    A neat little box for keeping your chisels close to hand at the bench.

    Love your videos. Very simple and elegant, with no annoying music or long introductions, etc. Very high quality video and sound.
    Good job!

    The bottom of the boxes fit into a routed groove, if they are solid wood (which mine are) then this is just glued at the middle of the two ends allowing the wood to move. If you use ply or similar then this can be glued all the way round. I hope this helps. All the best, David.

    Love his videos. I wish David was still 'Making it Easy' for us novices. Thanks for all that you have done!

    Hi, thanks for your comment, it's easier to achieve than it may look. If you shoot the ends of each side to a tight fit and then make sure the tray is glued up square (to match the box) the result will require the minimum of fitting for a piston fit. All the best, David.

    Doing the same thing. No lid tho! I make violins, and wanti to be able to ‘clip’ the tray hanging over the back at my pony as it suits. I use these trays to keep the tops I’m using atm in to hand

    4Carl-Just another approach. I insert all of my chisels handle first into the slots in the roll, thus can see the working end and know which to grab - all of my roils are double sided, which makes folding them in half and laying them over either the lid of my chest or a panel that is fitted to hang on the end of the box. Obviously not all of the chisels are out at the same time, only those that are use appropriate. Nice discussion.

    Is nobody going to comment on how perfectly the tray fit in the box...

    Thank you for sharing this. Making boxes is my speciality based on the local demand, I will try some new designs inspired by your video.

    Great videos. Currently using clear lidded stacking plastic tubs. I made leather pouches also. Your boxes inspire me to attempt creating a few. Thank You

    Yes, that is very helpful. Unfortunately, the Furniture & Cabinet Making magazine no longer lists your article for this tool box at their website, but I've seen the plans for your jewelry box, they still have, and I noticed the routed groove you mention. I need to study up on how to cut a precise router groove with hand tools. Maybe some sort of router plane.

    Lovely - May I ask, how do you handle hiding the dado for the top/bottom when laying out and cutting the dovetails
    Thank you

    Your boxes are beautiful. Having been inspired by you to start making boxes, and having watched all the You Tube videos concerned with boxes, I have a design question. There's no mention of the bottoms of boxes in any of the videos I've watched.. What kind of joint did you use to attach the bottoms of those boxed in this video? I realize that this ia a newbie type of question, but I have a little experience, long ago, in working in a woodshop, but it was making windows, not boxes.

  • @bilum

    If you laid your chisels alternating head to toe you could make the box even smaller :)

    • @243WW
      @243WW Před 9 lety +2

      Laying the chisels head to toe is a recipe for cutting your wrist and slows down work! Good for stabbing your fingers as well.

      243WW if the insert is designed properly and you're not being a total idiot there is no way you could do either.

    • @243WW
      @243WW Před 9 lety +2

      Yes you are right, what was I thinking, I'm such an idiot at times. Good idea. I'll try to think harder when I'm working in the future with sharp things.

    Hi David.
    I don't suppose I could be a pain and ask how you fitted the bottoms in those boxes? I'm trying to make some with hand tools only and I'm having trouble with the base - I'm not sure how to go about the stopped dados. I'm assuming you used a router table?

    • @MrMeanderthal
      @MrMeanderthal Před 8 lety +1

      you can use a router with a block of wood as a fence.. if it's a plunge router it can be quite thin, say 1/2" if it is not a plunge router then you make the fence twice as thick or more as the material you cutting groove in so it registers against the edge while you pivot it down into full depth of cut.... a router table is the same action except you pivot the wood down onto router bit and with just a router you pivot the router down onto the wood..
