I get the impression he’s done this a few times before. Takes me 3-5 tries to get around the hoods right. He does it in one go and doesn’t even look back.
It takes me about an hour and a half to tape my bars and it still looks rubbish. That Tinkoff guy couldn't just drop in to my garage for five minutes, could he?

According to Calvin Jones at Park Tools, the wrap on the RH side should be wrapped in a clockwise direction from riders point of view, and counter clockwise on LH side. The Park tools video gives step by step instruction.
I don't think Calvin Jones wraps 10 bikes a day. This is how a PRO mechanic wraps the bar tape for a PRO rider, just stick to the proper tried and true method.
@@poxcr I’ve wrapped mine in both directions and they both work, and look great. The figure of eight isn’t necessary when wrapping like the pros, so probably the preferred method for getting the wrap done quickly.
Yeah on the drops it should be wound the other way as tendency is to pull-down and outside on the drops, which will gradually loosen the wraps 😳, but then if he’s changing the tape on a regular basis it prob doesn’t matter that much.
Really doesn't matter if you wrap inside out or vice-versa: It's a pro bike. With that base wrap, the top layer is going nowhere anytime soon, and it will probably be re-wrapped before the next race.
PROcrastiDRIVE SV fizik tape is garbage, It wraps like shit. Bar tape is one time use, who gives a shit if it rips when you take off. SUPACAZ makes good tape. Not the best but better than fizik. Good cushion, decent stretch and doesn't stay wet like fizik.
lol, I have had literally none of the issues you are talking about with Fizik bar tape. Which specific type are you using? I'm talking about "Fizik superlight classic" bar tape. Also, there are plenty of times where reusing bartape is acceptable. Like when you're just swapping bars or correcting a mistake when you initially wrap the stuff. It helps when it just peels off rather than tear off in chunks :) Never heard of SUPACAZ before... where do you buy it online?
+PROcrastiDRIVE SV Peter Sagan uses supacaz. For the record the wrap issues I mentioned were my own fault lol. I had 3 sets of this tape and ran it for a while. It's more of a smooth sticky feel. I personally prefer textured wraps. I'm running cadence right now. It's Simliar to most fizik wrap I see. They're all good wraps. Just personal preference.
Except he didn't. I mean there's different philosophies, and ultimately its up to the rider, but generally when you come out of the figure 8, the tape is suppose to be wrapping in the direction of the front wheel not back to the saddle. But there's two things to consider....rider preference, and the fact that this tape doesn't even get close to being worn out or stretched before it's replaced.
It's a Supacaz bar tape. I have one (teal) wrapped on My Salsa WarBird handlebar. It's quite attractive (if a bit overpriced), but not as much as some (I prefer Fabric and Lizard Skin). Also, it's extremely fragile: My sticky (a result of washing) gloves peeled of the surface layer in absolutely no time. I do, however, like the look of the metallic purple Supacaz headset cap I have on two of My bikes.
Bicycle sunday I had them in 3,2mm and they couldn't be tightened via allen key (I also lost one end plug in like a week, very poor quality), plus they were NOT COMFORTABLE compared to the originals once I had on Specialized Tarmac Compact... they felt like plastic... rain weather also bad... too expensive... they are HYPED as hell, don't understand the positive reviews
That's expertly done - chapeau! Although I always thought you should wrap from the inside outwards? In other words the opposite way to the way he's just done it?
Andrew Pike Indeed, so that holding the handlebars would actually tend to tighten the tape. Maybe this tape is so good that you don't even need to pay attention to that detail.
wiwh I doubt it's the tape. They probably just wrap it so often with fresh tape that there is no need to worry about the long term wear and tear of it.
The guy at park tool said to wrap the drops in the direction of the force that the wrists tend to rotate, right side clock wise left side counter clock wise when facing in the direction of the front wheel. does Peter Sagan tend to rotate his wrist inwards on the drops?
another pro mechanic that wraps to the inside of the bars, ( several video's on here that do that ). Your hands twist to the outside when in the drops and to the front wheel when the hands are on top. To wrap any other way you are going against the grain so to speak, more of a chance of unraveling. With the modern quality sticky tapes if you do a good tight wrap you probably are not going to unravel no matter which way you go, but correct is correct.
The theory here, especially on a sprinter's bike, is that he's actually pulling on the bars when in the drops. I prefer to wrap this way and I never see my tape or any of my customers' tape come unraveled.
Cody: Yes you may be pulling on the bars when sprinting or out of the saddle but your fingers are still wrapped around the bars from the outside going around to the inside. When you pull or apply pressure your elbows are out and your fingers are tightening to the inside. At least mine seem to be doing this but i admit i'm no expert, as i said if you do a good tight wrap either way it probably will never come unwrapped.
Another reason I wrap this way is that I could never get it just right at the lever clamp when wrapping outside-->in. I'd end up with a lot of bulk at the clamp or have to resort to using the cheater strips. At the end of the day as long as it looks good and stays put, everyone's happy. Cheers.
That is a common misperception in the proper way to wrap bar tape, this video is done correctly. The issue is do you want the tape to tighten or loosen in high stress situations. If you are just riding casually on the drops or the tops of the bar then you are correct that you would be twisting the tape looser not tighter but you are not doing so with enough force to unwrap the tape. However when sprinting hard in the drops you are rocking and pulling the bike side to side and will actually be tightening the tape and same for hard climbing efforts most riders are not leaning on the tops but pulling on the tops again twisting the tape tighter.
A regular mortal will start twisting his hands to the outside when riding on the drops, whereas a pro really twists inside in those hard push moments. Thinking you are a mortal, clockwise on the right side is perfect for you. And for me. :)
Intrigued why he starts at the plug end and finishes on the top. The factory applied tape on my bars goes from the top, self-trapping itself (no electrical tape required) and runs to the bar end plugs where the plugs retain the end.
Because then the leading edge would be on the side closest to you, all the way down the bar. This means that your natural grip will cause the edges to curl up. Fine if you don't ride a lot or you replace it every few months.
That tape is specially made! That’s not what you get in stores. The adhesive is thicker and the tape design is different too. It also seems longer as well. I wish I could buy THIS tape
do you realize that you CAN buy the exact same tape right??? you can get it ordered by any bike shop. heck you can even get it directly from the manufacturer online.
I can't understand people who choose cylindrical cross-section handlebars to ergonomic, aero flat profile ones. The only advantage of the former is that it can accommodate more accessories like mounts, brackets, lights. The latter is much more comfortable, is more aerodynamic and looks better.
@@matteocristini6221 I beg to differ. While carbon ergonomic handlebars are ridiculously expensive, so are carbon cylindrical cross-section ones. Alloy ergonomic handlebars cost about the same as their round cross-section counterparts - €40-70 - not cheap, but somewhat affordable. Check out the Vision TriMax alloy ergo handlebars. Or Pros. The technique he uses only works with symmetrical bar tape. Any asymmetric tape appears different on upper bar and drop when wrapped like this.
