  • How to Catch Stocked Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout in a City Pond Ice Fishing with a Jaw Jacker or Jigging.
    Welcome back to a Pond that was featured in several other videos through the years on my channel. This is the HERITAGE CLASSIC! OUT ON HERMITAGE POND!
    If you want to check out some of the old Hermitage park original footage from the early days of the Fishing Doctors adventures and maybe even pre-fishing doc time check out the links below.

    Yesterday, I went out to Hermitage Park Pond and it is still very alive!!! This is a fishery I hate to see die off every year. An underutilized, close to home great little fishery in the city of Edmonton.
    I recommend getting out there and giving it a try if you have a spare morning or evening and don't want to drive far.
    I used to fish this pond before I had wheels. Bike to it in the open water. Take the bus after University class as soon as it froze in winter. I was even kicked off by the police once. They asked what I was doing... I responded, "ice fishing". Now my response would probably be a little more sarcastic and he'd have to drag me off, haha.
    I got out there around 10am and caught two bows pretty quick. Around noon got two browns as well. They seemed pretty aggressive when they came around. There might not be many in there at this point in the game, but they're all decent size and not too hard to catch!
    I caught two on the Jigging Jaw Jacker and one stationary Jaw Jacker. Both tipped with @circle_tackle 7mm tungsten jigs in white and chartreuse. Tipped with night crawlers or meal worms.
    The Rod I was Using and Tungsten Jigs can be found @ www.circletackle.com.
    ROD - Full Circle Series PANFISH 36.
    7 mm Tungsten Jigs.
    The fish ranged in the 14 to 16 inch class. Depending on the size of the stocked fish I have caught fish up to 18 inches in there. Impressive growth in one season.
    Check it out, best of luck!

    Those are some great looking fish, such a shame they don't make it through the winter! That lake would have 10lbers in a few years!

    • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
      @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Yes, I've always thought it would be awesome if they could put one aerator on the lake and keep it alive. I'm sure their would be 3 pound fish by the second year and some 6 pounders by the third. I guess it would be a safety hazard, but would be nice to see in the city.

    Cant wait for this episode. I spent my entire childhood riding my bike over to Hermitage Park with my fishing rod. I still go back at least once a year with my kids. Great little spot. But... I didnt know they stocked it with anything other than Rainbows.

    • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
      @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures  Před 7 měsíci +1

      You can watch it now! Yeah that is the same as me. I used to ride my bike down to the pond with rod in hand all the way from our house up by Londonderry Mall. Was a fast ride down hill there and lots of uphill back in the evening. I would fish the river and pond in the summer that way. In the winter I'd stop there on the bus after University even. Now they stock with BROWN TROUT an RAINBOW TROUT. It is nice how the province is stocking with more variety these days.

      Was back... and outta town back home. Been steelhead fishing last couple days already. Hope more ice fishing in my future. I'm hoping temps drop and we get some local lower mainland ice for a few days. As for the Browns I am not certain of the unit cost for fish development at the hatchery. You very well could be correct. It's cool to have different fish to catch though.

    2 rods allowed in AB? BC need do that for ice fishing

    • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
      @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes, it used to even be 3 lines through the ice when I was a kid. Probably changed when I was around 12 years old. But yes 100% agree we need to petition BC to change the regulations to allow 2 lines through the ice per angler to match the 2 rods in a boat when fishing alone.

    Sweet video! I'm from BC and taking the grandpa out for an ice fish in Edmonton tomorrow. Seeing lots about this winter kill at Hermitage, do you think there still may be fish there given the mild winter?

    • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
      @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures  Před 4 měsíci +1

      They are long since dead most likely.
      I have never caught fish in there after the first half of January unfortunately. You'd probably be wasting your time.

    • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
      @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures  Před 4 měsíci +1

      You could try the Fort Saskatchewan Pond at the Lions Club down by the River. It has perch and trout in it and the fish over winter. The fish unfortunately don't grow as fast with the perch in there now.

      @@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures haha thank you so much for the quick response!! That's super helpful and saves us a full day- are most lakes in the area also impacted by winterkill? I was also considering Spring lake, Wabamun, Morinville, Cardiff, Pigeon- any thoughts on those spots?

    • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
      @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures  Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@thomaslawson177 Spring Lake is a better one as it does not usually winter kill. Also has some big trout in there. I think perch as well. Wabamun is good for walleye, there are whitefish and pike in there as well. Mornville reservoir has trout that are likely still alive, I have caught hold overs in there before. Cardiff apparently has big trout but they are hard to catch and find. I tried and only caught little trout. Pigeon is good for walleye but you have to know where to go. Spots are usually easily identified by people or truck tracks to the spots from the access points.

      @@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures Awesome, my grandpa and I really appreciate the info! I've never dropped a line here in AB so completely unfamiliar with these spots, hoping we can have some tight lines tomorrow. Will let ya know how it goes! Ideally perch or trout is the goal because that's what we're most familiar with. Sounds like fort lions/ Morinville will be our plan. Thanks again for your insight, sincerely appreciated!

    Great video, looked like a fun day. Those are healthy fish and I'm sure taste fine. I have a question about the scud; with the hook point down, do fish get hooked well? In the bottom jaw?

    • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
      @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thanks, yeah they taste fine. This pond they do have the black spot under the skin. I take my time and trim them off. Not really necessary but would rather not eat those specs. As for the scud that was an experiment. I have never actually tied a hook with the eye down but wanted to see if it would work. I haven't had enough time to see. Need more trout hits first.

      @fred98321 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures I'm interested to know how a hook oriented that way would work when jigging vertically; I know they are fine when fly casting. My brother catches trout with spots and eats them and hasn't suffered yet. I agree with you I'd rather not eat the specs.

      Any idea about Cardiff Pond? I went there last Sunday and it felt like I was fishing in a toilet bowl. There were a few other groups and nobody was catching anything. I know the lake is pretty deep and has a reputation for not getting winterkill, but idk.

    • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
      @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures  Před 6 měsíci

      @cornertankcorner yeah I think there are trout in Cardiff but there are apparently lots of carp as well. I actually fished Cardiff at the end of December and caught a bunch of small rainbow trout and a few brown trout. So there are fish in there.

    Ha! This video cleared some things up for me; I biked around this place in the summer and saw a lot of shore fishermen fishing it.. but the water looked brutal and I figured there would be next to nothing surviving in it, but was happy to see people out enjoying the day wetting a line- well it looks like the joke was on me 😅. Decent size fish in there, great they can stock it right in town here for people to enjoy.

    • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
      @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes, it has always had great first ice fishing up till the beginning of January. Usually in the fall after the water clears up fishing improves again from shore. If you go there in the evenings and stand up on the hill you can even see them cruising the shorelines in at dusk. Great little pond. I actually think when I fished it there were not that many left. Probably a lot of the fish are being caught in the spring, fall and first ice. Which is great. Especially if you saw lots of people fishing.
