The grand observatories across earth were built to predict the return of "The Serpent" ie, the Comet of the Younger-Dryas that periodically rained down bolides that skipped through the atmosphere burning up and causing blasts in orders of magnitude of nuclear weapons. The Observers at Gobeckli Tepi marked out column 43 describing one of the cataclysms, they knew the Serpent comet was coming back, the intervals of calamity were shorter. They buried their observatory, hoping to come back, dig it up and continue their sentinel duty.
The Snake Comet came; this time all it's remaining material exploded while people hidden in caves such as Durinkuyu and the 35 plus other underground cities might have survived, as did some furtunate humans elsewhere on parts of earth.
Wherever people migrated from that fertile crescent, they built observatories and some built shrines to The Serpent (such as the Serpent mound in the Americas). Some added the Serpent to their Gods ( such as Quatzecoatl and the Thunder Bird) all across the world.
The Younger-Dryas events had a profound impact on much of humanity. It is just recently that archeology is revealing what occurred.
I have deduced this information from my interests in geology, anthropology, history, religious readings, and geography. I have never read or heard anyone explain all these events like I have just laid out. If someone has presented this theses, my apologies for my claim. My hope is that the next time a comet can destroy parts of the earth, humans can destroy it. Remember, we have observatories ourselves, just like the ancients!

The caves are so massive and intricate that one would naturally surmise that burials were made underground also. Were any remains ever found? If so, that would tell a great deal about who and why these people were there and worked so industriously to create their "city".

I see (read) horror, fear in walls. In stone. It is recorded there. People lived there for a long time. And they lived there because they feared for their lives. They didnt want to die. Something very fearful forced them to live their. I cannot sence joy or something positive. Only strong fear and hopelessness. Very strong negative energy everywhere. I cannot imagine what could trigger such strong emotions. Obviously it must have been some form of natural disaster of epic proportions.

Great footage. The hypothesis of the lower tunnels and chambers being more recent makes sense if the style of construction changes. Perhaps there is physical evidence where the change occurs? So, there are multiple separate "underground cities"; is there a way to determine if there is a single, oldest site? Or perhaps a cluster of several? Turkey has other ancient rock-cut sites like the Phrygian Valley that look remarkably similar, as well.
Yep and if there is a change in style then it's a dead give-away that there were different stages of construction, perhaps by an entirely different group of people.

I read an article on this place and it said that it had churches places for livestock and even air vents that barely small enough for animals to get in to keep fresh air coming in it also had big grate like stones for water to flow underneath in the even of a flood, also had an underground well for constant fresh water that could only be reached from inside

What are the stone wheel-doors made from and were they carved underground or above ground (not too big to pass through the tunnels?). It seems despite the nearly 200 underground cities, there has not been a single shard of pottery or stone implement discovered there. Did they find ancient garbage pits or middens where broken artifacts may be found?
Artifacts were found, mostly Hittite. But they didn't live here permanently. Whole lives were not spent here. There isn't accumulated detritus.
I would assume that any cools stuff would have been found by the next civilization, time after time. I also assume that with in the last few hundred years, everything cool would have been looted or "discovered and preserved" by the Smithsonian in a secret location never to be hear of again......

Really an enigmatic place and people. There's something sad about a people who went through such labors to build and then dwell underground like this. How smoky was it down there or did they move around a lot in complete darkness. How much soot and burn marks cover the ceilings/walls? Where did they go when nature called and those giant disks sealed the passage.
My impression is that there aren't a lot of artifacts that came out of the Subterranean Cities. If they were discovered relatively empty, that adds another element to their mystery.

Ancient Persians/Iranians were the masters of ancient Canals. Look at their 100s of km Qanats, as a form of precise canals, to guide water into more dry areas to create their Gardens.

this could have been built for some another alien race that is atmospheric conditions that are harmful to them on surface. They technically can regulate air from outside to inside and also regulate sun light and heat or radiation coming from the sun or maybe the frequency coming from the dome. Did you ever think about castles having underground DUNGeons for prisoners and this ancient city could have been prisons that the prisoners helped dig?
