And finally he snapped and couldn't take it and told them to be quiet and that's when they started heckling him.. Most people knew this maybe they would have had a little bit more compassion for this guy snapping out.

I saw this Curb episode multiple times in the past and this hat story and scene was funny enough to me anyway. In a way, I think was healing for a LOT of people. Richards himself, but also a lot of people were heartbroken about what he did, for years. For him to be eccentric on the show again, and to make fun of what happened over 10 years later, is very healing. It puts his deep remorse into perspective.
The way that Larry speaks without any context whatsoever is one of the golden rules of comedy. Like how in the fuck do you just nonchalantly say something about "you got a rash from a little girl's pussy" and not realize absolutely everything isn't going to be understood by everyone you come across? Something like that wouldn't work if it came out of nowhere, but considering we, as an audience are aware of what was actually going on beforehand, it's just so much funnier and works perfectly.
