Using an Infrared filter for Landscape Photography - Zomei 720nm Infrared Filter

  • Join me as I visit Kilnsea beach and the surrounding areas as I use my infrared filter to take some midday landscape photos. Using my Canon 5Dmk3 and the Zomei 720nm filter I did manage to get one photo that I was pleased with but, honestly, I found this a bit tedious but for a one off the IR photography made a nice change.

    That last photo had a great composition with the bench drawing the eye all the way to that slight blue hue over the water. Made me wistful for the ocean.
    Thanks for sharing this, it's actually a novel type of photo for me at least.

    Great vlog Chris will have to watch it a few times to fully understand it. Keep up the good work Chris 📸👍😃

    Look out for contrasting light and dark for infrared photography - ponds with overhanging trees etc..

      Thanks for that. I was a little unsure what to go for - not much experience with it. Now you’ve said that I have a spot in mind. Again, thank you 🤘🏻

    I just bought one of those filters and was highly unimpressed with the red-cast images. I tried inverting and desaturating them, but got better results doing that to a straight colour image. I now see I didn't change the in-camera white balance. Off out to have another go now that I have that info. 🤣 👍

    Really nice, I started using a hoodman loop for focusing it helps tons

      A friend of mine uses one of them for astrophotography and they’re really handy. Not something I have myself. Would probably make this a bit easier.

      @@ChrisBaitson yes it would you could even get a small loop which only cost a few dollars, I use them for Astro and IR it is almost impossible to achieve critical focus with out them on a dslr. Just went yesterday with my 590nm d800 for sunset and full moon, I have been shooting with it lately for the first time in years it is so much
      Fun I can’t stand it.

    I really loved the last image with the lone bench. Excellent IR photography, and you are only using a filter attachment. Very nice.

    I’m grateful I’m watching this again. I’m sitting here at antsy waiting for the delivery of my third IR filter. I broke the other two but I’m sitting here not doing anything. Meanwhile I had to duck tape and third like to my tripod and I’m at the part in the video, we were talking about it being no big deal for you to put your camera and tripod and it totally just reminded me, so thank you sir that would’ve sucked have to reason why I broke my camera and the filter last time was because I didn’t have the tripod ready.

    IR photography is great if you have a converted full spectrum camera.

      Agree with you there. But for a bit of fun the filter works “alright”.

      Idk I can only imagine how much better it is but I have an absolute blast doing it with just a filter screw on

  • @charlesdiastirodepressao

    Very nice video. I'm a newbie in IR photography but I'm in love with it. I have a full spectron camera and like too much to play with my standart DSLR with the IR filter just like you did in this video. I just unable to get the blue sky like you did I'm afraid.

    • @ChrisBaitson
      @ChrisBaitson  Před rokem

      The blue skies were just a channel swap in Photoshop. There’s plenty of tutorials on here on how to do it mind you. I just swapped channels to make the sky blue and then masked it away over everything else.

      @@ChrisBaitson I use 850 and 1000nm and also can't get the blue back no matter how much channel swapping. I even made a specific IR profile for ACR using profile maker. I wonder that's because they nm are too high? Interested in your perspective.

    • @ChrisBaitson
      @ChrisBaitson  Před rokem +2

      For info I was using a 720NM and it gives off a very light yellow tint to the skies out of camera. I wonder if yours are blocking ALL visible light? 720Nm let’s just a little through.

      @@ChrisBaitsondef the 720 and his won’t produce any faux or reg color .. now the million dollar question I have is do they sell bellow 720 for a non convert cam? I’m totally consumed by it I went a month without my camera. I broke it and I was so desperate to get back into the infrared. I actually talked taped, a piece of broken infrared glass onto my iPhone SE, which has a singular lens to give me an idea how old this iPhone is and was taking photos with that. I’m completely obsessed and consumed by it. It’s such a perfect offset to my bird photography and it’s amazing what the varying filters will do. I have so far on owned a Hoya and a Company that sells and cheap. I forget the name but honestly I was so much happier with the coloring of the foliage with the other one it had that really nice distinct blue to it lawyers already, but I have been waiting obsessively the last 24 hours as my breakthrough I Orleans. Infrared lens was a day behind my Camera delivery. I was being such a baby about it yesterday I am a city and go out and shoot my camera for the first time, but I gave myself a little peptalk. Remind myself how pathetic that would be the wait a whole month to go practically crazy and lose all your mental health and then you get the camera back. I did not even go out out of respect for the camera and yourself. You should do that so I did but I’m now itching for this Ireland to get here because it’s a pretty good day in New Jersey for it and I’m in Cape May and I can’t tell you the target Richard Bierman down here is almost by blowing with respect to certain composition call O you never know they are IR photography

    Have you removed UV IR Filter from your DSLR Sensor or is your camera an Astronomical model?

    • @ChrisBaitson
      @ChrisBaitson  Před rokem

      No the camera still has the IR filter over the sensor. It’s using an IR filter on the lens. Hence the long exposures to allow as much IR light through as possible.
