  • Dr James Barry from Ireland was one of the most successful doctors in the world, yet he had to guard a secret throughout his life, or his career would have been ruined in an instant.
The story was so explosive that even the major writers of the day like Charles Dickens started to explore it. What could cause such interest?
Barry was a celebrated military surgeon who rubbed shoulders with some of leading figures of the 19th century.
He was a contradictory character. On the one hand he was a compassionate doctor who campaigned for improvements in public health. He didn’t drink alcohol and, unusually for the time, he was vegetarian. He carried out one of the first Caesarean operations in which the mother survived.
Yet he could also be irascible and often shouted at patients and staff alike. He had sufficient stature to rebuke the legendary Florence Nightingale when she didn’t do as he asked.
He was a tiny figure yet was aggressive and argumentative. He even fought a duel with a fellow officer. Thankfully, both survived.
Despite his fame he would largely be forgotten today if not that one, amazing secret. It was only revealed after he died in 1865...for James Barry had been born in Cork in Ireland as Margaret Bulkley...a woman.
So why did she choose to live as a man? How did she prevent her secret from being revealed? Could it be that she had a baby, even while living as a man?
The story of how Margaret chose to live as a man and become the world renowned surgeon Dr James Barry gives a fascinating insight into the attitudes and way of life in the 19th century.
