    I want to say thank you! First time I've really a prepper talk about using solar and this to complement or extend that option, outside of charging batteries to run lanterns and such. I think a good option would be to run everything you can off solar and at night use lights like this to keep you power usage to a minimum during winter months. A lot of heating can be done with a wood burning stove, along with cooking, on top of using a mini split for both heating and cooling. While I'm not sure of the BTUs you spoke of, they would put put a decent amount of heat to help during the colder months.

    I just inherited 2 gorgeous Aladdin Oil lamps and in all my years of using oil lamps I'd never heard of these for some reason. Now I aim to find out all I can about them. The glass "shades" on these things are HUGE!! I need wicks, mantles and I assume Aladdin oil. I guess my first thing to do is find out how old these things are.. I don't think they're too terribly old...probably 90's... but off I go to check dates👍

    My wife just bought me an Aladdin Model C lamp. It is a gold color Lincoln Drape glass tank and brass upper assembly. It has the shade ring on it but there was no shade. It will need a new chimney and a ne wick as the old one in it appears to be well used and is missing some of the top layer that broke off due to its brittle state. I will also need a new shade as well. The lamp was dted in the mid 1950's to the mid 1970's and other than dust is on great shape. We found it in an antique store up here in Alaska for $80.00 but they sold it to us for $70.00. I figure it's well worth the cost to get the replacement parts and even with shipping will give us another great light and heat source for when our power goes out. It goes out quite often in our arctic winters due to ice and snow damaged trees and power lines. I've long wanted an Aladdin lamp as I think they are beautiful and well worth teh cost even when new. Now I have one. We have five other oil lamps we use every winter, and I'm looking forward to getting this unit back into use. Thank you very much for posting your video, it was well done and informative. The arctic winters can be long, dark, very cold and thsi lamp is going to be well appreciated; an heirloom we can pass on to our children and grandbabies.

      After you get your chimney and shade your lamp will be worth $250.00 to $300.00. So a very good purchase. You can find a good glass Shade on eBay find one around 30.00 and a chimney around $25.00. Try to find a chimney with the Aladdin logo they won’t break as easy as others. If it did not come with the shade holder you will have to get one also about $12.00. But all in all a very good purchase. Enjoy.

I am very pleased with this lamp and look forward to getting it up and running. • @TenSpeed2007
      @TenSpeed2007 Před 9 měsíci

      I don't own one yet. The wicks only job is to cause the mantel to heat up to 2000+ degrees F. That's what causes the mantel to glow like an incandescent light bulb, which can get up to 500 degrees F. Propane lanterns like Colemans do this as well. You have to have a pure heat source to do it, some pressurized and some not. I'm sure the actual BTU output is probably closer to 2500 to 5000 BTUs. That's still a hell of an output if your trying to keep a small room or two warm during a power outage. Couple these with a couple small portable heaters like a Mr. Buddy Flex and your looking at a pretty dynamic heating system if you don't have a fireplace or woodburning stove in your house/apartment.

    • @hasenourlv
      @hasenourlv  Před 2 lety

      All Aladdin’s do have mantles, but, yes you can burn any Aladdin without the mantle, but the mantle multiplies the light and is what gives you the equivalent of a 50 watt bulb. Majestic is also a very good lamp and with the mantle gives a lot of light

      I bought a few about 15 years ago......they did not have mantle but did have the round wicks. That was the hot ticket at the time.

  • @kimnielsenthewordyvikingett159

    Please include links for those distributors sweetie!!!!! Also aren't these the tubular wick style letting air up through the wick as well as the burner causing it to burn a bit brighter than the regular flat wick style?????

    • @hasenourlv
      @hasenourlv  Před rokem +1

      You can order lamps and supplies from Lehmans, the Amish store in Ohio, or buy them used on eBay listed under Aladdin lamps. Yes the tubular wick is a huge advancement over the old style singular wick. But it is the unique mantle that actually increases the light more so then the wick. The Aladdin 12 and those prior suck air from the bottom which are my favorite, but if they suddenly suck any additional air they can suddenly greatly enlarge the flame so they have to be watched closer than the newer models. But having an Aladdin oil lamp burning in your home gives an ambience you cannot get anywhere else. Ask any owner or collector. Thanks for watching. Larry and Vickie

      @kimnielsenthewordyvikingett159 Před rokem +2

      @@hasenourlv I don't know if this will help anyone but I've rejeted a flat wick style to increase the brightness and efficiency and it's definitely maby twice to three times brighter 🔆 than before having two of them hence knowing. And less smell also (using #2 regular size on mason jars) from Amazon along with 14"tall chimney. Which of course also helps creating more draft with each and every inch. If and when I find a taller chimney I'll most definitely pounce on that find!!! And if possible I suggest placing it in a mirrored corner of the room and not facing it since I prefer shadeless. And I happen to be using 7/8"width wicks. Hopefully I've helped at least one.

  • @donmiller2908

    I went to Lehmans site. These lamps are $200.00 dollars for the base and the glass chimney. $300.00 dollars if you include the glass lampshade.
    A plain Jane kerosene lamp at Walmart is $15.00 dollars. Will it put out as much light? No, it will not. Plus the Walmart lamp will smell slightly and smoke slightly.
    But for emergency lighting it'll do. Unless you plan on living off the grid or wish to join an Amish community, the Aladdin is just way too expensive for what you're getting.

      Yes, The Aladdin can be very expensive retail, but I have bought the parts on eBay and have put one together for less than $60.00. You would be amazed how much more light it puts out for reading, or when it comes to performing tasks that require light then a regular oil lamp.

    • @PandorasFolly
      @PandorasFolly Před 2 lety

      @@donmiller2908 one thing you can also look at is incandescent lantern mantles. Due to the efficiency and high temp clean burning nature of the round wick lanterns you can get incandescent mantles for them. They are just a larger version of the ones from camping lanterns.
      Though if you do go with the incandescent mantle you may have to go with an extra tall flue which makes it kind of hard to move around. But if you are just using it as emergency lighting it is VERY worth it as it burns incredibly cleanly with no soot and looks like a 60 watt light bulb.
