  • Had the chance to get some seat time with one of the new Cat GB124 Smart Grader Blade attachments. Thought this might be useful for other folks to navigate the different screens and buttons to utilize everything this attachment has to offer. I think it is the slickest attachment I have seen on the front of a skid steer. This is how you can use it right out of the box, but you can also add laser receivers and a rotating laser to it for elevation control, and if you want to get really high tech you can go to a full 3D grade control system installed to for more complex designs.
    If you want more information on the attachment here is the link to Cat:

    Hey Nathan....Just wanted to let you know. I purchased a GB120 (with the optional wings)....all because of your excellent video. I ordered it and waited 6 months. I've had it for 2 months so far and I LOVE it. So far I've used it to cut ditches on each side of my mile long gravel driveway.....also used it to spread CA6 gravel on the same drive. When I first got it, it was a little intimidating/confusing...but now I feel comfortable with it. There is definitely a learning curve....but once it clicks in your brain, it becomes second nature. Like you said, it's really slick! Again thank you for your help.....I've watched your video probably 20 times (and I learn something every time I watch it!).

      Hey there Marc! Well that’s a pretty cool comment man! That’s the kind of stuff that makes this CZcams effort worth it in the end, helping people out. Congrats on your attachment and getting familiar with it. I’m sure you’ll find plenty of use for it. Happy to help, I’m curious what did your dealer say when you told them you were buying it because of this guy you watched on CZcams haha - I should hit up the salesman for some commission 😂😂 take care good sir and happy blading. I bought it from Altorfer CAT in East Peoria....You'll find this hilarious.....The salesman was very patient and went outside to train me as best he could.......but when I was leaving, he said "there's this guy on youtube that does a nice job explaining it".....and he sent me a link to your video......I laughed and said, I've seen that video about 20 times!!! I told him just that....that CAT should pay YOU for doing the video....he said he thought CAT was going to come out with an "official" video sometime. Maybe you should contact CAT incorporated for a job !!!!!

      Handled it like a champ, I was knocking down gravel piles left from en end dump without issue. I think it’s a sweet combo. Yes the GPS is a heavy touch, but if you have the work for that system it’ll pay for itself in no time.

    Excellent!! ....I can't believe how little DETAILED info there's out there about how to work this thing....you made it understandable! Your explanation was perfect! I've got a new 259D3, and strongly considering this. A question...will the cross-slope automatically adjust itself regardless of the grade? For example....if I'm going up/down hills and the machine pitches right/left...regardless, the cross slope will stay locked into whatever you set it at ??? (5% in your video). I'll be using it on the farm to scrape/build some grass waterways in hilly areas where some erosion problems are happening.....do you think it would be good for this in your opinion? Thanks soooooo much Nathan!

    • @ironman3406
      @ironman3406  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Marc, thanks for watching I’m glad you saw some use from this video. If I am understanding you right, as long as you have the optional pitch and roll sensors on the machine it will keep the attachment set at your desired cross slope. Keep in mind this system does not reference or take into account any kind of elevation, if you want to account for that you have to add a laser system or the full 3D grade control system. I think as long as you know where you want the waterways it will work fine. It may take many passes to cut the material as the machine and attachment can only do so much at a time. Thanks again for watching.

    • @marcjudd3882
      @marcjudd3882 Před 2 lety +1

      @@ironman3406 ..... It's a fully decked out D3 machine....(has the big screen that shows the exact degrees of up/down and left/right that the machine is sitting--just like the screen you used in your video)--so I'd say it has the pitch and roll sensors built into the machine. So, you're saying it would keep the cross slope that I set automatically, right?? If so, that's great news! As you indicated....It won't adjust for elevation (I was kinda expecting that--I can manually control the elevation without a problem). Also...thanks for the tip on it's capabilities (YOU - It may take many passes to cut the material as the machine and attachment can only do so much at a time. )....based on this, I think I'll probably look at the GB120 (6 ft) rather that GB124 (8 ft), since my machine is a little smaller than yours (Don't want to overload it). Again Nathan, thank you so much for sharing your expertise!!!! PS...I'm a subscriber now 😃

    • @ironman3406
      @ironman3406  Před 2 lety +1

      @@marcjudd3882 The pitch and roll sensors are part of the options when you start pricing the attachment itself, I should clarify one thing.. there is a working range that the automatics function within, and if you get out side of that range the autos will kick out. I can’t remember the range but you know when it kicks out because the box won’t be lit up green around the target slope reading. For example say the working range is 8 inches from grade and you get 9 inches from grade the autos will kick off until you are back into that working range. I think you are wise considering the smaller model for your 259. Thanks for subscribing, most of my videos tend to revolve around my antique hobby, but every once in a while I toss in some new equipment stuff.

      @@ironman3406 Nathan, you've been a wealth of knowledge for me (so many things to consider! ) Now I THINK I understand. So when I order the machine, I'd probably want the optional IMU (Inertia measurement unit)?? .....without the IMU, the Cross Slope Control is STATIC?....i.e....it won't work to adjust the cross slope according to the changes in elevation.....have I got that right???? So, the IMU is the part on the right side of the screen that shows the degrees of pitch (left,right,up,down) of the machine.....if I don't get the IMU, these don't show on the screen (like yours did).....have I got that right???? Again...thanks for your wonderful help!!

    • @ironman3406
      @ironman3406  Před 2 lety +1

      @@marcjudd3882 you got it - without the body sensor on the machine you won’t see any of those data points that show the angle of the machine in relation to the attachment. The attachment will 100% work without it, but all the measuring will be on the blade sensor and you won’t have any information about the machine angles. I’d highly recommend the optional body sensor.

    How well do you think this attachment would work knocking down belly dump winrows building a road? Anybody have a video doing just that?

    • @ironman3406
      @ironman3406  Před rokem

      Thanks for watching / I’ve personally not seen anyone do it but I cannot see why it would be hard to do, you just have to remember this is not a full sized grader so it’s going to require smaller bites to knock down the piles left from a belly dump. One suggestion is that I’d ask the drivers to try and spread it thinner than normal so that you are able to move it easier. You seen in the video I knocked down that gravel pile, it really didn’t take that long. Moral of my response yes I think it could do it just might be slower than using a full sized grader. It’s a fantastic attachment! Hope this helps

    • @ironman3406
      @ironman3406  Před měsícem

      That would work if you wanted to creat a grade where both cylinders were lifting together like a flat grade - but if you want to grade a cross slope you have run it either left side or right side.
