become part of Patsys' family foreshadowing that the Soprano name and dynasty will become second tier to that of Parisi.

      D G Paulie was always superstitious of responsibility like when he turned down the construction racket job Tony offered him after Gigi died. Paulie was never an earner or business man type but just a two bit hustler and leech. I highly doubt he would have been respected enough or even be willing to step up as boss if it was offered to him. Patsy would be the best choice now that Christopher is dead and Silvio still recovering from being shot in the war.

    • @nobad6134
      @nobad6134 Před 5 lety +3

      @D G Paulie was only big with Johnny Sac who he snitched on New Jersey with. But remember Carmine Lupertazzi Sr didn't even know ho the heck he was after all the dirt he did for NY. Paulie only rose through the ranks through old age and just being there. His best earning happened in comedic attempts at heists like the Colombian drug dealers raid. Nothing ever went on smoothly when he was involved in a field mission. All he really had was Little Paulie doing his dirty work. I reckon Little Paulie would be a better boss than Walnuts. Only thing Paulie had going on was knowing how to stay alive in the mob for himself but he couldn't inspire a big group of men.
      Sopranos crew after the war would have been decimated anyway. The final captains towards the end where Carlo (an informant), Bobby (dead), Paulie (screwed up in the head and too old) and Sylvio (critically injured). All the guys with talent died out of Tony's ego- Ralphie, Christopher, Eugene. Gigi would have been a good boss if he was still alive.
      The war truce was made and from then on Patsy would have been fine. Both sides tried to kill each other including Tony Soprano himself. I also think Patsi was just a bystander and the hit was really targeted on Sylvio who was number 2 at the time. Patsi is the more shrewd guy than Paulie. Look how he raised his kid into being a top lawyer and has a stable home life. Gets into no unnecessary beefs but still has balls to be aggressive when needed. Knows his brother was axed by Tony but made his peace with the dangers of their way of life.
