I believe what you're saying is true about "soul ties." It's too late for me to back away from my mother now, because she's dead, but I NEEDED TO, as she had become demon possessed following her use of the Ouija board when I was 11, and demons don't LEAVE, they DECEIVE.
She morphed into a monster after that, and literally tried to kill me several times (once when I was 16 I awoke to find a man in my room with a knife, and my dog, which was sleeping at the end of my bed, saved my life. From the things he said, it is obvious to me now that she had hired him).
However, I was deceived, because although I left the state for more than a decade, I thought she repented, as her behavior totally changed, and when I got back home, I resumed my relationship with her. But she did subtle things to harm me the rest of her life, and really TERRIBLE things happened to me when I had resumed my relationship with her.
I have a horror story to tell of the cross I gave her when I was baptized when I was 19 as well. She had come to my baptism (although she left when she found out she'd have to sit through a sermon). I gave her a cross on that day, and she put it on -- THEN I never saw that cross again. Close to her death 30 years later, she finally told me what happened to that cross. She said she was sleeping in the daytime, and awoke hearing a windstorm in the house.
She said she then felt a "pop" in her breastbone, and over in the corner of the room sat a frog with red eyes, and it glared at her. I was STUNNED, because I remembered the demons that looked like frogs in Rev. 16, which came out of the antichrist and false prophet.
She said when she looked at the pillow, the cross was on the pillow -- but the chain was still linked together!!! Demon possession is REAL, and unholy "soul ties" are an open door to Satan along with involvement in the occult. Those doors need to be shut, which is why Jesus said we can't be His disicple unless we "hate" our mother, son, daughter. He meant nothing and no one should come before HIM, and in MY case, I needed to say goodbye to my mother.

At the Catholic Church I attend the Priest gave us a book called Unbound. I also participated in a session where I was unbound from all my sins, demons and soulties. I was released from oppressive demons from that day on. Now that I'm aware of these demons I am much more conscious of my weaknesses, where I go and what I expose myself to.

Usually, it only takes one time of firm faith praying with curses, but soul-ties may need more until the effects go away.

I thought your own "personal" (soul) Spirit is what resides in you and it is influenced by other spirits.. To have demon or "unclean" spirits in you would be a form of possession. and if you don't have the holy spirit in you, could you have just your own? or is it automatically an "unclean" spirit if it's not the holy spirit? In that logic then either you have the holy spirit or you are technically possessed by a spirit to some degree or another.
