Amazing stories and excellent interview! I had no idea he was Puerto Rican! My grandfather is also from a small town in PR before he joined the USAAF and I’ll be happy to share this story with him. Thanks for the great content Keston and for the lovely stories to the Schomberg family
Awesome interview with Xela's granddaughters! Only family members can truly "paint the real picture" of their famous loved one! I loved hearing their touching behind the scenes responses 😄
Agreed. I think about that old adage: Never meet your heroes. In this case, it doesn't hold. Alex Schomburg legitimately sounds like a good guy and great grandparent!
I have always loved his artwork. I did not know he was Puerto Rican. Being Puerto Rican myself I am full of pride to know this amazing artist was also. His granddaughters are so sweet and you can see the love and pride they have for their amazing grandfather. He was the top tier artist of the Golden Age and his work will be appreciated forever.
This is what comic fans really enjoy. Learning and appreciating everyone involved. Best content in the space Keston. Thank you VERY much for doing this.
Thanks for being part of it, Ben. I told a buddy of mine about your on-the-spot question re Subby 20 and Diana. Referring to you, I was like "that's a dude who is on top of his Schomburg game!" Hoping to have the prank video out early next week.
Appreciate it Nowherebound. Yeah, I'd read quite a bit about Alex...but learned a ton that I didn't know from his granddaughters. Got to know him more as a human being.
Such a great video! It was really nice hearing about the man behind the art and the beautiful memories his family has. Hearing about his long marriage and his wife really struck close to home.
HazelDan! Hey ya'll. Yeah, I got teary-eyed a couple times when putting the video together. To get all those photos from Susan and Alicia was an honor...and to see how his awesome life evolved was incredibly touching.
This is spectacular. I was so blessed to hear this. It made me think about my relationship with my grandparents. Love and miss them. This was really special and I hope this puts to rest how to pronounce their family name. A lot of guys out there try to be fancy with it and say stuff like Shome (rhyme with home). This should put it to rest.
Alex! Great to hear from you, brother, and glad you could be part of this story. Definitely touching to hear Susan and Alicia talk about their grandpa. I came into the interview respecting him as an artist and came out respecting him as human being. BTW: Good point about the name!
Awesome video Keston & Alex’s Granddaughters !! 🎉 I love Alex Schomburg art and his work! Ive talked to Susan on some occasions very sweet. I actually have the very first work ever of Schomburg from 1925. I also have some OA too. Would be an honor to be in one of your videos one day 😄
Thanks my friend! I e-mailed the Schomburg estate back in 2016 to let them know how prominently Alex was featured in the Top Golden Age Cover poll I did in partnership with Heritage, CGC, and a couple of friends (Ben Labanog and Cat Conrad). Since then, Susan and I have e-mailed occasionally. She brought in her sister, Alicia, for this interview. It was an honor working with them.
Thanks J. Lentz. I met Susan through a project I worked on a few years ago and we have e-mailed back and forth a time or two between then. She and her sister were gracious enough to accept the interview.
Hi Malibu. Are you referring to Marvel Mystery #4? Yeah, I love that book. First subby cover in the golden age and foreshadows the U.S. entering into WW2. Plus, this is a very early Schomburg cover. His earliest covers were one month before (Daring Mystery 1 and Marvel Mystery 3).
Alex Schomburg is my favorite Golden Age artist, especially his WWII covers. I have 5 of his comic books. Do you know of any videos of him or of any comic books that he has signed?
Hi Rocket! I don't think I have seen any videos of him. I do know he signed a few books; I have one of them. But, he passed away before CGC came into existence so you're not going to see any Yellow-labeled CGC books with Alex's signature.

Thanks J. Lentz. I met Susan through a project I worked on a few years ago and we have e-mailed back and forth a time or two between then. She and her sister were gracious enough to accept the interview.
keston what are your thoughts on submariner #4 in that US warship is depicted firing at Naxi Warship before US officially entered WW2.
