    I remember loving to write in school until a specific English teacher decided "nah, I don't like your writing" and would nitpick everything. Once she had me stay after school just so she could lecture me that "foregone" wasn't a word, and that "people don't talk like this".
    It was a poem. Of course nobody talks like that. It's poetry.

    • @thedarklrd6714
      @thedarklrd6714 Před rokem +112

      Also, foregone is a word. A very old word, but a word nonetheless. A quick google search would tell you that, an English teacher of all people should know that. It's no wonder so many kids are failing their classes if even the teachers don't know how to do their jobs.

    • @IceDragon978
      @IceDragon978 Před rokem +87

      Your English teacher was a failure of an English teacher. Foregone isn't even that abandoned of a word to say it's not real. People still say "foregone conclusion", meaning an outcome that's not going to be changed. For instance, your English teacher's failure as an English teacher is a foregone conclusion.
      Also, people don't talk like most styles of writing, even if it's not poetry. Everything is exaggerated in some way that isn't natural in actual speech. They're characters, not people.

      Not only is "foregone" a word that's still in common usage, the present tense/participle ("forgo"/"forgoing") are also sometimes used as a synonym for "abstain/abstaining from".
      Although I suspect from the "people don't talk like that" comment that this specific teacher may have had some difficulty in correctly defining terms such as "tense", "participle" and "synonym". Technical failures aside... it was schoolkid poetry. If you're an English teacher and you respond to even the most execrable schoolkid poetry with anything other than encouragement and positive suggestions/constructive criticism, you're incredibly shit at your job.

They were basically a bunch of weak-a** skeleton death-eaters who would just run around chasing the main character. Meanwhile back at the ranch the main character literally just cried uncontrollably and screamed “NOOOOOO!” every two pages because I thought that would make ppl empathize with him. The overly detailed in medias res opening passage, the bumpy transition into an exposition dump filled with every plot idea you have in your head simultaneously, the sudden shift from overly dramatic action to the "regular life of a teenager"-backstory, the overuse of proper nouns (that are not too complicated because then you'd have to invest work into reasearching and/or coming up with actually interesting words), and the implication of the protagonist being a loner (because that's relatable and also it means you don't have to write too many plot relevant characters... not like you woukd keep writing after the introduction anyway), it all comes together to form the ultimate amalgamation of everything 16yo me has ever written

Then I wrote a short story of 6k words this spring, which I really liked actually and it's the first time I've shown some of my writing to other people. There are way too many of those. Young Adult and Pre-teen novels are kind of bloated and don't give people at that age justice in what they can grasp about life.
      So a lot of it is just publishers pushing hard-fan fics (usually people that already have a following on some internet forums).
      But when you look at good Young Adult fiction, it's usually novels that deal with hard topics from a teenager's mind: S.E. Hinton's 'The Outsiders' and Eiie Wiesel's 'Night' Come to mind. Even older novels like "Old Yeller" or the French classic "The Little Prince" deals with hard themes that some kids already experience in their personal lives but don't have the words to express it yet.
