That was actually the intent, to make him look as cool as possible. And boy, did they succeed.
Of course, Sonic kinda lost his edge after 06, leading to a kinda softer look. Which still looks good! But it doesn't have that cool factor of the Adventure Era, namely the artwork.
There's exceptions, like Smash 4 and Ultimate, but asides from those... Yeah.

I've never said Thank you for uploading this, I've heard an instrumental version somewhere, but not a high quality official one like this. I’m not entirely sure, but I believe there was like a music player or something that you could plug in and listen to songs you put on it.
Edit: Yup, at least one such accessory was the ‘Innovation MP3 Media Photo Music Player’. Which as the name suggests, evidently turned the GBA into a makeshift MP3 player. I’m almost certain there were other methods out there at the time, but regardless, using the GBA as a portable media player was definitely a thing one could do.

Does anyone have access to or know of an instrumental of this song, but specially the version from The Best of Crush 40, with the thundering at the beginning? I've looked for it everywhere and at this point am not very hopeful of getting an answer, but it's worth a shot I suppose.
I think the only differences between the two versions are the beginnings and ends, so an instrumental of the newer version should be as simple as pasting its intro and end onto where it would be on the original's instrumental (this track). I'm just both too lazy and inexperienced with audio editing to do it though haha.
