America featured prominently on the soundtrack of my youth. I rank them as my 3rd favorite band, just behind ELO and Zeppelin. This was the studio version overdubbed, but I have seen them in concert, and they sound every bit as great live as they do in the studio! I was blown away!!! Next from America, you've gotta do, "Tin Man", of course. But after that, I recommend, "Daisy Jane". And don't sleep on their beautiful cover of, "Muskrat Love".

Isn't this a lovely song? I've remembered it for so long. I was a kid when it came out.
It's very possibly about a woman named Jan Smithers, who was a popular actress in the 70s. She and Gerry, this singer/songwriter, were an item around this time. She starred on the US TV show WKRP in Cincinnati. Such a great show and she was a total sweetheart. Her hair wasn't golden, though. Light brown. But maybe it turned gold on the summer! Mine does.
I love your observations about the bass player. I have to watch it again.
I taught myself this song on the guitar a long time ago -- pre internet -- and it was a blast to play.
Oh btw, i just heard an interview with the 2 remaining America members. Dewey, the guitar player, said that the opening rhythm and slide guitar were a direct homage to George Harrison's My Sweet Lord. And that they became friends later on. Isn't that adorable?

America is a rock band that was formed in London in 1970 by Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley. The trio met as sons of US Air Force personnel stationed in London, where they began performing live. That lead singer, Beckley, was a HUNK! He was so cute , I love his face in this old video, he was young and happy! Man he could sing and play, with that big perfect body and he had some golden hair himself. Blondes digging blondes. Wow. Back in the '70's these songs got a lot of air time. My older sister was a cute brunette with big brown eyes. When she would have her boyfriends come to get her they would call me "Sister Golden hair". I think a lot of us have times when we meant to go somewhere and we just couldn't make it there, because of how we just felt depressed. Very relatable and still an upbeat tempo. The look on the lead singer's face is so much fun to watch! This was a big hit for the group. Sister Golden Hair was their second single to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Thanks for the great reaction!!

Great Band, and especially their vocals. High quality stuff all the way. I first heard "America" back in 1972. I was 15, and the song was "Ventura Highway." That was only the beginning for this group. Just good basic music. They sound a little like "The Eagles", when they first started. Very similar sound.
