Exactly. I had the same thought

@@MADMANGAM3R Nintendo would probably take the video down.
Especially with it being a handheld. It's just a beautiful thing.
The video I have been waiting for 7 months! Well worth the wait!!! Also cant wait for the SteamDeck OS version as well!
Is launchbox coming to deck ?
What do you mean Steam Deck OS version...?!
@@DeltathRiylaan well obviously 😂😉
@@legin3753 Obviously what?!
@@DeltathRiylaan that
My favorite part of the steam deck is that it's a computer as well. You can plug it into your tv and use a bluetooth controller, and play these games on the big screen and then take it mobile as well, just like the Nintendo switch. I wonder if you're able to use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse at the same time?
You probably could, most old laptops from 2015 could easily handle 4 Bluetooth signals.
you can
You can because the SteamOS is basically a Linux distro. There is the desktop version that you can use Steam Deck like a regular PC.
You can
Probably could even run AutoCAD on it or FreeCAD with a mouse.
Thanks for testing Shadow of Colossus! I remember trying to emulate that game on my fully specced pc back in the days, and being barely able to move.. Granted, that was probably more that 10 year ago, but seeing it run relatively smoothly on a handheld is still damn impressive!! :)
I suspect some of these emulators would run better in SteamOS, as they have native Linux versions, and it seems there are performance issues with the Deck generally in Windows.
I agree. I've seen that PCSX2 and RPCS3 have versions available. Are there any emulators that don't have a Linux version?
@@hw6664 i think cemu
Also keep in mind this is AMD, while most stuff was tested on Vulkan AMD has bad OpenGL drivers. However, on Linux you don't use AMD's OpenGL drivers but the valve sponsored Mesa drivers which do OpenGL very well.
So if anything runs on OpenGL expect the Linux version to be better. For Vulkan i don't think its a big difference but Windows not hogging the CPU should still help and of course the Mesa drivers are still more mature.
@@prismflux5129 Yep Cemu has none(but they are working on one) and the Xbox 360 Emulator Xenia has no Linux version yet.

Cemu runs great through WINE/Proton and a Linux version is being developed.
For everyone interested: Steam offers Retroarch within SteamOs, you dont have to fiddle around with Windows and can have more power through natively running the emulators
Sigh....
That's great.
Is this true? Everywhere else I read said you'd have to install Windows.

Ordering mine today since I was waiting for your thoughts. Thank you for the tests!
This is awesome. I really appreciate your videos, especially this one with all that it entails.
This thing is actually more powerful than I initially thought… I am actually quite impressed.
Thanks for doing Demon’s Souls, ETA! I can’t get my hands on a PS5 so I was hoping emulating PS3 on the Steam Deck might be a viable option (and you confirmed it is indeed). Looking forward to your SteamOS emulation video!
The PS3 version honestly is the better of the two anyways, so that's a good thing as well. However, we know from teh Nvidia leaks still that Demon Souls is one of Sony's games they've been looking to put on PC anyways
Great video and the more i see about the steam deck the more i want one.
BTW, i love the animated wallpapers 😍
This thing is a must have. Especially for retro gaming.
It would be great if you could include input latency measurements when comparing emulator performance. On one of these Ryzen-based handhelds, you could get 4X scaling at 60fps, but with double the input latency for some weird reason.
This is what I was looking for! I cannot wait for Emulation with Steam deck :D time to visit my favorite retro titles on the go 😌
Extremely exciting to see. I can't wait to get my hands on one.

Officially crowned the King of Handhelds.
But wouldn't running these emulators through SteamOS be a better option than through Windows given there's apparently some performance left on the table?
He mentioned in the video that SteamOS emulation will be reviewed shortly. A lot of people were asking about Windows performance, so he decided to push this video out 1st.
He did the Windows testing now, while he still had Windows installed on the Deck. He fully intends to do SteamOS testing as well but that requires reimaging the Steam Deck. Why do that twice if you don't have to?
Love you channel
Glad to hear it! I have a Q1 pre-order in, but no invite to finalize the purchase yet
Thanks for showing Launchbox! I will definitely use that as my main Windows frontend if they get dual booting working.
Eagerly looking for something like this video but on SteamOS (I know you mentioned it also).
I want to create emulation libraries on SD cards and swap them loosely by console generations. I see you actually voiced a video over on

Last time I checked (probably 2 months ago) it was running with Wine and videos didn't work because lf codec issues. So no.
I’d love to see how this interacts with the Nex Dock if possible that would be insane

Nah no need to be jealous just be patient and humble
Tip for when you get your deck:
Do not (and I mean it) install Windows. The few games that you wouldnt be able to play arent worth the many flaws of windows on the deck.
Windows has: An almost unusable UI for touchscreen devices, No proper sleep support for the deck. Worse performance......

Welp, you just made me get a reservation for the deck. You're pretty much the ones (or maybe the only one yet) to get the benchmarks and showcase of emulation on the deck. I can only imagine it'll get better with the optimization on the deck and the emulators to enhance it a bit more.
I'd like to see how something like batocera boots and runs from the SD card. Seen that as a suggestion to keep from installing too much to the main drive, especially if you have one of the lower capacity versions.
The Steam Deck actually makes the Odin Pro look overpriced since it's only $100 more and Odin only has Snap845 from 4 years ago. That's not powerful enough for GameCube from my experience owning a Pixel 3.
Oh man, I would’ve totally sprung for an Ayn Odín Pro if I hadn’t already reserved a Steam Deck before the Odín hit IGG. But yeah, I agree, the Steam Deck is far superior in every regard
The Odion Pro runs 1080p, if it were running only 800p like the Steamdeck it would run better too.

Careful posting any videos with the YUZU emulator, Nintendo has been slapping those down right and left with their lawyers. Linus from LTT said recently that he was going to make a video where he dumps his games and runs them on the steam deck and dares Nintendo to give him a notice to take it down since they seem to be picking on smaller channels. Should be interesting.
I noticed you didn't show any footage of Nintendo games...for obvious reasons. 😆
Thanks for SOTC!
Amazing performance, and we're only in the early stages yet. It'll be interesting to see where we are in a hear or two. Fingers crossed that the teknoparrot-team Will do a somewhat optimized release, since it's a bit picky about gpus.

I look forward to getting my Steam Deck in 2023, since that's about where the wait-list is. -sigh-
Thanks to covid and manufacturers realizing they can get people to pre-order things over a year in advance, making everyone scramble to get in line and in turn they get more sales. I kinda want one too but the wait is so long. :| The only other gripe I have with it is the size and battery life, which is part of the reasons why I settled on the AYN Odin. If everything goes smoothly I’ll get it in 2 more months. But man the power of the Steam Deck is really great to see. If only the wait wasn’t so long.

If you would only compare the performance on the emulation only, how does that compare to, say, running the game on the latest iPhone or Galaxy?

Yeah Ryuji*x and Y*zu is the one I wish ETA Prime talking about .. Nintendo is very paranoid
Would be better had he used SteamOS instead of Windows...
I remember getting a bunch of emulators working on my original PSP, then never playing any of them for some reason
You've missed out. I hacked a PSP and loaded it with emulators and ROMS. It was an awesome machine.

Redream on Linux gives me some static artifacts that I can't figure out how to remove in the settings when playing games. Flycast standalone works good even with Vulcan, but not as good of a UI as Redream.
Flycast is on Retroarch core library though. You could make it work properly with Emulationstation to look great on the deck.
That version supports chd to save some space.
@@moister3727 Thanks for the reply, I did install Retroarch yesterday and tested flycast and both options work with CHDs but Retroarch has a slightly better gui.
Hoping me get some step by step instructions for booting Batocera from sdcard or I may look into Steam Rom Manager over the weekend when I have more time.
@@glennshoemake4200 I don't know if Batocera has good Dreamcast support, but I do use Linux which works wonderfully with Retroarch.
I don't know if this may help, is Emulationstation avaible on Steam Deck or if is there a way to download it through Discovery? That is how I play most of my old games, but I'm not 100% sure if it's avaible there.
If not you may want to download it through the AUR.
It's just to get everything working through SteamOS and not have to mess around with bootloaders and partitions.

The video everyone’s been waiting for
I think ETA PRIME is the Michael Fisher of emulation. He has a great voice. I like him, Taki Udon, Mr. Sujano, and Tech Utopia. I've heard some negative towards ETA and Taki. "Oh, they're sellouts. They never say anything bad about a device because it's given to them for free. They're paid shills."
But overall, I like them all. Been a huge fan of Metal Jesus and The Gaming Historian for many years. The emulation / gaming scene should be a positive environment like sneakerheads and CZcams vloggers. Not full of hate and venom. We should be helping each other out and not hurting one another.
What I wanted to see is this exact same stuff but with the tdp showing, specially in regards of cemu, yuzu, citra, rpcs3 and xenia...
Last weak on linux all those consume like 25watts+ (definitely not portable) and it wasn't perfect framerate... Windows on steam deck is cap at 16watts if I remember correctly so battery life would be better there but Its also not that greatly optimized in windows at the moment.
Hopefully a tdp version of this video could be in a future moment... Can't call it a king of emulation in handheld when is pretty much the same as the aya neo, I will put the "in a budget price" tag XD.
Unfortunately we have no way of showing the TDP in windows yet, Afterburner and HWInfo will not display it yet.
Sorry but, I can be wrong, aren't you mixing different things ? Like the 15W TDP (thermal) (that should be respected under Linux also) for the *APU* with 25W pulled from the battery ? (APU + screen + networking + audio + input + fan). Also, I guess you can do that for windows also, but it's quite easy under linux, for all the emulators where you see it's not able to sustain the 60fps, BUT the cpu is NOT 100% and the GPU is not 100%, you can just disable some CPU cores to keep the temperature lower, so the available cores will run faster (if I'm not wrong)(I think they did not put it the UI, but I saw people have done experiment about it)
@@potens1 With TDP I mean both the wattage and the top threshold that is available at the moment in windows, which is 15watts (also it seems apps don't have access to measure wattage at the moment it seems).
My current issue with the steam deck on emulators is that everything wiiU, PS3 and xbox360 is consuming 25watts+ (it's not just 25watts...) which it defeat the purpose of the handheld mode if it is getting that power consumption... All is due to the zen2 cores mostly.
@@potens1 There are only 4 cores, so there is not much to disable. Also, disabling cores generally does not increase the performance of the remaining cores significantly, especially with zen 2 cores being as efficient as they are at low power ranges. Even if the remaining cores run faster, the total power consumption of the remaining cores should be higher than if there were no diabled cores, because the power scaling curve is nonlinear.
@@mingyi456 From what I saw, disabling 3 cores (so, running on two threads, one core), it's able to sustain 3.5GHz on it, so, if the app you are running is CPU bounded but not "heavy" multithread will be faster. About the power, I don't know, I saw some bench when (On the game "Control") on two threads, the total power draw is about 7-8W to get more or less 55fps (static, not playing)(CPU 90% at 3.5Ghz), activating all cores jumps to 14W, same scene (all CPU 40%, 2Ghz) (static, not playing, just letting the game running), I'm pretty sure there is no one-size-fits-all, but times will tells if there are some profiles to set for each emulation/game (and it will takes time). Also, I guess before doing this deep trying to get the most of it, the easiest seems to use gamescope to reduce the TDP (the sweet spot seems to be between 11 and 13W TDP)
Thanks ETA.. love your videos and watch almost every day. By the way, which Bigbox theme are you using?
I love how careful you were this video but delivered what many wondered. Your secret is safe lol
Is there any performance difference with Windows vs SteamOS? Cause apperently the windows GPU driver is not great which makes PC games perform much worse on windows than SteamOS with proton.
2:50 Duckstation would be much better choice, better accuracy, better optimizations and more options to enhance the image even at 720p like MSSA.
AFAIK emulation performance on SteamOS will be on par or even better than Windows, but wait until ETA does his SteamOS emulation video and see for yourself.
If you benchmark the performance with programs that have native versions on both OS's Linux will always get higher scores because of less background processes, so more available power. For emulation it depends with each emulator, but if they already have Vulkan and Linux support in general, it's very likely more performant on Linux/SteamOS.

I play games so rarely (super busy) that when I do, I just like to enable Codes of some sort (like Action Replay) to let me enjoy the game without spending months trying to figure out a strategy, as sometimes weeks go by before I get a chance to get back to ONE game, and by then I forgot the whole purpose of the story. When you run these emulation of the Steam Deck (mine to arrive after Q2), is is still possible to enter Codes or use other software like WeMod (I purchased the mobile app 4 months ago, I still have to use it LOL)? Thanks ETA... Big Fan !!!

Little tip for Jet Set Radio Future emulation testing.
My current PC actually handles the starting area just fine.
The place that got REALLY problematic (lots of stuttering) was 99th Street.. maybe test there instead? ^-^
That's inherent to the game. It chugs there on a real Xbox
Huh, ok. :o
I don't remember it chugging that bad on OG xbox.. o.O
I was wondering if you are avoiding Nintendo games when using the Dolphin emulator? I've heard Nintendo is copy striking channels who use the emulator with their games on the Steam Deck. Many tech channels were reporting on this.
If it quacks like a duck... Think the answer is pretty obvious there, no one is taking on Nintendo whilst they're on this silly warpath.
@@blunderingfool it’s sad and pathetic really, it’s not like copy striking those videos is actually gonna deter anyone lol
Most of the Deck's struggles comes from the emulators themselves and not the actual hardware. I was surprised it ran PS3 better than OG Xbox. That's where my smartphone can't reach. PS3-level and beyond. It stutters even on Wii.
From what I’ve seen, a lot of struggles on the deck that he had might be because the deck performs bad when using windows OS
Very true. It could probably run xbox better if the emulator was more optimized
OG Xbox is still a lot less mature than PS3 emulation right now, funny enough. That scene laid dormant for a very long time, and only in the last few years has it really picked up steam.
Awesome. I can’t wait to watch this. I love your videos! I tell ya if this thing can emulate the Ratchet and Clank games and the Sly Cooper games from PS2 then that’s end game for me. I’ll just sell my switch. There are always games in the steam store that I want but aren’t on the switch. Rarely does it go the other way.
Same TBH. Only reason I have my Switch is for exclusives like Triangle Strategy etc. once the Switch goes EOL in another 3-4 years I’m gonna hack that bitch and use it to emulate all sorts of things.
The Steam Deck seems to even be able to emulate Switch games pretty well, unless you play switch games online there's really no reason not to sell it and get a Steam Deck if you can at this point.
I'm not even into emulation ... because I dont have any ROMs and the only system I would be interested is AMIGA 500.

good video, but you should really stick to steamOS,it will likely have more performance, less overhead, quick resume, and it is the only OS valve truly supports.

I imagine running these emulators on SteamOS/Linux would provide a lot more performance, I've seen windows take off as much as 50% performance capability on some comparison tests from other reviewers of the deck, and it's crazy just how bloated windows is.
Some of these emulators might just have better or just only directx api support is my quess
It has nothing to do with Windows vs how well the emulator is optimized.
@@o-parts Windows has more resource overhead, so if in theory both emulator versions have the same optimization, Linux will always be ahead because of that. You also see that in games that have native versions on both platforms.

Can you do a video on a home console version of steamdeck? Maybe ChimeraOS installed onto a ryzen mini PC. with the steamdeckui flag enabled? Would love to see what a deck-like home console could do. How it would function from a usability standpoint.
This system is legit a game changer for me. I now feel complete. I feel for the first time I can easily play any game on the go...except like ps4 Xbox one games but even then I can use xcloud or buy some of the Sony exclusives on steam. With this and the switch and the ps5 I don't think you really need anything else.
Can i ask how you got redream going?
I prefer redream to flycast in general aswell, but the default for emudeck is flycast?
Ive heard some mention redream has artifact related problems occur(unsure if it is still the case)
Awesome, thanks ETA Prime, best channel in YT
Random question ETA Prime when you are in Windows mode on the steam deck can you use the steam controls to adjust the battery settings and what not I am curious about that?
Sweet. I'll be happy when I get one. 3 years from now.
thanks for the video. you tested with the APU@15W but surely you can push it up to 25-30W no? while keeping it plugged in. that's the way i plan on playing when i receive (when?) my steamdeck.
Dolphin Blue and Atomiswave possible as well ?
And was wondering how that can handle Scanlines , Bloom and CRt effects for old style Emu ?
Any test ? Thanks for this video, very good, subbed !
not bad,not bad at all.I can't wait to get mine
