I once witnessed a Maori farewell at an airport in Aukland. A crowd of about 20 people were wishing their two friends farewell. The music was so sincere and powerful I broke into tears, and I am not a cryer, and although I appreciate most forms of music I have never been so instantly thunderstruck as I was that day. New Zealand is otherworldly gorgeous, the people are wonderful and the music is spectacular. I really did not want to leave.

Glorious. Been to New Zealand three times, absolutely loved it, if my kids and grandkids weren't here my husband and I would relocate like a shot and shake the dust of Oz off our feet. And if ever there was a language I'd love to learn, it's got to be Maori. Might actually have a stab at it. Wish me luck.

Kia ora from Aotearoa, NZ. Just letting you know a lot of Maori from Northland particularly Hokianga region have Dalmatian Tupuna (Ancestors). They came to NZ pre colonisation in the late 1700s to be gum diggers and whalers. A lot of Maori in this region have brown skin and blue or green eyes. So by ancestry according to traditions.....Kia ora whānau (family) we haven't met yet 😃

Oh.My.Word. That was as good (or better) than any classical choir singing in the greatest cathedral! What a privilege to have been able to hear it. It's amazing what people can achieve when they simply gather together and give it their all, isn't it? Thank you SO much to the choir and to the uploader! XX

As Maori, my heart is filled with the pain that comes from knowing that our gods/godesses (seen in the natural world) and our concept of the ever-presence of our ancestors, were supplanted by a Pakeha notion of one god. The people who brought Christianity to Aotearoa did so at the expense of my people. And the Mormons thought only a white person could attain status within their system. I hv no time for Christianity but I love my people and wish them te arohanui.
I now live in Hawaii and hv seen the cultural devastation inflicted upon our cousins.
    Kia kaha me te aroha!

Tika te korero. Although this is sung in the tune of Hallelujah the kupu (words) could never translate. What people need to understand is our Reo (language) is literally the language of the wairua (soul) hence why it don't matter what language you speak it's understood by the soul
