Location! I 100% do the same thing and scout locations virtually w/ Google street view. Was shooting near Yellowstone a few days ago and every where we pointed the cameras looked amazing!
My recent project nothing huge but I used 4 cameras filming but my final video only used 2. I tried matching my settings as best I could but the profiles were different. The shift in color and quality really took away from the video for me. So make sure to use the same camera(s) or know which settings match between them. Would love any experience or advice you have on this in a video.
Motivated camera movements adds so much cinematic quality. Not just moving the camera for the sake of it but as creators we should ask ourselves WHY we are moving the camera and how it will impact the viewer.

I personally feel like everyone is putting way too much emphasis on 'how to get cinematic B-Roll', the top 25 creative gimbal moves, the king lof lenses for bokehlicous cinematic broll and so on. rarely do I ever see those people talk about story, how to convey a message, how to make a film that has impact. They just say bs like "Sure, story is also important" but never do they go into detail on HOW to do it
Depends on what they mean by "cinematic". You can take a random street, a random person walking down that street and with the right technical tools make this small thing look like it's straight out of a movie, without any added context. I feel like people that only look to achieve the "cinematic look" are not the ones that will use it to do short films or long length ones, they most probably want to film stuff for their youtube or instagram stuff like that, where you don't need actual story just a shot that looks good.

I tried forever to get talent. Everybody flaked. I ended up acting myself with my brother. My wife shot and directed. We didn't know anything about acting. We practiced lines over and over and did several takes. It's not perfect, but better than nothing which after two years of trying to get talent was where we stood. I think we broke a lot of these tips because of budget constraints and we got tired of waiting on other people... We put pallets together for the set and shot in the yard, we used stock music... we did use video lighting and soft boxes. I think it came out good for a very first short film... "Aces Wild" western short film here on YT. I'd love some feedback, keeping in mind this was our first ever short.

I think the line here is "the convenient choice" , I feel like this really hits home for me, so many times I find myself not using tool that are bad, but not great either, just convenient. The is the good quote that says something like, "good is the enemy of great" , I feel you could replace good with convenient.
Fashion is changing. I've noticed over the past half a year that an increasing number of tv shows and dokus are filmed with very little artificial light. It might be mainly an English / Scandinavian trend, but it is obviously catching on outside the nordic crime noir genre. I guess it is also because colors now are decent on high ISO settings in the top range of cameras, but the usual 3 point + the odd keylight, is going out of style. That is good news to amateurs, as carrying 3 reflectors and not 3 lamps is much cheaper.
So glad i found your channel. I love hearing about creating films from someone that makes really great films and can back up their advice with samples that they've shot. Thanks alot!

Good video. But Epidemic is way too expensive for normal starting fimmnakers unless you buy their crappy licence. They must be spending all their money on ads. Check out somone more realistic like artist or soundstripe.

Are you a lifestyle vlogger and you figure you need to copy Casey Neistat? Do you figure you need the most expensive camera and a drone to be successful? Obvious, Mark, this is your biz and it looks like you know your shit, but watch longbeachgriffy to understand the power of an idea and, in his case, charismatic acting. His stuff looks like crap but it fits his channel. I know vloggers who have burned out trying to make their stuff look stunning. Unless it's your biz it's a waste of time on CZcams. I do have a sketch I want to give the full treatment to but that will wait. Nice commercial work. Good luck.
Oh man! Location scouting is one thing I would have never thought of so deeply. I always think my environ is adequate and why should I search for something extra which does not represent me. But, now that I think about it, why should I restrict what represents me as well as my potential viewers. Thank you, MB
The most cinematic thing you can do is to have context to your work. You can't just slap a footage together just because it looks nice and expect it to be cinematic. You need to be able to tell a story throughout the video.

What's the focus extension shown on the thumbnail? I think I need it because the focus ring on my camera is not the smoothest, and if I try to focus while using my tripod, I shake the whole thing!
Both are great! The main difference is the sensor size. I wanted full frame for CZcams work and to match Slog2 with my Sony Fs7, but these things might not matter to you! That's why I bought an A7III

Tried to make a follow focus out of the parts from a shoulder rig for my M50, and it's a heavy sob, at least as far as the integrity of the M50 goes. So o guess some models might need a cage for something like this
Thank you! I'm getting so tired of people saying you should shoot at f1.4 to get cinematic footage! How many times do you actually shots in films that were shot wide open like that? I'm currently editing this mini-doc / advertisement with an Olympic gymnast, and two of the things that I really tried to implement were subframing and shooting relatively wide angle, around 24mm, to get as much context of the environment in there while still having clear subject matter. I also love cutting between shots where the subjects line up almost perfectly, there's something innately satisfying about controlling the movement of your viewer's eyes!

Nice tips but shooting at the drive way can be cinematic. Have seen it in movies. Sliders, cranes, depth of field, light, anamorphic, color grading, will give you cinematic look of your driveway.

4) A macro shot of whatever insects crawling around in the grass around the trees, for the added artfilm feel.

Wide angle is so powerful for story. Look at all of Terrence Malick's films, he loves the wide shots with deep dof.
