- How to Catch WHITEFISH at SYLVAN LAKE ALBERTA Ice Fishing Using Wire Worm and Rattle Spoon.
I don't fish for Whitefish often, so I usually depend on some tips from other online acquaintances when it comes to these critters.
Last year Mike Binns Pointed me to Sylvan lake. JAN 2023 my father in law and I tried without luck. We saw a few swim by without catching any.
Fast forward almost 365 days to December 2023 and it was a whole different story. I parked the vehicle on the ice and walked out to the spot. Started drilling holes and I was in 14 feet of water... so I drilled toward shore to get into 8 feet of water.
I was marking perch and whites in 9 to 10 feet. So I set up the tent. Saw a few whitefish pass without interest. Caught a 9 inch perch and lots of little ones.
The morning produced no whitefish for me. Fortunately, the afternoon brought on a fantastic bite.
I finally started catching fish on a yellow wire worm above a Northland Tackle Rattl'n Flyer Spoon.
I actually hooked 2 on the wire worm and another 7 on the spoon. They like movement, and small jiggles seemed to do the trick.
Keeping the rig a couple feet off the bottom to half way up the column worked well.
The limit is 5 and they are very nice quality whites. We smoked some and made stuffed jellied fish with the rest. The fish was excellent!
Remember to bleed your fish by cutting the gills for best quality.

nice, i was glad you got out , definitely going to be able to drive on it now.
i like wire worms for perch.
usually have luck with them.
Yup should be some very thick ice now! Good luck out there. Wonder how long it will take for those perch to grow up.
Good too see you out fishing bro🎉
Did you see me out there?
Looks like you had a pretty good day. I live about 35 minutes away from Sylvan, Those whites can be a little finicky some times. My old body has a hard time walking out too far these days. Cold spell coming this week. I'll be able to drive out next week. Great show man. I'm always waiting for the little bell to notify of your next adventure.
Thanks for watching! Yeah it's a great lake with plenty of fish it seems. Sometimes they cooperate nicely. Nice to have 35 minutes away for you. I hope your Bell keeps going off because I hope to keep adventures coming and editing more videos.
Great day! Loads of whitefish!
Yup pretty good, can't complain with that at action at all. Sure beats a day of watching them swim by like they can't even see your lure.
Whitefish Slayer! The species I suck the most at catching the Lake Whitefish lol
Haha... me too man. I'm not a whitefish fisherman and when I catch them it feels like I was just lucky.
Rocky Mountain Whitefish much easier to catch lol
@@RikklesFisher really... not for me. Their mouth is too tiny
@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures the same rig you used on this pond basically, two nymphs above a tungsten with a mealworm on the tungsten at spray lakes in 15-20fow gets em everytime!
@@RikklesFisher Ok I'll put that away for a rainy day when I'm back out on Spray Lakes. That area is so amazing to fish. Stunning scenery!
Sylvan always seems to have a strong whitefish population even with all the fishing pressure. Find anything of interest in the stomachs doc?
Yes 100 percent I did! The big one was FULL of huge cased caddis larva, the biggest I have ever seen. Amazing! I'll put a photo in the community area on my channel so you can see.
Very much enjoyed the video! Was that a meal worm that you had tipped your spoon with?
Yes, you got it. that was a meal worm. Just broken in half and threaded on the hook.
Thank you sir! :)@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
Any Time!@@ericw2090
I thought it will tell you payne lake is really good fishing right now the trout they really like a fly with a shrimp on it
Never heard of it before. I looked it up, is that way down south by Cardston in Alberta? I never go south though so unlikely to ever get there. Enjoy the trout there!
Yeah, it’s the one by Cardston it’s pretty fun to catch trout up there. I know you’re a lot to keep five each per person which is pretty good.
@@keatonrussell3542 That's nice. Great to have stocked trout fisheries close to you.
man, I've never caught a white on a spoon. The few i've had look at them would spook just from the line untwisting it lol
Oh too bad... I have caught most of the whites I ever catch on a spoon. I'm a spoon fanatic though. I catch everything on them.
I always found spoons ,castmasters, gold Len Tompsons and wetaskiwins worked better in deeper water .
I haven't fished for them enough to know the difference. I have caught them on spoons in 4 feet of water though. So they will hit them in shallow too.@@markhughes7273
What setup did you have on your jawjacker? It looked like it was auto jigging, I am intrigued
I just use little tungsten jigs or wire worms. This is with the Jigging Jaw Jacker Base attachement. You can add one to any standard Jaw Jacker. There are three different jigging style wheels.
@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures thank you for your reply. Was a good video, I have fished Sylvan many times and have never seen a fish haha
Must be in the wrong spots lol
If willing, would you share if you were north or south of the lake?
@@audballer North Side of the lake. Ive been there only twice. Seen fish both times, but only caught this time.
@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures looking at the jacker base. Is it worth that price in yoir opinion?
@@audballer "worth" is a relative personal experience. I am not able to estimate the value you will experience from a product because everyone's personal experience is so variable. I'm happy with them. I have lots of videos using them if you want to see more in action catching fish.

I've never caught one of those. Don't think we have them up here.
Rr23?
I think so!
