That doesn't actually happen, planes have their own radars and can tell when they're on a collision course, the pilot would have to be really distracted and even then modern plane systems detect and alert possible collisions.

I may agree with you on swagger but as a controller and a pilot, I absolutely want my controllers to work with an air of confidence in their voice. A timid controller is less than efficient and an often more dangerous controller.

I absolutely hate the "gambling" atmosphere they depict in the controller's room. dude should've been removed immediately and investigated after the FIRST near collision. cutting it even that close is a total failure. "I saw it clearly in my head" won't be a good defense.
I hate to break it to you, but all of us controllers work daily on the basis of “anticipated separation.” It’s taught that way for the “safe and EXPEDITIOUS flow of traffic.” Sometimes it doesn’t work, and you obviously fix it in the moment before it becomes an event.
But yes, by the book there was more than one separation error in this clip
Yeah... I haven't seen the movie but based on this video that's the most "Hollywood" part of all. Air traffic controllers have all sorts of rules and procedures and training to keep things safe... it's not a game to see who can get away with spacing aircraft the closest. It really paints a bad and misleading picture of ATC to the public.
@@MorphMixologyReptiles ... Yes, but that "anticipated separation" needs to meet certain objective minimum separation requirements. "I anticipate that they will miss by just a bit" doesn't qualify.
ya the "I knew it was going to workout" excuse doesn't seem to fly very far, clearly the pilots in the 80s ruined it for us... thanks guys!
Kelsey should have pointed out that that EVERY aircraft going into ATL is on an IFR flight plan....and, unless and until a flight has called the "airport, or field in sight" ATC is totally responsible for separation of ALL aircraft under their control...If an aircraft reports the "field in sight" that aircraft can now be cleared for a "visual" approach and can maneuver to land. Even if you do not have the "airport in sight" you can still be cleared for a visual approach if you have another aircraft in sight that has already been cleared for a visual approach..... approach will point out traffic you are following in sequence.....if you call that traffic in sight...approach can tell you " follow traffic, maintain separation, cleared for visual approach. My WHOLE point for this diatribe was the controller saying "maintain separation"...this is said to tell you that they (ATC) are no longer responsible for your separation with the traffic you're following. This ability is important at high usage airports as the minimum separation for aircraft on a visual approach is far less than that required when the weather is crappy...and so the airport is far more efficient. It's movies like this that got me banned from family movie night if an aircraft were involved in the movie...lol

Also some controllers are like Doctor Strange and can see future timelines.
Also some controllers will avoid sending a plane around to avoid paying $10, and the cute girl is watching.
In that case, even with that idiot on ATC the landing plane would have just said something like "Stellar 841 going around" after noticing the departing plane rolling on the intersecting runway.
But with a sane and realistic person on ATC, the whole situation wouldn't exist, if they gave a landing clearance for one plane they won't let another one begin rolling on the intersecting runway until it's clear, and unless the airport is super busy runway 31L wouldn't even be in use at all. There's a crazy amount of traffic a competent ATC can pack into just two parallel runways, and with JFK having two parallel pairs they'd just pick a direction that works best with the wind at the time and have everyone land and take off at the same heading.
"Clear to land" never means "You must land." I would hope a pilot "Cleared to land" watching another aircraft coming down an intersecting runway would perform the "Go Around" even if the tower kept saying "You're cleared to land." This depicts pilots as stupid and helpless, and while there is the occasional inept pilot out there, it is beyond my comprehension that there would be a pilot so stupid as to see that situation developing and not abort the landing. Ditto with the departing aircraft...there isn't a pilot out there who would not be on the reversers before trying to "punch it." Dumb, dumb, dumb movie.
My thoughts exactly. Way too close for comfort.
The whole movie is a great epic failure causing shame and irritation
True. Contrary to popular belief, the pilot in command has the ultimate responsibility of maintaining separation from other aircrafts not the ATC. The PIC can contradict ATC clearances if he/she deems it to be unsafe. He/She may have a lengthy paper work to do after the flight, but it’s better than putting everyone in danger.

Not just Hollywood. The press are experts at this lol 😆 Good old journalists.
Saw a TV show where a 737-NG (probably 700 or 900) lands and then they showed what was supposed to be the same plane and it magically became a 737-200 and I was really confused, until they blew up the plane.
"For years, Hollywood has gotten authenticity wrong in movies." - Fixed it for you. ;)
I saw that happen a few times
Yeah, saw one movie, can't remember what it was, where the boarded a 747, taxied out in an A330-777 (yes, it changed between the two a couple of times), then I think lined up in an A340, but with a 2-engine throttle in what was probably a 737...
After that near miss, the pilots will tell ATC to call the FAA.
"Uh, Tower, I have a number for you to call."
Dear Kelsey,
great video! A small point of nitpicking though, at 05:50 you explain what a pilot could say when he thinks the controller forgot to issue the take off clearance and you say the phrase "boeing123 on runway 4L, ready for take off". It should be ".... ready for DEPARTURE", regardless of whether you're on the runway or taxiway, since following the 747 crash in tenerife the word "take off" is to only ever be used when actual take off clearances are issued, read back or cancelled to avoid any potential confusion, in any other situation it should be "departure". Best regards and thanks for the video!
I have been watching your videos for a couple of weeks now because I am fascinated by aviation and the process pilots go thru during an entire flight. It's amazing the amount of knowledge you must amas to become a competent pilot.
5:50 Minor correction: it's "ready for departure" (or just "ready"), not "ready for takeoff". At least over here in Europe proper phraseology does not allow using the word "takeoff" except for the "cleared for takeoff" instruction, to avoid any confusion. So "departure" would be used when reminding ATC. Apart from that: spot on. 👍😀
Yeah. I think that's the standard they set (or rather, enforce) after the Tenerife crash.
Here is the States there isn’t a published verbatim phraseology for pilots when announcing they’re ready. There’s “best practice” but nothing in stone. As for us controllers, “departure” is a sector, not an action. So you’re correct “cleared for takeoff” is the phraseology and we would have them “contact departure.” Hope that clears it up.
I agree, isn't it always "departure" until you're on the runway and ready to go, then and only then its "clear for takeoff" ???
"Ready for take-off" is regularly used by pilots in the States and Canada.
"Ready for departure" actually sounds like "ready to switch to Departure frequency" to the American ear.
@@nevillec5252 Once you learn from "Los Rodeos" disaster, you will never ever say anymore "ready for take-off". It happened 40 years ago on the island next to where I work.
"Ok we are going to land, put the throttle to the toga position so in case of a go-around, we don't need to touch our throttle".- hollywocaptain
The editing even implied that moving the throttles is what lowered the gear. I think it was more like "Hey we don't have an inset shot of gear down" "Just use one of the 5 takes we did of someone "punching it", audiences are idiots amirite"
That struck me right away when I saw it. I thought "Welp, they're all dead".
Well, "punch it" would be applicable to one class of passenger aircraft.
Although all would be wondering how and why a long retired Concorde was being directed to afterburners.
🤣🤣
LMAO that's a POWERFUL landing
I love your (can I assume it's subconscious) side to side head movement when you see something completely ridiculous . . . .
Loved the "punch it" line.. Almost saw Don shift gears Fast And Furious style 🤣🤣🤣
Hollywood: “ATC guy is allowed to gamble with people’s lives but it’s O.K because he’s a hotshot maverick controller with attitude and very good looking.” Yup… they nailed it lol
he's not Russell Bell (Pushing Tin) can't be that much of a maverick, now punch it
I think that even "Pushing Tin" is more realistic than this.
Pushing Tin is such a great movie...one of my favorites. I can't wait for Kelsey to do that one!
yes, kennedy steve said the atc scenes were pretty accurate as far as the rushed, focused environment. such a good movie too
I think so too, I don't remember it selling well, but I enjoyed it.
I think rescuers down under may be more realistic.
L.A. to Vegas is more realistic than this, not much more, still more
Wow, you do have such an intense look about you when you are studying (watching/listening) something. You are one intense fellow.
I love that while he's reacting he will nod or shake his head
When I heard, "punch it", I expected to see a shot of Dom and Brian flying the plane 😂
I heard chewbacca saying ARRRRRRRRRHHHH!
"Chewie, punch it!"
Chewie, you're cleared to land on Charlie, caution the 737 holding short of 20L
Thanks for pointing out the Hollywood blunders of this movie. Great job Kelsey! My son turned me on to your channel, I love it! ❤
Great video! Also, this intro combo (video and music) is my favorite!! I actually look forward to it each video and the "let's get into it" lol. Good combo! 👍
I thought pilots never say "ready for takeoff", rather "ready for departure" to avoid confusion?
correct
Not how I've understood it. In the investigation of the Tenerife crash in 1977, it was noted that when the controller gave the KLM crew their ATC clearance, he said something like 'after takeoff, fly to the PAPA beacon...' or something to that effect, which may have contributed to that captain believing he was cleared for takeoff. It was decided that the word "takeoff" should only be used when the plane is actually ready or cleared to do so. When I fly (Cessnas, not 747s), I use 'departure' first (ie, "Request taxi to the active runway for a north departure to 3000 feet"), but when I'm holding short of the runway and ready to go, I will report "Ready for takeoff" on the grounds that I'm now set to do so. There's nothing confusing or ambiguous about telling a controller you are ready for takeoff - it is then their prerogative to give you takeoff clearance or not.
@@stephenp448 Don't know where you are. I haven't flown for a while, but here in Australia the call is "XYZ Ready, 26l"
@@jjaus Canada here. I've used 'ready for takeoff' since the first time I flew out of a controlled airport. No instructors or flight examiners have told me to do otherwise!
@@stephenp448 Interesting the difference. I follow US Premier1driver and Citation Max on YT and they definitely say departure.
Wow! That landing was so terrifying that the aircraft turned from an A330 CEO to a B777. 15:38 😂 HAHAHAHA. @74gear
A330s don’t have double slotted fowler inboard flaps. Also, there should be a hole at the back for the APU exhaust
Man, that poor bastard plane was never the same again 😂
Yes I saw that, made a comment before I saw yours
@@drewsmith3973 The engines also upgraded themselves to GE90s from Trents. It evolved like a pokémon :)
I saw the clip from this and instantly wanted to recommend it so I looked it up and your video was second on the list 😂
Thank you for posting this! I am watching this movie and came directly here to see if you had made a video about it! :D
I think this movie loves the A330. So many of them are there.
Yeah, aircraft models are expensive, they cost a whole 70 bucks getting them for MFS, a movie couldn't possibly afford more than one
One thing I cought: Asking tower "Boeing 123, ready for takeoff" is an example of bad phraseology. The word takeoff should only be used with takeoff clearance and the readback. Otherwise use "ready for departure". This makes clear that you are ready, but not in the process of takeoff yet. It also helps to make the keyword takeoff more recognisable to catch for others and raises situational awareness. So that when they hear takeoff, they know it is a clearance or a plane taking off. Nothing else.
For example if you are about to cross the runway and hear takeoff on the radio, you may be alarmed that there is a takeoff crossing your path and can clear the situation befor entering the runway or the other guy getting too much speed.
That is right and the rule got introduced after the Teneriffe Air Disaster where to planes collided on a runway
@@pedramPN I know. Thanks to point it out for all the others who might not know.
I was going to make the same comment - thanks!
Agree. You are absolutely right. I was surprised that Kelsey would use that phraseology. It's a no no.
Very true, but, it is not a huge Nono to say “ready for takeoff”, and you could get away with that anywhere pretty much all the time.
Still incorrect phraseology though👍
Seen multiple of your videos in a row now & I can say it's very interesting & informative content. Keep doing what your doing! You really did "Punch It !".
¨Punch it!¨ LOL. What a scene! I was expecting Superman to show up flying and save the day.
You know, when I watched this movie, I literally thought "74 Gear would have a lot to say about this" in almost every plane scene. lolol
I would have walked out.
Ironically, the departure frequency that was given to Qantas was actually the tower frequency. In an earlier clip, you hear the tower frequency as 123.9 and the departure frequency as 135.0 (even though it should really be 135.9), and then later on, Qantas gets a departure frequency of 123.9.
I remembered the tower frequency after so many years of listening to kennedy steve
I heard them without the leading number one, which puts them way out of the air band
@@w8kdzradio113 At least in the United States, it isn't unheard of to omit the leading one, given that that part of the frequency is never going to change.
U made me feel safer & at ease now..& my first flight ever in my 45 years was from Austin to Vegas & i and was terrified ...but u sound so calm & sweet..thank u ..i will b flying agin this New years agin to Vegas ..
I have mad respect for people like this guy.. Pilots are amazing.
Come on Kelsey, everyone knows when you " Punch It " you release NOS from the very special tanks on every airliner to give you that extra kick.. Unless your engines are running a little hot. LOL.
Jack Sroka, those new planes have a big HEMI also
@@jasoncentore1830 LOL.
Yeah Jack, this Kelsey guy is such a noob!
@@iamgroot4080 He is a great guy, but he's got a few things to learn yet. LOL.
ya but then the manual says you are obligated to transmit "Lets kick some tires and light some fires" followed by a long yeehaw on rotation
They use a China Southern aircraft, but CA is the IATA code for Air China. China Southern is CZ.
ya and they messed up Qantas too
:b
@@74gear Well, to be honest, is there anything they DIDN'T mess up? O.O
In reality, how any of those people would be allowed to keep their jobs after such a close call like that is beyond me. I know it's a movie, but in reality, the pilots of both airplanes, the ATC, and his supervisor would be looking at suspensions, firings, and/or a congressional hearing depending on which UN dignitary was in one of those planes.
dude was suspended
also with making bets on the planes, make a bet on whether my plane is gonna crash, and i find out, you Mr. or Mrs. ATC controller are getting beat down
15:20
Man i can't stop laughing when i saw Kelsey's face 😆😆😆😆
Kelsey: " Hollywood, You suck... Let me show you how aviation is done"...
Getcha some, Kelsey..😂🍻🍻
well their job is to make it as entertaining as possible, just think you could accomplish that and make it close to factual at the same time right?
@@74gear Absolutely.. That's why they need The man, the myth, the Legend Himself: Kelsey...
@@74gear well Kelsey they have to give up one for the other, they can't ever find any middle ground, I know we watch movies for entertainment, but it should be a mentality of they can entertain while being factual, not do things that defy the laws of physics and aviation, that's just too many liberties
@@raysplace6548 agreed, I find Kelsey's videos are 100% factual and 100% entertaining, if he can do it, so can Hollywood, like come on it's not that hard, if a CZcams pilot can do it, just kidding Kelsey but seriously, keep up the awesome work
Your face said it all when the pilot set thrust to “TOGA” but the gear went down 😂
I literally couldnt stop laughing at his face there and how stupid it was 😂
Love Kelsey wearing the headset and Aviator sunglasses
Kelsey, you missed the most Hollywood part of all: an ATC controller constantly mugging for the camera like they’re Derek Zoolander and trying hard to look “ultra-cool” every second. 😂😂😂
I think Hollywood people still haven’t heard something called “google” lol
Kelsey, I love your content, but I've got to clear up a misconception about supervisors in ATC overriding controllers. That just doesn't happen except in very, very rare cases. You're not the only pilot that holds that view. It seems to be very common. Supervisors are just there monitoring the operation. They may offer general guidance or help a controller who needs it, but they would not directly override what the controller does. The majority of the time if you hear someone override a controller, it's because there is training in progress. The overriding controller is actually the instructor overriding the trainee. The way the ATC radio equipment works, the instructor jack has priority over the trainee jack, so if the instructor keys up, their transmission goes out, not the trainee's. Any other time if you hear another controller speaking, it's just a routine controller swap.
this guy cleared up half my questions in under 20 minutes and is capable of more than the holly wood movies amazing
If this is how chaotic a normal Hollywood airport is I wonder how much worse an aircraft carrier would be. Considering you have FAR less space. 😂🤔 Great video! 💯
Imagine being inside the airplane hearing the tower on your takeoff saying "Punch it!"... He could be like "YOLO!"
