It's weird how I've been on flights with turbulence way worse than that and no one reacts except me. One time the plane dropped so hard I left my stomach in Los Angeles. The guy next to me kept snoring.
Yeah, thats true. Turbulence is really nothing to be worried about. I have been on flights going over 14 hours or more non stop and frequently experienced medium to sever turbulence. I just sit there under the seat belt watching movies on the airplanes console or saved on my mobile. I can't sleep though in that rocking and shaking cabin.
I wish all captains had that kind of customer service for regular people who don't understand how safe they really are even in the heaviest of turbulence. It would help a lot of ppl with anxiety for sure.
I wouldn't exaggerate too much. If turbulence is extremely heavy especially for prolonged periods of time it can certainly stress the aircraft, cause the autopilot to disconnect etc. Most of the time it doesn't get that severe and of course pilots are highly trained but there is always a small possibility of something going wrong. I'd also make the distinction between "heavy" and "severe" turbulence. The former is usually no problem but the latter is something that needs to be avoided.
@@matthewrammig because it can be scary for the passengers. The pilots know roughly how long it will take them to get through a turbulent patch. It make it less of a worry when the pilot tells you everything is ok
@7577 yes, it’s very much appropriate to make an announcement when going through turbulence say in cruise; where I would inform the cabin that I’m turning on the “Fasten seatbelt sign” for safety. But I would never attempt to quell somebody’s fears by reassuring them that we have control of our airplane. ESPECIALLY, on final and I don’t know ANY other pilots that would honestly.

For pilots, this is routine and their job. They learned in flight school how to land in such weather conditions. And they keep practicing it in the flight simulators.
I wish our pilot had said something like this on our Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Edinburgh in January! We had horrendous turbulence and then we had to do an emergency landing in Amsterdam because of a burning smell. The decent was rapid and unlike some flights where people cheer when you land after bad turbulence, everyone on our plane was in complete silence. People were crying and praying on the way down. Staff at the Amsterdam airport told us they couldn’t believe that our flight had ever even taken off due to Storm Isha.
I’m not a fan of turbulence, but this didn’t seem bad. I’ve been in turbulence where people were screaming and plane was tossed around in a storm coming from Dominican Republic.
@@StellaandPeteyBulldogs yeah I’m a pilot and it’s not my or any other pilot or person I’ve ever known’s thing. It totally sucks! How can anyone feel safe when what's carrying you is shaking that much when precision and control is required to safely land. Add on top of that the fact landing is the most dangerous part of a flight alongside takeoff plus the fact that landing is basically a controlled stall and you'll realize it makes sense for people to be afraid.
Nothing unusual with thunderstorms and some terrain at the time of turbulence. The layer of turbulence was just above the surface but not at ground level for landing. Anything super intense at ground level or having to do with vertical sheer occurring just above ground would typically have been avoided with an abort.

I experienced my first flight with turbulence last week flying into Rijeka, Croatia. At times the plane dropped (no idea how many feet), but the sensation where you feel your innards move upwards was unmistakable. I just sat through it all calmly. Others around me seemed quite worried. Many passengers were clutching the seats in front with both hands. Some threw up. One young lady across the aisle slept through the whole thing! The pilot went round twice and in the end abandoned the idea of landing at Rijeka and we ended up 300km away in Treviso, Italy. 10 hours (4.5 hrs waiting for luggage then a coach) and a road trip from Italy, through Slovenia later, we finally reached our apartment in Rijeka.

Great video. The turbulence that you experience while landing is usually when the aircraft cuts through the clouds. Its harmless and very mild. Dreadful one is clear air turbulence (CAT) that happens at altitudes above 15000 feet. Thats much worse. Usually seen above the deserts during hot summers. Walking people and loose objects could be flung around. Thats supposed to be caused by air pockets (rather vacuum pockets) created due to heat or otherwise. Fortunately, modern airplanes are much stronger than the might of the nature as far as CAT is concerned. You can enjoy turbulence as an experience if you like 🙂
