  • Sir Nigel Gresley joins the Mail and a 90 at Carlisle. LOTS of engine moves! 03 July 24
    A cold day at Carlisle - and its July already! Still, it should make for some good steam effects from 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley with the Fellsman charter.
    Before 60007 arrived we see a number of light engine movements, including Freightliner 90 on a route learning turn from Crewe. The Tesco liner didn't let us down with its 40-odd containers heading north to Mossend.
    Sir Nigel Gresley arrived into Carlisle pretty much on time. The whole train was due to head out to Upperby soon after arrival. However the Logs arrived and.... well watch for yourself.
    At this point I had an Opticians appointment in the city but returned in time for the Fellsman stock returning to the station.
    Nothing uneventful about the departure back over the Settle & Carlisle line apart from a little slipping.
    Finally the Engineer's train from Tyne Yard passed with four wagons of sleepers!

    I've never been too sure about the blue livery for steam locos but I have to admit it's growing on me and Sir Nigel does look good in it.

      Well the A4s were originally in Blue so the BR Blue sort of fits. Thanks for watching

      @@LeslieGilpinRailways Yes and I think some of the GW Kings were also. I think over the years I became too fond of Brunswick green and so came to see that as the best colour for express steam locos although the Coronations were well suited to maroon. I'm not sure if the current shade of blue on Sir Nigel is the same as the originals but it does look good..

    At lest it was dry for you It was raining almost all morning where I am as well as cold and very windy. Hope the 57 driver takes note of what you said LOL, could of made a very slow departure. Apart from that some interesting workings. The mail train a good one to get.

      I spoke to that driver today after he brought the West Highland Pullman in - he wasn't aware that the Log train was almost alongside him - if he'd realised he would have waited!

      @@LeslieGilpinRailways That was good of him. A lot would set off for devilment. He would be concentrating on his own signal no doubt so I can understand him not being aware of the log train about to pass.

    Obviously, Nigel steals the show, but a great assortment... especially the Royal Mail and the interesting shot of the wood hauler and Nigel heading out at the same time!

      @LeslieGilpinRailways  Před 12 dny

      I;ve checked the video and that's what APPEARS to be happening. I believe it is an optical illusion, the same as that where spoked wheels appear to be going backwards when the wheel is going forward. The combination of shutter speed and frame rate are nigh on the same that of the spokes of the bogie wheels.If you look at other clips where SNG is running at a different speed you can see the spokes moving!

      @@LeslieGilpinRailways Freightliner recently bought a few of the old DB Cargo ones for a slightly bigger fleet. Still going strong, doing those overnight runs to Coatbridge + the Felixstowe/Ipswich to Manchester and Liverpool. Very nice locos I think - and much faster than the 66s, so valuable.
