I can confirm this, recently switched from 5w40 to 5w30, and it needs suddenly topping up between oil changes. Also with wear spacing between metal surfaces increases, an oil which keeps it viscosity better at high temperatures will be better.

Liqui Moly is fantastic, expensive, only oil that lasts past 5000km with no oil burn and quality did not degrade. But use the correct specification: LL-01 for regions outside Europe.
I immediately experienced valve cover leaks using Liqui Moly 5w40 LL-04 in Canada.
What's the difference between LL-01 and LL-04, or even LL-98?
Only some manufacturers, the premium ones like Castrol, Motul, etc, bear those certifications.
N52 definitely only likes drinking the good stuff.

The other variable with this is using a cheaper fully synthetic 5w-40 oil such as Mannol and changing every 5-6,000 miles anyway. Much prefer this approach to some lease car pitched marketing gimmick tosh about oils lasting 15-20,000 miles and it looking like an oil tanker spill site when examining. That’s reportedly most of the problems with the timing chain engines that let go.

Thanks to your videos BMW Doctor I am learning a lot from them as I am now starting to DIY my 2008 BMW x5 3.0si. Part of that was looking for the exact same oil specs and certifications as BMW's 5W30 oil. I live here in Vancouver, Canada and I am unable to see any oil with the same oil with the ACEA, A3/B4, API SL, BMW LL-01 other than Castrol Edge SAE 0W30 Euro and the Pennzoil Platinum Euro SAE 5W/40. Then I saw this video which actually makes sense... and then I still wanted to make sure and that's when I checked my x5 owner's manual and to my surprise... it says "Approved oils belong to the SAE classifications 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40 and 5W-30". The online version of my user's manual only mentions the 5w-40 and the 5W-30 but on the manual I have, it says 4 different approved grades. I guess it's still best to check our owner's user manual to make sure... I am just surprised that the BMW dealership here was not even aware of this until I showed them my owner's manual. Now, I am changing my own oil tomorrow or this coming weekend and now, I don't have to worry about the high priced 1L bottle of oil from BMW. Happy learning everyone.

I usually change my oil in n52, but last time a mechanic did it - and he put in 0w30. It burns out like candle wax, and after 4 months and a valve cover change I had to fill it up with a whole liter of oil. Does it negatively impact engine longevity? I was wondering whether it is actually better for the engine during winter (around -5*C to 5*C) or should I go back to 5w40? I live in EU, it's hot only during the 2 months of summer ;)

It’s a one owner car. it’s always been serviced at BMW. he has all the service records and the car is spotless. It Has the M sports package. premium package. convenience package. cold weather package. The only thing Is it has 108,000 miles on it. Everyone is telling me to stay away from a BMW turbo charged car with over 100,000 miles on it. Is it really going to make that much difference if I buy a car with 80,000 miles on it. Or 70,000 miles on it. it’s 10 years old. That’s how it’s going to be buying a 10-year-old car. I know you can’t diagnose a car without seeing it but this car looks like it just came off the showroom floor. And it’s $13,000. It was $64,000 when he bought it new. Do you think I should stay away from it also. Thanks Dr. Dean 🏎

Why do you object to 0W-40? The zero would only be for cold starts and should therefore be less viscous than 5w oil. The 40 weight will apply pretty much as soon as the car comes to temp. I am all in on switching to 40 weight on used engines. I might agree even for new engines but I have no experience. I bet the 30 weight was recommended for gas mileage purposes rather than engine protection. But I am a cynic.

Absolutely agree. As an engine ages the 'gaps' between components, especially big bends and mains, get larger and thinner oil will not fill the gap completely. Also worn rings/ valve guides with thinner oil will cause more oil burn.
