As Optimus reaches for his gun in his back at 0:37, you can hear him roughly say "Sam, Run!", referencing Sam Witwicky, and implying that before he was knocked out, him and Sam were being ambushed.

This scene is both horrifying and heartbreaking! Optimus is legit having a PTSD episode. The last thing he remembered was protecting Sam. And poor Bee! Imagine how he feels about what happened. They never talked about what happened the Sam. Perhaps the memory was just too painful to bare. The Autobots have gone through so much. Makes you think about how our soldiers fare in war. But they. Do. Not. You can only try and move on.
My guess was that as a prime, he had to hide his grief and stress as much as possible but it could have been too much for Optimus to lose one of his only few human friends.
Maybe that’s why Optimus Prime and Bumblebee didn’t want to talk about Sam Witwicky in the film.

Factions such as nest were shut down, and now a different group of humans called cemetery wind has been hunting down transformers with the help of another bounty hunter transformer named lockdown. Optimus got ambushed by these humans, and other transformers such as Sideswipe and Dino have gone missing. They were most likely hunted down by cemetery wind. Ratchet and Leadfoot have also been murdered by this faction.

After Chicago, my head cannon, is they had all the autobot brought into a secured location and planned an ambush unfortunately Sam was caught in the crossfire and died

Cuz it’s really reflecting the fact that Sam and Optimus were very possibly being chased before one of them getting killed or arrested……and that’s also the last memory stayed in prime’s head like he got shot in the spark right at the moment he tried to save Sam but eventually got so damaged that he could only seeing Sam got killed in front of him, and he could only escape from the chase on his own with a shocked and depressed mind……so depressed that the only thing he wanted to do whenever he awakes is to call Sam to RUN……ಥ_ಥ

I’ve gotta say when I first saw this scene I was both scared terrified and sad simultaneously. Seeing Optimus one of my biggest role models like this truly hit close to home beaten and treated like an animal, betrayed by his allies and a handful of his friends dying along the way, Jazz, Ironhide, Sideswipe, Mirage, Roadbuster, Topspin, Leadfoot, and then eventually Ratchet who he later finds out died when he sees his head being melted. Say what you want about the Bayverse but the concept of the cybertronian race being treated as fugitives after they’ve saved our asses more than once from extinction is an interesting concept that I want to see explore hasbro more in depth as to who actually survived as 4 of the bots I listed were never confirmed while the other ones have been killed in previous or the current film.

I'm still trying to find where the fuq he says "Sam run" because all I hear is him grunting and then going "I'll kill you" followed by more grunting.. I think this is just some mandela effect where people say they've heard something, really want to believe there's lore hidden in this involving Sam and there's actually just nothing at all.

This was the best scene in the entire movie. Everything here is absolutely perfect from the music, to the overall tone. I wish the rest of the film could have been as perfect as this one scene.

Optimus and the other Autobots were being treated like the vets who returned from Vietnam, they got shit on for fighting a war that shouldn’t have been fought in the first place. All the hell they had been through, all the death they had seen enemies and allies alike even civilians, only to come back to be mistreated by their own fellow Americans.

If you actually listen closely in the first 10 seconds, when Optimus is on the ground, he says “Sam, run!” Which could mean they were together when they all got ambushed and Sam got caught in the crossfire and could explain why Sam is actually dead.

This scene is Absolutely Heartbreaking Seeing Optimus Prime so Broken and Peter Cullen Yet Again Has Proven Why He Will Always Be The One True Voice Of Optimus Prime just showing how Optimus Prime has fallen from a Strong and Powerful Leader to a Literal Broken Shell of His Former Self. It’s So Unfair The Autobot’s saved Humanity from Being Possible Enslavement and Extinction By The Decepticon’s and what do they get for Saving Them being Hunted Down and Killed.
The worst thing is that in the world of the bayverse they were never valued or treated as heroes unlike the avengers who, even though they destroyed a city, were still loved, but here in the movie you could see how they even set up posters that promoted fear of the autobots:, (

What I love about Transformers is that, like Star Wars, it's a Feel over Think, even though it's not Space Opera. It's more concerned w/ the characters as much as the action and score more than the technologies of both aliens and humans

As sad and hurt Ratchet Death in this movie, I believe this scene when we introduced to Optimus Prime is the most emotional, saddest and heartbreaking scene I have ever scene in the Bayverse movies. Cause in ROTF and DOTM, when we introduced to Optimus Prime in the movie, they show how badass and awesome Optimus is. Keep in mind, this is the same Optimus Prime that sliced and dice a Decepticon Army like they were made of butter from Dark Of The Moon. But in this movie, Optimus is in really bad shape, he is dirty and rusty, pieces are falling off him and leaked energon, he barely stand up and hold his gun, he hurts really bad. When I first watched this movie in theaters back in 2014 with my family, when this scene played, not just me got teared up and cried, my sister who is not even a fan of Transformers, also felt sad for Optimus and cried. So good job Micheal Bay for giving a really good and emotional scene.

I was just rewatching g1 (the good part, not season 3) and honestly I frickin' love both the original and Bayformers and don't really care much for the rest. A bay film with Prime acting like the g1 dad character and very little human screen time is probably the best thing I can imagine.
Transformers Prime is another adaptation that was fire.
0:32 - 0:34 optimus says “SAM RUN!” meaning optimus still remembers sam and told sam to run because maybe after the war of Chicago the military or them tracked him down and were trying kill optimus and sam but optimus told sam to run away so he wont get hurt (im not the one who originally found this detail i just read a comment about this) and plus i feel like optimus was traumatized of what happened and thats why i think he took this form before he gets his new look in age of extinction (my theory anything i said is not confirmed to be true or never will be true)

Optimus being in fear hiding made me feel confused yet terrified as a kid. Because Autobots are the good guys. And Optimus getting ready to fight was scary.
If you pay attention closely while he’s struggling to transform you can hear ‘’Sam run’’ indicating that Sam was killed in-front of him
You can hear Optimus say Sam run so it's safe to say Sam was either killed by a government attack or captured and being used for information

Say what you want about the transformer movies 3-5 I loved the whole trilogy sure the later ones weren't as good but still
Personally, I like Age of Extinction more than Revenge of the Fallen. That's just the worst one (IMO). I find Age of Extinction enjoyable. Certainly not perfect but it's a lot of bang for your buck. And has Dinobots and a great villain. Too bad about The Last Knight though..
