  • This 2015 Ford Escape is making a weird metallic engine noise. What the heck is it?
Car drives perfectly fine, but the noise is loud enough to be concerning.
Post your ideas and thoughts in the comments below. If we figure this out, I'll make a follow-up video of course :)
    Thank you!

El Chorizero my mates family has been involved with Ford for 3 generations. They have won numerous awards for sales and had trips to the ford hq in the Us.
The reason for their success is after sales service giving them return customers. Its not always the dealer at fault. Car manufacturers can be an ass by their own after sales policy. My mates family has had their success through putting their clients welfare first. I have heard him quite angry and verbal with Fords reps on the phone over a warranty job. He knows when a client has a legit problem and will fight for them to get satisfaction. I have bought my cars from his family most of my life, because i know he will do his best for me. So dont always blame the dealer, sometimes they are dictated by a companies policy, sure at times dealers can be wrong by being too lazy to do paperwork and fob a customer off, until warantee is gone. Next time you buy a car he isnt on the list.

Just as a caution, take in note that harmonic balancer has no key ways and require special tools to time that engine. If you attempt to gun off that harmonic balancer bolt you can bend valves if the timing tools are not installed. And also what is with ford and stupid stretch belts.

For anyone out there wondering what this sounds means. I brought this up to my buddy and mechanic (one of the good ones) and he went on a drive with me in my Focus ST. He asked me to point out the noise and asked questions and gave descriptions of the individual noises he hear, until we landed on the same noise. In short, it’s normal. Every focus or eco engine powered Ford seems to do it. Listen next time to you see a newer Ford driving down a city street. Eventually you’ll know a Ford without even looking. Hope that helps.

One of the hardest jobs in car repair, is to identify the location of a noise. Sometimes its temperature related or humidty related but just try and find the whereabouts, nearly impossible. The stethoscope is ok for amplifying the sound, but as it travels through different mediums, its useless for locating. I would put it on the same "pull yer hair out " level as a water leak. Good luck with finding the source and if you appear bald on your next video, we'll all understand !!

I figure it's a timing chain issue--possibly the chain has rubbed through the plastic shoe on the tensioner even though it is a "low mileage" engine. It seems that noisy engines are commonplace today with turbocharging and direct injection.

Dude I have been trying to figure that out for 4 years now. Definitely not metal rubbing. It would have broke by now if it was grinding. But agreed ford knows what the defect is and as long as it last the life of the warranty (which they know it will, good luck on trade in value) they are safe. I know it is something with air and echo (harmonics) so won't affect engine but very inconvenient when you're in a ally and it sounds like your wheel is about to lock up any second

Ford DuraTech engines in particular are notorious for water pump noise, and it's the water pump in the bore. Take the stretch belt off and see if it goes away. If it goes away, then obviously A/C Compressor. If not, I'd look at the harmonic balancer, crankshaft, or turbo .

Are there any signs that it might be separating and walking off like the old 4.0s did? You're probably not old enough to know, but way back in the day, Ford had problems with their 2.3 Tempo/Topaz engines making metallic noises in the frt of the engine, with little to no observable failure. The fix was to replace the balancer. Keep us posted.

She changes the oil at every 4k with Mobile 1 synthetic and is really a little ol lady.. So I was thinking at 1st, this thing needs a decarb.. I sent it to a friend's shop that has the new 3m fogging system, 3 bottle process. By the seat of the pants, it seems to have more power, better response, BUT the noise is still there! Unscientific, non-mechanic opinion... but Ivan, that noise sounds somewhat familiar. I've heard other Escapes do that, and the noise is a little more acute on even the naturally aspirated 2.0L Focuses in the current/outgoing generation. I've just written that off as a character trait of some of Ford's direct injected designs.
Your company's ride might be a little louder than most with that, but that's really hard to tell through the camera. Safe travels on that roadtrip.

Sounds like the good old tensioner pulley sound, use to work at a Ford dealership in the service department, I have a 2014 Ford Escape titanium with the 2.0 eco boost and before anything went wrong I went aftermarket with the turbo, waste gate , blow off valve etc same with the break system, I went with drilled and slotted rotors high performance ceramic pads and upgraded the suspension with coilovers not to lower or modify anything but so the struts and shocks wouldn’t go out so fast , believe it or not the FsWorks turbo kit For the 2012 to 2016 ford focus ST or RS will work on the 2.0 eco boost engine without having to ref lash or program anything.

It's peppy and sporty when it runs well. Very cheap plastics on the interior, but then again that's the standard across the board nowadays. Not sold on long-term reliability of a turbocharged direct-injected engine. Fuel economy is meh 22mpg and a small tank so 300 miles is fill up time. It also beeps at everything like all Fords do. Just an average crossover with turbo power IMO.

Noticed a bit of audio to that reluctor ring when you twanged it with your thumbnail, wonder if that isn't the part doing the talking? Could slob in some RTV in a heavy bead, let it set up and see if a dramatic change was in the cards. In any event one would then be faced with the prospect of digging it back out of a pretty tight spot to never really get that job done proper. Not a serious suggestion then, but I would always be wondering about the best way to silence that ringing reluctor.

Does it have a integral pulley built into the balancer? I had a ranger that the rubber became un-bonded between the outer pulley and the inner drive portion of the balancer and it was slipping causing that noise and it eventually walked backwards taking out the crankshaft sensor.

Yeah, they told me the same thing about a constant vibration at idle on a 13 ford escape. Sold it for junk since nobody would buy it with the vibration. This week my son 2013 Fusion developed a rod piston bearing know noise. Could be flex plate but wasn't as we used a scope to go inside housing, no cracks. Other possibility is rod bearing or cylinder head crack. Runs good but noise is there at idle and worse when a/c is on or load on engine. Ford is junk period. Will never buy one...
