Boy was an interesting choice of word but thanks lol. I know it’s shocking for the internet but I am an adult XP I am just absorbing and emitting the good energy that Dev gives us through his channel
In my opinion, a “meh” set is exactly what we need. After things like the War planeswalkers and Eldraine, they’re starting to calm the power level back down, which I appreciate
My only problem with the set is that a lot of the wacky kooky buildarounds are landfall cards (Felidar retreat, the Greenwarden crucible card) and I am just so done with "landfall" strategies after a year of UG dominance. But, I like a lot of the themes and the Limited format is a blast so far. I LOVE the spell-lands in limited.
a 3/2 that does nothing except be free in magical christmas land? it's not that good, sorry, party is a limited mechanic, you won't be assembling a full party in any rank bracket that matters
I agree that this could be good, if the party mechanic continues in the dnd set and we get enough 1/2 cmc party members that are actually good themselves
Something I don't see people talking about with Nahiris lithomancy is anything with a crucible of worlds effect makes it into a weird red draw x spell with no downside. There's a crucible of worlds in this set xD
Yep, Greenwarden not only let's you replay sacced lands but pumps out twice as many landfall triggers. There are several at 1 to 3cmc that you wouldn't mind, 8 landfall triggers
Love what you’re doing with the new software, and I appreciate the flash and slide you threw in referencing Basri’s Lieutenant. The extra visual aid for an off the cuff reference to a card was a nice touch
Search World Shaper in your collection. It's a hidden card from the intro Arena-exclusive set that is very scary with landfall. It puts all the lands in the graveyard into play at once when it dies, which is absolutely devestating with Felidar Retreat, Scute Swarm and Nahiri's Lithoforming. My record is 18 landfalls in one turn.
Lithoforming is going to be a must-have in Gruul landfall decks. That one artifact that allows you to play lands from graveyard, the landfall creature with "for each land played in your precombat main phase there is an additional combat phase", and the reclaimrr.
Speaking of Waverly, Another sleeper is the song Waverly on Samia's debut album The Baby. It's highly narrative and thematic. Fits best at night/dinner shift. It's a a little movie all on its own : )
The "land on the otherside" thing reminds me of the paper WoW TCG. All cards effectively had this trait. But most "quests" got to be both resource and later on a one off card draw effect.
Nahiri's Lithoforming, Greenwarden, and valakut exploration can do 20 damage quickly. Red land that wheels and add in black for that 3 mode kicker black card with cobra and GB nissa. Just build a deck around valakut exploration, which imo is a top 5 card of the release. You're really playing that lithoforming as a 2 of max, and it's super good late game in a top deck war
Scute swarm makes me happy to have Goblin Chain Whirler in my deck. I have always been viscerally afraid of small-fast-many creatures IRL and this bug has me reaching for a flame thrower.
I think people are down on the set because it’s an obvious departure from the power creeping sets we’ve seen for the last 2 years. This is a good thing, not a bad thing. The set is obviously moderate leaning towards value rather than bombs. The set will be with us for the full 2 years and I don’t think it’ll have it’s full moment in the sun until next rotation. Hopefully by then, it’s contemporary sets will share the same type of design. In a way, this could make the whole set a sleeper. Looking forward to finding out! The limited environment look fun too.
That Orah card was literally the main reason for me wanting to make a cleric deck, I think it's something that could be very useful that can help you get a cleric back, and some life.
Also, that electromancer is definitely going into my party deck, looking at it before you explained ways you could use it I had thought, "hmmm, that card could be handy in that deck". But then after hearing what you had to say I was like " holy cow, this card is pretty fricken awesome!"
Party has a number of sweet payoffs that people seem to be ignoring because "ooh, if you have four creatures, aren't you already winning?" I think Acquisitions Expert is sneakily extremely powerful because, although your opponent has some control over what cards from their hand you can choose to discard, the Expert can hit lands. Lands! The number of black effects that can cause your opponents to get pinched on lands is vanishingly small and I think Acquisitions Expert can have lots of unexpected upside once you get even three party members down in the first few turns.
Oh I've been thinking a lot about how to build the party deck with electromancer in mind, particularly weighing the need for red things that I can cast off of electromancer to how much party stuff from other colors I can include.
Agreed about clerics. Alot of good clerics in standard and I think people are missing the boat. While rogues probably got most of their really good rogues for a bit, I could definitely see clerics get some huge bombs in Kaldheim and Harry Potter Plane.
The blue white party spell that gains 3 draws 3 is pretty neat. Maybe Jeskai Party is going to be the shell. Im working on a party deck but the cards arent all there in my collection to really feel it out properly. I blame wizards. Of course.
Im super surprised no one is talking about Shatterskull Charger. Its not a game changer, but its really good. 3 cmc for a 4/3 trample haste. Yea it goes back to your hand if you don't kick it, but if you do kick it you get a 5/4 instead. Also, it's typing is really relevant: Giant Warrior. Perfect for warrior aggro decks
I'm a little surprised you didn't pick up on the Scute Swarm Mutate possibilities since you were pretty high on Mutate (and Gemrazer has been a fine card). I don't know if it's *good*, but it's certainly interesting. I think one of the most important aspects of a card in the new standard is no double mana pips and a lot of the cards on this list qualify. The manabases we have are pretty good at supporting single mana of any color. I think I'd be comfortable going 5 color if there was a reason to do so. That said, any card that Jegantha wouldn't like is going to be a pain in the behind to make work with our flip duals.
Just found your videos man but thank you so much! You have a great personality to go along with the knowledge to have. I appreciate you and immediate subscriber
I think the reason Felidar Retreat isn't seeing much attention is because there's a ton of enchantment removal in the format, and it's a turn 4 do nothing. I guess if you get it out a turn early sure it's not bad, but it's not on the same level as Field of the Dead
Double masters allowed me to finally pickup stoneforge mystics, batterskulls, & stonehewer giants on the cheap. I will be running maul of the skycleaves with it. Dropping and equiping for 2 is nice. Im running squadron hawks for cheap beats. I threw in birth of meletis for utility. The 0/4 wall with the maul should be fun. I even put in masterwork of ingenuity. Because who doesn't like more skull mauling for 1 mana.
Kaza turn 2 into Goblin Wizardry on turn 4 would be awesome. Turn four drop either a seven drop instant/sorcery or two four/three drops triggering the prowess from the wizard tokens
I'm not in a position to give any advice, but I hope this might help: I was a subscriber before Prof gave a shout -out back in the day. The quality of the magic-contend hasn't dwindled over the years. Yet your channel didn't explode like you would have earned it to. I love your content and your personality, although I can't help to recognize some frustration. So my advice - instead of putting focus on the 'cat-petting-guy' the 'fantastic-music-making-guy' is much more interesting - to me at least. People were screaming where to get your music at times. I didn't hear a fresh piece for a long time, if I'm not wrong. Now I know a cool tune takes more than just a second to produce, but my - I'm waiting for it, and I'm sure you will take some fun too out of creating music again? Love
How do you think Felidar Retreat and Scute Swarm are sleepers? Both cards are nuts and go into an absolute atrocity of a Naya deck with Nahiri's Lithomancy and World Shaper. I actually crashed the client triggering 18 landfalls with 2 Felidar Retreats, a Scute Swarm, and an Ancient Greenwarden (lithomancy lets you sacrifice all your lands, and then World Shaper brings them back from the graveyard to play). I did the math, and the end result of that turn if I did +1/+1 with all the Felidar triggers would have been over 262,000 Scutes, each of which is a 37/37.
For resolute strike, doesn't the equipment need to be on the field? You can't just equip things from your hand for free...seems okay, kinda situational
also i think Spitfire Lagac is a sleeper, a target for sure. im just guessing no one remebers the ole Saproling decks from way back in our first run threw Ravnica. lol, i do.
First deck I want to run. Landfall creature tokens build around, 8 pieces to make it viable with retreat and scute. Ramp package, heroic intervention for protection, a few high end threats for when you're sitting on a mountain of Mana. Make angels white flip land auto include, probably a couple of Ugins, maybe splash blue for Uro.
Felidar retreat cost 4 mana feed the swarm cost 2, with that being said I see this as mainboard but for sure side boarded out when playing against any deck that has black in it as feed the swarm will most likely be in every deck that runs black.
The expeditions and mythics in this set are going to tank in price due to the over printing and availability. WOTC is really making a fortune by reprinting the older, valuable cards in newer sets. It costs Wizards next to nothing to reprint new expeditions that go for $25-$50 in the aftermarket. People are so blinded by the bling that they are willing to pay quadruple the amount for a product that costs Wizards less to produce than a normal booster box that normally sells for $90-$100. In hindsight, we as consumers are increasing the price of new products because we are willing to pay these outrageous prices for the same piece of cardboard with different ink and artwork.
Regarding party I was listening to a judge yesterday and from what I understood you really need to have 4 creatures with the needed types to have a party having 1 creature being Rogue Wizard and another Rogue Cleric or Tajuru Paragon for example won't cut it. That limits a lot the potential of party cards imo. From my experience in magic the times where you actually have any 4 non token creatures on board in any format other than limited are really rare let alone those specific types all together.
they don't need to be nontoken to form a party though, that's something at least. outlaws' merriment can turn out to be one of the best cards for party decks because of that.
I swear, stupid YT let me down not notifying me. But damn am I high on Felidar Retreat and Scute Swarm, the board can get so out of control so fast, seriously even late game in a Naya Landfall list with Retreat and Swarm on the board Lithoforming could set it way over the top, and all 3 are rock solid on their own.
Premium Fruits I never said “this set is so meta” but it’s undeniable that this is one of the strangest sets in a long time. Each new archetype kind of looks weak on it’s own, though there are so many through lines which cross archetypes that the potential for a broken deck is very high. I’m not a pro or anything and it’s just my opinion that we are going to see a lot of strange decks over the next year or so.
Oops, I’ve watched 10+ videos and forgot to sub. My B, great content- my newbie brain can’t consume it fast enough. Also is that you rapping in the intro. If so ✊🏿 🤜🏿👈🏻
4 teferi tutelage 4 maddening cacophony 4 opt 4 merfolk secret keeper 2 deliberate 2 into the story 2 shark typhoon 2 so tiny 3 into the roil 3 unsummon 2 negate 3 didn't say please 3 anti cognition 2 concerted defense Creatures 4 zulport duelist 3 sea gate storm caller 3 brazen borrower 3 charix the rising isle 2 master of wind Artifact 3 midnight clocc Arcane lands 4 silundi vision 2 jwari disruption 3 sea gate restoration 2 glasspool mimic Lands 2 castle vantress 14 island Companion Yorion *updated 85 cards* Only way to cram everything in balance the land ratio it comes up so remember that silundi vision can grab arcane lands when you dig which is where we increased our land count it digs 6 for an instant or sorcery but arcane lands are instant sorcery spells when searching w silundi vision and that's how we ensure we hit our later drops if needed but it only comes up later midnight clocc just resets everything and makes the mirror a nightmare being 85 cards makes the mill match even more of a nightmare for our opponent and all of our chunky creatures minus duelist are not in shoc or bolt range they will have to burn double removal juss to get damage thru for mono red
dude i think scrute swarm is going to be the best card of the set, mainly as if it copies itself it will copy as a mutate over creature with a terror or gives all haste....GG
I like how in this set when it comes to the party stuff you and I have the same opinions about the same cards lol my party edh deck is gonna be interesting
Is that how that works though? I'm talking about Embercleave being in your hand when you play the combat trick. I was under the assumption that the equipment has to be on the field.
You are right, the equipment has to be on the field, but I don't think he ever said something about equiping the embercleave from your hand, or did i miss something?
No dev, you don't get to skip the We Like Magic :P I wanna see the sparkles!!! XD seriously though looking forward to all the deck techs and whatnot, keep up the good work my man. I think people are ignoring the new Hedron Crab at their own peril.
Dev. I'm planning on being at Comics Plus in Macon tonight for prerelease. Or Prime time gaming if you decide to go there. Im planning on getting a collectors box that I would love to have you open on your channel. I also have a couple cards you could give away.
Saying no1 talked about Felidar Retreat is a swing and a miss if ive ever seen one. The world champ PVDDR made an article on SCG like 7 days ago, talking about how he thought this card would turn up very good!
There’s a reason people only really talk about rogues. Lorwyn and by the grace of wotc’s hand, thats the class that got the best legacy support of all party types so they’re always going to be discussed the most. Clerics have their fans because of Edgewaker and that’s it. At least it’s better than the wizard support.
I’m not sure if this works this way or not so I’ll need a more rules savvy person to look into it. But with Kaza’s ability reducing mana cost as opposed to creating mana does that make Sea Gate Stormcaller’s ability able to affect a 3+ CMC Instant or Sorcery spell that costs 2 or less when said spell is on the stack?
Looks like it doesn’t work the way I mention above. 117.9c. An alternative cost doesn't change a spell's mana cost, only what its controller has to pay to cast it. Spells and abilities that ask for that spell's mana cost still see the original value.
Yo Dev :) Love the Channel, and the content, if you already don't you might want to catch Merchant on CZcams and Twitch, many of the cards you picked today hes working on / with.. :)
I also don’t hear a lot of people talking about these cards. But I don’t actually have a lot of places where I can find people talk about magic cards in general xd. Where do you all get your magic talks?
So having 10 2/2 cats (or 20 1/1 insects) is fine, but 10 2/2 zombies isn't? At least before fotd starts to trigger you need 7 different lands on board. I might still be salty about the ban, but this doesn't make sense to me :/
I have stayed away from Scute Swarm on arena after last time with Ancient greeenwarden it went nuts tried to drop 500 plus tokens and crashed my session :-( - good card though
Sry had to comment again but Dev, Lithoforming is absolutely broken and will be the cornerstone of Gruul Landfall (and possibly Izzet/Grixis mill lol?) along with the green mythic that doubles triggers. You play this monstrosity with the new minotaur out and that's multiple additional combat phases.... Or just a lotus cobra and then it won't even matter that the lands are coming in tapped.
"[pause] ... Magic things." This channel has the best video intros on CZcams.
Yup.
You, sir, are WOEFULLY under subbed. Your insight, banter, & overall commentary are just unparalleled.
Dev I want you to know how awesome you are.
I don’t play standard and have no interest in playing it, but listening to you talk about standard (or any format for that matter) I’m interested in listening NF to what you have to say.
Your genuine love and passion for the game shines through ALL the way and it’s refreshing Brother I gotta say.
Theres even been times where your evaluation of a card in standard inspired an idea for that card in commander.
As you could probably imagine as a commander player, I’m VERY excited for this set and the power level is definitely there for our format. It feels like a healthy balance of power too not just stacked in a few cards and the rest is meh. At least imo.
Thanks for your deification to the content man it really gets through to people, you can just tell that from your fans.
Poofy Peanut02 you are a very nice boy
Boy was an interesting choice of word but thanks lol.
I know it’s shocking for the internet but I am an adult XP

I’ve been telling everyone that ardent electromancer is good, I’m so glad that you of all people agree with me, Dev!
Your opinion is precious no matter who confirms it ^^
a 3/2 that does nothing except be free in magical christmas land? it's not that good, sorry, party is a limited mechanic, you won't be assembling a full party in any rank bracket that matters
@@premiumfruits3528 This. Sorry, but party is a bad mechanic. I want to love party (DnD parties in Magic!

Nobody said it had to be free to be decent. Funny, I remember people saying Burning-Tree Emissary was going to be terrible, too
That cleric has legendary protection built in. You cast a second one and get double triggers when you say one!
Something I don't see people talking about with Nahiris lithomancy is anything with a crucible of worlds effect makes it into a weird red draw x spell with no downside. There's a crucible of worlds in this set xD

That Snapple plug! Great video as always Dev
Scute swarm could definitely see play in Lotus Cobra/Omnath decks. Pairs well with Genesis Ultimatum too.
Sublime Epiphany works reasonably well from the board and that Nahiri's Lithoforming card and this guy seem like a crazy neat way to close a game!
Search World Shaper in your collection. It's a hidden card from the intro Arena-exclusive set that is very scary with landfall. they don't need to be nontoken to form a party though, that's something at least. outlaws' merriment can turn out to be one of the best cards for party decks because of that.
Hahah Dev’s real-time self fact checking always knocks me over 8:57
Ok I’ll resume the video now
scute swarm on turn 4-5 combined with cultivate seems promising. With some ramp you also could get this earlier...
I'll try that in my radha deck.
the poneytail is looking better everytime I see you buddy!
I don't know how viable it is but I'm definitely adding retreat and scuttle into the same GW landfall deck.
This set is going to make standard so weird once it settles in.
this set isn't going to change standard at all until Uro rotates, and even then temur adventures will still be king
If so ✊🏿

Only way to cram everything in balance the land ratio it comes up so remember that silundi vision can grab arcane lands when you dig which is where we increased our land count it digs 6 for an instant or sorcery but arcane lands are instant sorcery spells when searching w silundi vision and that's how we ensure we hit our later drops if needed but it only comes up later midnight clocc just resets everything and makes the mirror a nightmare being 85 cards makes the mill match even more of a nightmare for our opponent and all of our chunky creatures minus duelist are not in shoc or bolt range they will have to burn double removal juss to get damage thru for mono red
Love your videos brother! You gained my Sub! Your passion for the game and great personality make for great videos. Keep em coming! 💪🏼💪🏼
I hope Ardent Electromancer will be a good surprise, but please not in mono red aggro. Robin Hood already gives Rogue. :/
dude i think scrute swarm is going to be the best card of the set, mainly as if it copies itself it will copy as a mutate
over creature with a terror or gives all haste....GG
nahiri's lithoforming would go great with crucible of worlds. what are the odds of another reprint in the next few sets?
I like how in this set when it comes to the party stuff you and I have the same opinions about the same cards lol my party edh deck is gonna be interesting
Is that how that works though? I'm talking about Embercleave being in your hand when you play the combat trick. I was under the assumption that the equipment has to be on the field.
You are right, the equipment has to be on the field, but I don't think he ever said something about equiping the embercleave from your hand, or did i miss something?
No dev, you don't get to skip the We Like Magic :P
I wanna see the sparkles!!!
Orah, Skyclave Hierophant + Arcane Adaptation ("cleric") + any [X] CMC creature. Cast creature for X=0, goes to graveyard. Lesser of 0 is still 0.
Yo Dev :) Love the Channel, and the content, if you already don't you might want to catch Merchant on CZcams and Twitch, many of the cards you picked today hes working on / with.. :)
Looking good Dev. Have always loved every bit of content you put out!
Congrats on your new Snapple sponsorship! Take the money and get more cats
I love the intros, Dev.
I really think that Myriad Construct is gonna be great, and you've convinced me on Electromancer, gonna try it :)
I think everyone needs 20 minutes of cat content every now and then.
Hey Dev, I heard your Pelakka Predation is going out with......SQUEAK!
Best last 2 seconds of a video ever. :)
I also don’t hear a lot of people talking about these cards. But I don’t actually have a lot of places where I can find people talk about magic cards in general xd. Where do you all get your magic talks?
Scute swarm with a mutated migratory greathorn is hilarious. It makes greathorns an not 1/1s
So having 10 2/2 cats (or 20 1/1 insects) is fine, but 10 2/2 zombies isn't? At least before fotd starts to trigger you need 7 different lands on board. I might still be salty about the ban, but this doesn't make sense to me :/
Nahiri's Lithoforming is made for Korvold Fae-cursed King.
It's too bad Cavalier of Flames is rotating.
Dev, you really need to take a look at the gruul landfall deck from Brian G. You will see it on the lather, at least in Bo1, it’s nuts!
i didn't even knew your last card existed
I have stayed away from Scute Swarm on arena after last time with Ancient greeenwarden it went nuts tried to drop 500 plus tokens and crashed my session :-( - good card though
Subbed since 6 years man!
Can't think of Scute Swarm without thinking of Scrote Squad from The League....
Ardent electromancer becomes even crazier if you can flicker it.
resolute strike in zurgo edh seems great
10:00 Not in control decks because it draws only one card, but with Moraug it's game.
Dev you're the freaking best. Love you
