Most remember the 1999 X Games Skateboarding Best Trick contest for the Tony Hawk 900…but did Tony Hawk win that contest? Colin McKay had initially won the night, rifling off NBD’s left and right…
Shortly after, Tony stole the show. Leaving question marks as to who actually got rewarded the victory. Who got the gold medal? A few Skateboarding legends who competed that night, including Bob Burnquist, Bucky Lasek and Andy Macdonald chime in with their thoughts. You be the judge!

"He never put me in the game" is the realest response in here.
I think the "no one's done any of the tricks I did that night" slaps hella hard too 🤣
He was featured in Evolution Skateboarding and the Skate series though!
Nahh… it’s 4:13
I remember that night, we didn’t even like Vert, but were STOKED he landed it. Shit, we were stoked just catching X-Games/Skating on TV. …but Tony went wayyyy over time cause it was an epic trick att, Colin Won.
The grace of Colin to appreciate the moment and his role in the moment should be a mental medal onto itself. Way to be humble colin👊
I remember Colin being announced as the winner when the clock had run out. Then as we all know, Tony went on to do what he did. To me, I think they should be looked at as two different things -The Best Trick contest, and then, an epic moment in skateboarding/sports history with the first ever 900. As much as I love Tony, I think the X-Games wronged Colin by not giving him the hardware tho. The 900 was already the biggest thing that happened on the planet that day all by itself -it didn't need the medal to validate it. ...So Tony, when are you gonna give Colin his medal back lol
So well said
"To me, I think they should be looked at as two different things -The Best Trick contest, and then, an epic moment in skateboarding/sports history with the first ever 900."
Pretty much the best way that entire situation could have gone. And I think everyone involved would have been cool with it.
that's literally exactly how i've always viewed it. everybody knew Tony didn't land it in an actual competition, but nobody cared because it was the first fuckin 900
I think Tony should give Colin the medal. Years later it won’t mean as much to Tony - he’s got plenty let’s face it- but I reckon Colin would go home put that on his mantelpiece of shelf or whatever and smile. That’d be dope.
Colin is underrated as fuck.
🙌🙌🙌
really cant see Colin being underrated
He's not underrated, he's just so far beyond we can barely understand how hard his tricks are.
Colin was a beast!!
AND........he's not just a ramp guy. Dude rips on street as well
There’s a huge hole online for proper skateboarding content like this. It may take a little bit, but this channel is gonna explode.
On a side note, I do find it really strange that neither Colin or Danny Way were in the early THPS. Kinda surprised they weren’t in over Rune or Bucky. All these guys are legends though
Colin's tricks were so crazy, every trick he did that night is still insane to this day
The thing I like most about this video is that it brings Colin McKay back to the forefront of the skateboarding community. His style is one of those that should absolutely be examined. He very much was his own beast and his variations on cab tailslides and similar are a study in mastery and a great add to any skateboarder's mental repertoire.
Well said!
This is the kinda skate content we need! So good!!
Thank you!!
So hyped for this new channel and your new direction, Chase. There is a big gap left by Grosso’s passing on the history and the stories behind skateboarding. It would be awesome if you could keep that dream alive in your own way.
Thank you so much for the support!
I agree. 🍻🤙🏼🫡🏴☠️🫵🏽
Bob's Fakie 5-0/Kick flip to fakie that won him gold in Xgames 2000 Vert Best Trick is still the best one imo.
Colin and his positive attitude still to this day, a great guy!
Super nice guy, in the early 2000s his email was on a sponsor site, RDS I think, and he actually took the time to write me back
Colin won the “contest”. If Birdman has the medal he should give it to Colin, it’ll make a great video 😂
They should give Colin the best trick medal and engrave Tony's medal with "The VERY best trick."
Colin and Danny will always be the best with the sickest vert and street parts!!!
the 99' skaters were amazing. We gotta get that medal to Colin.
Agreed! And that includes the am's as well - we had a local pro back in the day named Jamie Smith - I was rewatching his videos the other day and they are still absolutely absurd. I think there's a reason Bob's '00 best trick remains unbeaten.
Dont show Mitchie Brusco this haha
We would spend hours watching Colins parts in the late 80s, early 90s because our town had a mini ramp and a few backyard ones, so we rode a lot of transition and we really looked up to him. One of the most progressive skaters of any era. By 99 I wasn't following the skate media so I never knew he won the best trick, I only knew about the 900. What a legend, I'm looking up the footage now.
Bob burnquist is forever 35 😂😂
Starting to watch skateboarding at this time, it did seem like the Tony Hawk Show, but rising tide raised all ships. Colin was overshadowed, but he doesn’t seem bitter because he sees the big picture.
I look forward to the other major moments in skateboarding that you'll feature.
Really well done so far.
Im pretty sure the official story is that Tony got 1st place. I remember thinking it was strange that he was able to win outside of the parameters of the rules. Im glad they are having this conversation.
Everyone won that day! Remember watching it live, best days ever! Cheers dudes 😎
Colin and Tony both show a lot of class in this. If memory serves there was some real beef after that, but both make this video super cool, because the past is the past. Nothing but love now :)
Glad you enjoyed it
“He never put me in the game” hahaha
Loving this channel! thank you CZcams algorithm getting it to me within a week or so, I had no idea you already created this and started making content. Super hype and great directions yo for real :)
Love this! Looking forward to seeing more!
Thank you!!
I always love Colin McKay since I was a kid.
Tony needs to give that medal to Colin or cut him a check. Something! Cmon.
History of skateboarding 🛹!! Ty Colin mckay and bird man,bob burnquist ,Bucky lasek,Rodney Mullen !!!!
🙌
Oh wow! Next needs to be a podcast with them both!
Damn I never knew this. I wish that they would've given Colin his medal, Tony made history and that is good enough in itself.
😍😍😍
I think the X Games should send Him a trophy for Best trick 99! Crazy I remember watching that contest live on tv .. man how time flies!!
what a sick video. amazing
🤝👏
Bob Burnquist also had one hell of a performance that night
True!
The 900 was the trick that stole the show. I remember because I recorded it onto vhs.
Tough from Colin’s PoV he won and should have the medal. However, The 900 did so much for skating - it helped propel Hawk and the games into the mainstream which played a huge part in the explosion of skateboarding that followed. The scene and all the companies, pros etc at that time all benefited from that exposure and interest. A whole generation of kids got into it because of Hawk/THPS/The 900 myself included.
Subbed, great video
“Nobody has done any of my tricks from that night”
Haha
Tony is so humble
Colin won, 900 was after time but historic
fire content
Thank you!!!
Stoked! Hell ya Chase!
🙌🙌🙌
I feel like this should be sad but everyone is happy about it and how it literally changed everything after this for skateboarding and my life
🤝
Awesome 👌👌
Give the man his medal.
Colin McKay was undoubtedly the winner. I remember it clear as day.
YES! Give Colin the medal TONY!
Man Colin is so humble!
I remember Colin's Back Tail Bigspin in as part of that contest. Remember it was in time but Tony's 900 was out of the time but it was special. Props to Colin. Colin should have won the medal but skateboarding won with Tony's 900.
Tony should definitely give the medal to Collin lol
I’m sorry for Colin, because he skated his ass off and did in fact win the contest under fair rules. I didn’t think they gave Tony the medal, because it was wayyy after time. Like Bucky said, one trick after time is no good. It was 100% an awesome and special moment, but it did unfortunately take this big win away from Colin, which he deserved.
❤
hot take: colins part in dc video >> tonys recent old guy part on thrasher.
colin street skated a vert ramp soooo
Lol
Being the real winner of the contest that Tony did the first 900 at is the biggest W in all of skateboarding 😭
Man Colin just seems like a great dude ! Pride of Canada
He really is
They even put Lil Wayne in the THPS game over Colin
They robbed Colin on paper but that 900 was the biggest night of skateboarding fa sure😂😂
I always thought they gave Colin the medal! Bummed for Colin that sucks, Tony didn’t need to get the medal for the 900 to be special
Tas Pappas would’ve done the 900 in time if they didn’t stop him from entering best trick
Colin should be in the next game or dlc for last game
The culture won that day. My 8 year old brain was blown when I watched this contest live on ESPN 2
These are the days when Xgames had rock climbing and big air for snow boards in the dead middle of the summer lol. Good fuckin times man smh.
I started skateboarding in 1972/1973 and never stopped. I have watched our sport come and go and considered not a sport at all. LOL i’ve seen all the skate parks, close, with every backyard ramp, some better than others. Somehow or another our sport continue to exist. Now it seems like it’s a given. We don’t have to fight for it to stick around anymore. It seems like it’s here to stay. how easily it was forgotten. It seems like there was very few of us that had a love for it that we just couldn’t let go of. it didn’t matter how good or bad the back yard ramp was, we were there. Repairing, rebuilding, it didn’t matter to us, as long as we had a place to skate. I think it’s good that generation next understands the love we had for Skateboarding. What we went through to keep it existence relevant in hopes that they will do the same. What you’re doing with this channel is without a doubt helping them recognize with this amazing useless wooden toy has to offer. I look forward to watching your channel grow. Thanks, much appreciated. 🤙🏼🍻🫡🏴☠️
Dude, those tricks Colin did.. Would win in a best trick contest now.. Kids are doing 900s even 1080s now and barely make podium spots.
Not saying the 900 isn’t sick. But I think Colin was way ahead of his time.
Damn that suuuuuuckssss
69th subscriber!!! Nice!!!
Haha lucky man!
do a grosso video on his birthday and how he basically did airs out of a beanplant (but just mainly about jeff)
Nyjah and Yuto in 30 years.
Shame on X Games for not giving Colin a medal. Even if Tony "won", not even a silver???
Best trick events don’t have silver and bronze, that’s only for the full run event.
@@PajamaPantsStudios Ah thanks for the clarification.
The tea ☕️
If you want to erase impossible from your vocabulary, start skating.
Colin and bob are the best ever imo
They all won😊
He didn’t put Colin in the game?
Tony definitely should have put him in the game. X Games as a whole should make a skating game and not rely on Tony hawk who could be biased
i wouldnt be surprised if tony actually threw away that trophy. i remeber him saying hes thrown away a bunch of the trophies hes won cause it kind of helps he strive to kee doing better or something like that.
Not even about the medal, it's the recognition he would've gotten as a champion.
Stolen by this moment
X-Games did Colin dirty. Tony is class though.
Damn Colin isnt aging too well from the young immaculate kid back in plan B questionable that looked like Danny ways brother
Colin took Street skating to a vert ramp, Tony took vert skating to the street.
one of these things worked.
tony aint take shit to the street
all i see is vert on vert
Best trick has no set format. Matt Dove won the '01 Xgames contest with his pop-shuv indy 720 after time.
Tas papas has entered the chat
So....Tony shows the skate he used to do the 900 but there's the video showing him tossing the skate to the public? Did he get it back?
Nah, when he landed it he was instantly surrounded by skaters so that tossing the board shot is from a different moment. Odd editing choice.
That is Colin tossing his board into the crowd not Tony.
Tony Mr. Special Privileges
Collin won best trick, Tony won the world
who catched that board tony used for the 900 when he threw it into the crowd
thats colin trowing the board
The least Tony could’ve done was put him in the video game…. Damn.
I’m so sorry dude
Did he just chuck a skateboard into a crowd?
Really solid content! Found you through LinkedIn first and then my YT algorithm caught on
Awesome thank you!
Hawk is so full of it
🛹🛹🛹
Is Bucky bitter? I thought the skit in The End was a bit…
Yeah I agree, sounded super bitter there. It does really suck cus Colin did win, but Tony’s accomplishment over shadowed the entire contest. But for Bucky to be like “it’s Tony he gets to win”, like automatically, is dumb to hear. We’ve heard how much trouble Tony had with judges for decades before this. While being technically right, the way Bucky said it made me not like someone I’ve respected for many many years. Just listen to Tony talk. Does he sound like mean spirited, competitive, jerk who’d steal your spotlight? We must be talking about different people.
Colin Won
Colin won.
Tony SHOULD give the medal to Colin. Colin did his tricks within the time limit, so he won. Tony needs to man up and give Colin the medal, asap.
skateboarding won that game is this what chase gabor up to? #yeah
If Tony was declared winner for the 900, that's all kinds of wrong, it was well outside the parameter of the competition. If that's the case I feel really sorry for Colin, sounds like he deserves the medal. Unless Tony actually one it for the previous trick he did. As epic as the 900 was, it shouldn't count for points in that event.
Tony had to steal the show . Nobody knows Colin won that’s messed up
