I've played Call of Cthulhu (pen n paper) for many years, one night we were too tired to play and looked up random lovecraftian movies, saw this, expected a terrible movie. It was one of the best movies ever and it felt like our own adventures were put perfectly to film.
Can you imagine how frustrating it would be if you were a deep one and had to go through the process of putting on human makeup and prosthetics for every video you did. What a chore
The craziest part is that the thirsty mermaid comes back into the story and is just like "hey bro, im your sister!" as if that makes everything alright. Gotta add incest into the whole fish ppl storyline. I guess she was the FMC the whole time cuz they swim off with each other in the end and live happily after.
Ah, i remember this movie. It was my introduction into HP Lovecraft. In spite of that, i still ended up being a fan of the author's work. Honestly, it's not the worst thing to be tied to the name of ol' Howard Philips. That dishonor goes to his cat.
LOL but speaking seriously, it feels like most people don't even touch HP Lovecraft movies even though there's so many good stories to cover. And the movie's people DO make usually aren't good (save for Nicholas Cage and friends in A Colour Out of Space)
@@anthonychristianson411 It's fairly hard to translate "unknowable eldritch horrors that break reality" into an effective visual medium, so when people try and adapt they use the more physical horrors - cultists and mutants and such. Those have been done better elsewhere, it's the unknowable and the inscrutable that makes lovecraftian horror, not the physical realm
@@samhartley6154 I respect your opinion but wholeheartedly disagree; countless movies have adapted the concept of lovecraftian horror into their work, enough so to the point where people have a generalized idea of what types of things fit that description. And personally I think Lovecraft's direct writings paint incredibly clear imagery that anyone with a somewhat twisted imagination should have no trouble taking and running off with. So the fact that the Nicholas Cage adaption of "colour out of space" is the only Lovecraft adaption that's been done well seems a bit like people are afraid to try rather than it not actually being doable. Especially considering all the crap that gets put out and labeled as "horror" these days
I like how, for whatever reason, there are multiple instances of Shadow Over Innsmouth being adapted and then called by an unrelated Lovecraft story. Also gotta love how they call it "Imboca" like a Banjo Kazooie MumboJumbo voice clip.

I watched this a while back after reading Lovecraft’s short story Dagon and the Shadow over Innsmouth and thought it actually nailed the vibe perfectly, aside from a few extremely goofy visual effects. I thought nobody knew about this!
I never understood why they didn’t just call this movie by the name of the actual short story it’s based on. The ACTUAL Dagon short story would have made an awesome film adaptation. It is really chilling and atmospheric.

Dagon is top tier B horror. Genuinely surprised it hasn't been remade with a bit more TLC on the make up effects. Seeing what Hellraiser did and knowing Lovecraft stories can be done right (Color Out of Space being the most recent example), it's truly surprising.

Dagon is up there with _Lair of the White Worm_ for being so bizarrely weird and out there that you just have to watch it at least once. Funnily enough, this movie hits the Lovecraft vibe very, very well. It's similar to _Dark Corners of the Earth_ in that regard. Gordon did a great job nailing Lovecraft's natural eeriness.
Lair of the White Worm was a pretty good movie, crazy weird but good. If you like vampire movies Habit starring Larry Fessenden from 1995 is a really good one.

The game "The Sinking City" took a LOT of inspiration from this movie, like the creature human hybrids, the fever dreams, Cthulhu, and it even takes place in the same city of Innsmouth.
I like this video format, good stuff! I wanted to point out it's not really fair to call out the box office since it only played in a little over a hundred theaters in Spain. Everywhere else it was released straight to video/DVD.
Loved dagon! I remember watching it on sci fi when it first came out. Was really big into elder scrolls III Morrowind. So Dagon was awesome to watch as there felt like a lot of similarities to Dagoth Ur and the Sleepers.
By far one of the best films the Fantastic Factory ever produced. The setting and some scenes are superb, too bad several performances and the script are not up to par. As a curiosity I think that this film is the first incursion of the actress Macarena Gómez in the world of cinema, with a role that fits her like a glove, especially for that strange beauty she has and that hypnotic gaze... Stuart Gordon is a fucking wizard, I think other than the few moments of regretable CG it's probably the best Lovecraft inspired monster FX - it feels like Bioshock mixed with Resident Evil. The main character is very Dead Alive/Braindead and quite odd considering all the weird and wild shit he goes through haha

I saw that last night as a spanish fan of Lovecraft, and i think its also my favorite film now. It actually follows kind of well "the shadow over innsmouth"'s plot for a big part, though the end doesen't really come from there. And as a curiousity, in spanish fish people talk in gallego i think which makes it pretty funny to watch since it's the best they could do to make you not understand them, but it just sounds like spicy spanish. Still i appreciate the "telephono", since it's literally how you say telephone in spanish. 10/10 must see

Call of Cthulhu is a decent game adaptation. Similar setting in a fishing village on a remote island where you play as a detective. Best one I’ve seen, but yea the vast majority are painfully bad
I love HP Lovecraft. I've got a couple books of his short stories. He may have been a problematic person to some people, but damn was he a creative writer.
It was the 1920s and the man had a joke cat name that wouldn't be out of place in a modern COD lobby, the only "problematic" thing here is someone's inability to get over themselves and enjoy someone universally considered of creative quality My gf got me his complete works it was a fine gift:)

And as a curiousity, in spanish fish people talk in gallego i think which makes it pretty funny to watch since it's the best they could do to make you not understand them, but it just sounds like spicy spanish. Still i appreciate the "telephono", since it's literally how you say telephone in spanish. 10/10 must see
You must love this movie to review twice but I aint mad its a fun movie that stuck with me for a while especially the fishlegs scene and ending monster scene.

Call of Cthulhu is a decent game adaptation. Similar setting in a fishing village on a remote island where you play as a detective. Best one I’ve seen, but yea the vast majority are painfully bad
I love HP Lovecraft. I've got a couple books of his short stories. He may have been a problematic person to some people, but damn was he a creative writer.
It was the 1920s and the man had a joke cat name that wouldn't be out of place in a modern COD lobby, the only "problematic" thing here is someone's inability to get over themselves and enjoy someone universally considered of creative quality
