  • Spearfishing 101 Series Part 8; Open vs Closed Muzzle Spearguns
Buying spearfishing gear as a beginner spearo can be overwhelming. There’s a lot of gear options, and it can be hard to know what’s right for you. If you’re planning on buying a speargun, one of the questions you may be asking is whether to choose an open or closed muzzle. If you’re not sure which one to buy, read on to learn how to make the right choice.
    Closed muzzle spearguns
It’s important to know the differences and similarities between open and closed muzzle spearguns. One of their similarities is that both muzzle types can support a single and double band configuration, and they can also be changed easily. However, a closed muzzle has a small tunnel that the spear passes through which keeps the spear in place, and a closed muzzle does not hold the spear right to the rail. It's the line that holds the shaft into the inner position. In loading the spear up using a closed muzzle, insert the back end of the spear into the muzzle first and then guide it back into the trigger mechanism. When loading, especially if you are a beginner spearo, it can sometimes slip. But don’t worry, once you get the hang of using closed muzzles, you’ll be just fine.
    Open muzzle spearguns
Open muzzles, on the other hand, have no tunnels to keep the spear in place. You have a clear run all the way. The good thing about an open muzzle is that when you've got it loaded, there's nothing between you and the fish. There's no overlying plastic or anything blocking your line of sight. So you can look down the spear with your vision unimpeded. You can also easily load it without having to insert the back end of the spear through the muzzle. One important thing to know is that when you shoot the gun, you get a loop of line developing as the spear goes out. Now with a closed muzzle, the loop has to go through the muzzle. But with an open muzzle, even if it hits a rubber or gets a tangled somehow, it'll just go over the top of the muzzle.
