    I’ve finally got my hands on a new 2018 KTM 150sx and am starting to really get a feel for the bike. Now, I’ve actually spent quite a bit of time riding the bike in completely stock form and if you follow my CZcams videos you’ll see that the bike had some sputter, bog and roll on with the stock Mikuni TMX carb. I have dabbled with the jets that come with the bike as well as the needle position but never really got the bike running the way I envisioned. It actually made the bike a bit frustrating to ride and the power was disappointing at the time. This is why there was a call to Lectron in order to remedy the frustration I was having with my new KTM two stroke. Yes, I could have dedicated hours and days at the track, fine tuning the TMX carb so that it may possibly run better in specific environments but I would much rather be riding the bike then tinkering with it. Lectron said they could solve the issues I was experiencing with their 38mm High Velocity Carb that included the full kit for install. That means it came with the carburetor, XCW Airboot, Domino throttle housing and tube assembly and a slightly longer throttle cable. Let’s jump into the details!
    Since I’ve dabbled with carbs and two strokes quite a bit over the years I actually left the instructions on the workbench (usually a bad move) and started tearing down the bike. Since I’m definitely not familiar with the new KTM plastics and subframe, it took me awhile longer than it would have on a Japanese model bike to get the rear removed and the subframe pivoted up for easier access to the air boot. The air boot swap was required since the spacing is slightly different than the stock SX spacing for the Lectron fitment. Once the airboot was replaced, I was able to easily remove the stock Mikuni carb and swap out with the Lectron Carb unit. You want to install the intake boot side first and then drop the subframe back into place and seat the airboot side onto the carb. Definitely had to finesse the carb a bit for the intake side since it sits a ways further into the boot than you might think initially. Once the carb and subframe were back on I removed the fuel tank and just traced the throttle cable path with the new assembly to match the stock routing to the carb. All in all the install took about an hour and a half with no directions used. I would imagine being able to do this again in less than an hour if I kept up a good pace. The carb itself is very easy to swap and if you plan on testing back to back, I wouldn’t imagine it taking longer than 10-15 minutes if your bike doesn’t require an air boot swap.
    After 3 kicks the bike fired right up and let her warm up. The carb doesn’t like to start cold without the choke on, and I’ve learned that even if it’s warm out, turn the choke on upon first start of the day. After letting the bike warm up it was instantly noticeable that the snap upon roll on was drastically improved even noticeable while sitting in the garage on the stand. I realized that the roll on snap was improved but still had a very slight hesitation. Being that I’m at about 3,000 ft elevation here in Boise Idaho, I decided to lean out the metering rod just a ¼ turn as suggested to make that initial throttle hit more crisp. Took me about 2 minutes to pop off the top of the carb and with the metering rod adjustment tool Lectron provided I was able to adjust and start the bike again. Now the bike was in almost perfect running condition.
    Once I got the bike out on the track, I was absolutely blown away at how much more power the bike had in all areas of the powerband. I had much more initial roll on power that was transitioning in one smooth increase from bottom to a much improved mid hit and continued through a broadened overrev. The stock Mikuni may not have been jetted to its full potential but in retrospect, the Lectron is a bolt on mod that transformed my 150sx instantly! One thing I would change on the Lectron is where the choke is. The choke is currently setup on the right side of the carb which means I have to reach across and over the carb to turn it on for first kick. Not ideal but given that I only have to do this once per ride, I won’t let it get to me too much. I have about 10 rides on the carb to date on fairgrounds style tighter tracks, open motocross layout tracks and even some higher elevation 4,500 ft+ trail riding and in ALL these conditions the bike has remained consistent and strong. I have not made any additional tweaks or adjustments to the metering rod or idle since install and have been more than satisfied with its continued performance.
    Whether you have a new 2018 2 stroke or a classic Elsinore, I would feel confident in saying that you won’t regret spending the $500 or so on this bolt on gem from Lectron!

    On the TMX cab it comes stock with a #9 emulsion tube that's what your main jet screws into.
    You change it to a #7 And the low end bog is fixed. $12 part from Honda ,Yamaha and other deals
    It rips with the electron on it

    Lectron's an OK carb as long as one's on the pipe constantly, which is obviously that 2nd stage or 50% to WOT range. Then again, any carb can be easily tuned for WOT/rich. So for MX, yeh, ok....if for off-road/woods/enduro, the Keihin 38mm is the way to go. The problem with the newer KTM 150's (sx or w) is not really the carb/mikuni, it's the head insert design and power valve assembly. I've spent the past year testing all 3 carbs on both the 150w and 250w in many different conditions.

    What metering rod do you have and where do you have your power jet at? Have you had any issues of the bike running lean/hot when you are riding these bikes on the pipe alot? I've got a lectron on my 18 sx 125 and feel like my bike is running hotter then when I had my keihin on. I have a 5-1 metering rod and was 1.25 turns on the powerjet. I just ordered a 6-1 to see what happens and am going to try to tune the power jet from getting the bike to sputter and then backing it off.

    They just need to put the TPI on these bikes already.

    Did you ever experience fitment issues with the lectron on the 150? I also purchased the boot that helps with this from lectron, but still seems a bit tight and can visually see where the boot will touch the spring slightly. Also, I noted that the boot does not sit as it should in the airbox due to the lectron... just a tad however. I have been paranoid about this and wanted to see if anyone out there had experienced anything similar. Thanks - Clark in Atlanta

      Did you get the 300 boot (I believe it was that boot) that makes it work? Mine was a PAIN to get installed on the boot properly but after about 40 minutes we were able to finagle it in place properly and haven't had any issues on up to 120 hours

      @@ShelbyPaget So I ended up getting the boot recommended by Lectron on their site for the 150. I believe it is for one of the KTM woods bikes (150xcw?). It does work, but I still get the feeling its a tad too big. Ive done a few aggressive rides now w/no issues, but still bothers me that the fitment isnt perfect. I just threw a new pipe on w a shorty and it came alive. Love the bike as well. Keep up the vids, Ill be watching!

    Any reason for the domino throttle, did they just give you that as part of the test or did you explicitly ask for it?

    • @ShelbyPaget
      @ShelbyPaget  Před 6 lety

      It's what Lectron typically provides although I don't think it's necessary

      Shelby Paget did you feel that the throttle was any better because the $70+ price tag is high especially since I think the stock throttle works perfectly fine?

    • @ShelbyPaget
      @ShelbyPaget  Před 6 lety

      Not any better or worse but I believe it's to accommodate the longer throttle cable that is not identical to stock. I would check with Lectron to be sure :) I actually would probably prefer to just keep the stock housing if possible too

    Having nothing but problems with the stock carb on the 18 150. Saw this and heavily leaning towards a Lectern carb. In Spokane, WA and we are a tad lower elevation but Im stoked to get the bike running good.

      What needle do you have in your carb? #65, #72,#82?
      Where do you have your clip?

    HOT Carburetion: Is the new STIC system better than fuel injection? Yes! Dick and Jane like fast two strokes; they are really impressed with the Keihin with STIC insert. Jane says to Spot; WOW, see Dick [John] run; Dick [John] is very fast. See the STIC insert work; Dick [John] is very fast on his STIC equipped Keihin carburetor. Jane and Spot [Spot barks] are happy that John is wicked fast on his Husqvarna 300. Jane and Spot think John’s bike is on Steroids [STIC]. To see John go very fast click on this video below to see John accelerate; he is very happy and very fast on his STIC Rapid Transit System. Jane and Spot are happy that John is not on steroids; that it is a Keihin carburetor that is on STIC steroids. For details see the following video: Husqvarna 300:
