    The point is Mako was going to die and he himself knew it. That’s why it’s his sacrifice. But there was no way Bolin was going to leave his brother behind after everything they’ve been through. This time it was HIS turn to save his brother.

      Back when the episodes first released, I was one of the people who thought Mako should've died as a "real" sacrifice, but now that I'm a bit older, I understand that the willigness to die for a good cause in itself is already the greatest sacrifice. He was ready, that's what matters.

      Honestly, the whole Korra series is much underrated. I can't understand, why so many people (still) hate this show. I can understand that this isn't as good as Avatar TLA, but Korra never tried to be like Avatar, never was.
      The Legend of Korra is a whole new world, a whole new plot in this universe. Also Korra, she is a very strong, independent, clever and especially a good Avatar.
      So many things are good in his own way. The Story, the Characters, the World, the Animation, the MUSIC, literally all of it :)
      Korra has so much memorable moments, kinda more like Avatar tbh.

      @@mac_attack_zach I think they did it just right, they gave us a sense that Mako was going to die, they showed us how strong family bonds are between brothers or blood family for that matter, the emotion and energy circulating through this scene is overwhelmingly strong, Bolin came back showing that he couldn't hold true to their agreement, he had to know that his brother was safe, which proves my point of emotions, only somebody driven by something like that would turn around in the face of death when that person themselves told you to leave. Although I'm generally a big fan of Korra, this is one scene I absolutely would never change. I got the same feeling when Bolin was being overwhelmed by Ghazan in the finale and Mako shows up IMMIDIATELY after his fight with Ming-Hua and Bolin's face goes to a happier resting position when he see's him.

  • @willaverynerdyclarinetist6131

    The music embodies why I love Mako as a character. I'd almost say I think I love his character as much as, if not maybe more than Zuko's. Don't get me wrong, both are written phenominally, but Zuko's story is far more fantasy like. Mako's on the other hand is down to earth, and real. The mistakes he makes are all mistakes we make too. He screws up with Korra, he screws up with Asami, he screws up with even his own brother sometimes. But he's willing to lie down on a bed of nails face first for them all, and his city. Is he a screwup? Yes. But aren't we all? And that's why he's OUR screwup. And we love him for it.

      @@quinnmorgan7644 he gets in back in Ruins, though. Yeah I do think Mako dying would have greatly affected LoK's ending and not in a good way. It would have been a really bleak ending. Their victory over Kuvira wouldn't have felt as "happy." Bolin automatically gets a pretty devastating ending. I just wish they had either committed more to that sacrifice by maybe framing it so that he was doing it for Bolin more than anything. Also that the injuries he sustained had a more lasting effect on him, like him losing bending in that arm permanently, or to take a more positive route, maybe his bending becoming even stronger as a result of his what he did.
      Yeah, I liked that Bolin was stubborn in not leaving his brother. Once Mako told him his plan, he might have even already decided he would go back for him but didn't tell him because he knew Mako wouldn't approve of Bolin risking his life like that.

    In my personal opinion, I see that Mako himself was willingly ready to sacrifice himself and knew he was going to die was the greatest sacrifice. Not many people have the guts to be able to willingly electrocute and blow up a robot to save an entire city from the inside at the very center of the explosion.
    Furthermore, Bolin is very stubborn and therefore would be unwilling to leave his brother behind. Mako took care of Bolin ever since the both of them were kids, always there to protect and defend his little brother, and Bolin would show no hesitation to show Mako the same price and care.
    Mako shouldn't have died, and I am glad he did not, but I see how his sacrifice would've impacted the show entirely. However, Mako's willinglyness to give his life to protect tens of thousands of others was the greatest sacrifice in this case. To give away your life in order for many others to live prosperus and happy lives, and to be able to willingly do it without any fear or hesitation, is definitely the greatest sacrifice one has to offer.

    • @archangia3119
      @archangia3119 Před 3 lety +40

      I actually disagree with this particular argument. Mako's death, while a good arc for his character, at this point wouldn't have really elevated the stakes anymore, as his actions destroy the weapon and lead to the Korra-Kuvira climax of the entire battle. Hiroshi's death (which was quite grisly, to be honest) was the stakes-raiser for this battle. He and the entire Fire Nation fleet Iroh brought to fight Kuvira's weapon. And the fact that EVERY nation up to that point had stood and fallen against it.
      Mako's death would've forced the finale to be a lot more somber than it was given the leeway to be this way, and taken away from the canonization of Korrasami (which was foreshadowed for the past 2 seasons, so it was clearly meant to be there).
      If either 1) this episode had been the penultimate rather than THE finale or 2) the show was renewed for a 5th season, then Mako could've died without retracting from the overall story.
      I'm sure there's a timeline where the writers had Mako die and we're debating whether he shouldve lived or not lol

    • @ellemars1817
      @ellemars1817 Před 3 lety +6

      @@archangia3119 I definitely agree that it would have been so much better if this had been the penultimate episode with the series finale being a more low-key epilogue of sorts. Hiroshi's death was definitely a stakes-raiser, but what I find kind of weird (and I blame how quickly they had to pace everything for the last two episodes) is that for all the emotional buildup with him and Asami reconciling, there really isn't much emotional fallout.
      I think my issue with Mako in Book 4 is that while I actually really liked him this time, they barely did anything with him! He was practically a background character. So his non-existent season-long arc suddenly ending in him doing something as big as nearly sacrificing himself didn't really feel that earned. It's a shame, because this could have been a really strong defining moment, whether he had died or not. I kinda get the feeling the writers had bigger plans for Mako initially (what with him nearly being with the Fire Nation princess) and also seemingly in a frustrated position at the start of the season, being Wu's glorified babysitter, but those plans kinda dissipated toward the end.

    I mean, when you have such an emotional song like this and a climatic build-up, having Mako come out unscathed is kind of a missed opportunity. I don't think Mako should have died, but having him lose him arm or gain a prominent scar would have been better for the finale. I personally wished then when Mako blew up the spirit vines it would have looked like he died but he was just transported to the Spirit world or something, and the rest of the team would have to go find him. It would have made for a great plot in a short spinoff series or a storyline in the comics.

    • @Peonywinx
      @Peonywinx Před 3 lety +7

      Yes! I would've loved it to have happened that way! The emotional impact is powerful during this scene, but sort of undermined by how quickly we see Bolin rescuing him. I would've been devastated if he died, but I do wish they had waited longer to show that he survived. They should have only found him at the end of the episode, after a long enough time had passed that the characters (and the audience) had confronted the possibility that he really might be dead.

    I loved ONLY this moment in season 4. It was the coolest moment. And I honestly wish that Mako had perished here because I believed and it was confirmed in the books that the writers failed to make him a secondary protagonist and that they had no idea what to do with him. He was just there to eat up time.
    When you don't know what to do with a character, you give them the ultimate role: exit the stage. But the few competent thst remained knew that he had a loyal fanbase that would eat anything except getting killed off. So they trapped themselves into a corner and did nothing with him thus condemning him to just becoming a bungling henchmen to Korra. Same for Bolin.

    It's a shame Mako was given a nonexistent arc throughout Book 4, because this season is where I think he was the most likable. And I actually really liked Mako. He was still irritable sure, but he was also a lot more levelheaded and understanding this time. So while I really did like this scene, it kinda felt like it came out of nowhere and was just there to give him something to do in the final fight. He even completely disappears during the fight on the street! It honestly did feel like the writers were just trying to shoehorn in an emotional death fakeout in the end. And this was their last ditch effort to gain Mako some sympathy (since they butchered his character).
    He didn't need to die, I just think his arc should have been fleshed out to culminate at this point in the story. And the seeds were there in the previous seasons, but they really weren't given due attention. We know Mako's pretty self-sacrificing, but beyond the love triangle, the show didn't seem interested in developing that character. This scene could have been framed so that they somehow needed to overload the generator to get to Kuvira, making more narrative sense for Mako to do it. Then we'd have our emotional goodbyes before they leave him with all that lightning and whatnot and part ways, only to have a happy reunion in the end when they see he survived, only with some serious injuries. It would have felt like more of a sacrifice, because at that moment the others and Bolin especially would most likely think he'd die doing it.

    ❤ No, Mako does not die in "The Legend of Korra." Despite the dangerous situation where he overcharges the spirit energy core in Kuvira's mecha suit, he survives the explosion thanks to Bolin, who comes back to rescue him. Mako is injured but alive at the end of the series

  • @fabianhernandezgalicia410

    A lot of people hates Mako but we have to be honest. Every character did something wrong and that's because they are humans. Mako was wrong when he wasn't honest about his feelings for Korra and cheat Asami when Korra kiss him and he doesn't say nothing to her. In season 2 if you think Mako was the toxic in his relationship with Korra let me tell you that you are wrong. Korra always was angry with him because he didn't agree with some of her opinions and if you think your couple always have to agree with you well you are a kid haha and he was also wrong when he didn't tell korra that they have already broke up. In book 3 he has not very time in scene but he was trying to found his way, trying to do what he think was correct and try to help people. He was strange with Korra and Asami because he know that he hurt them and in book 4 was trying to teach Wu that he has to help people and Mako say to him that he was trying to do his life without a girl or couple. In the end we see that Mako almost sacrifice himself for what he thinks was right. And if we compare that with the Mako of book 1/2 that only try to be cool or awesome we know that he grew up a lot like a character.

    • @fabianhernandezgalicia410
      @fabianhernandezgalicia410 Před 3 lety +1

      And about Korra, yes in book 1 and 2 she was mmm arrogant and think that because she was the avatar she had the right to do whatever she wants and that she was invincible. She was toxic with Mako in book 2 and she was a little bad with Asami in book 1. But she grew up in book 3 and 4, she knew that sometimes we lost but we should have hope always. She learn that she needs her friends, family and masters and most of all she learn that the avatar is not about be cool or powerful is about do the right thing and bring balance to the world. Korra is a character who grew up a lot to me. Bolin also grew up but in book 2 he was very wrong because come on who doesn't believe in his brother and also Asami doesn't believe in Mako besides he help her. But well in season 3 and 4 Bolin was really cool. And Asami I wish they give her more time in screen but her scenes with his dad in book 4 were real beautiful and for me she was an inteligent character that wasn't toxic and she always wanted to help so maybe she has not to grew up.

    • @fabianhernandezgalicia410
      @fabianhernandezgalicia410 Před 3 lety +2

      And a lot of people think that Korrasami was forced but for me it wasn't, Nickelodeon prohibided the writers to show us about Korrasami but they handled it fine when they give us little hints in the series and in the end when they walk to spirit world. We can see what happened after in comics without restrictions. Korra and Asami are a great couple and we can see Korra like a mature girlfriend.
