I Really Underpriced These

- Here's how I made 100 beer flight boxes for Cartridge Brewing! These are solid walnut and feature rabbet joinery reinforced with once fired 9mm casings, branded leather badges that are brass tacked on, and a chalkboard to label the libations that Catridge Brewing will serve in the boxes! I mean, how could I make beer flight boxes for a brew pub called Catridge Brewing that's going in an old ammunition factory and NOT use brass casings in it somewhere? If you're in the Cincinnati area or just love great beer, be sure to follow / cartridgebrewing or cartridgebrewing.com to visit them as soon as they open in 2020!

#woodworking #woodwork #beerflight - Jak na to + styl
BEER FLIGHT: if you don't know what one is, you're in good company because this has come up a lot. Basically, it's a sampler. Generally four 4oz glasses. Why called a flight? Well, it started wine flights which are the same thing.. a sample of wines, but more specifically a grouping of similar wines. Again, why flight? Well, apparently an archaic definition of flight is something like "grouping of similar things." If you have a better answer, or just a comical ones.. reply. This is just what I found from googling a frequent comment.
A Beer Geek's Guide to Beer Flights :: Kegerator.com
NOT COMICAL,I KNOW.
BUT I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY I LOOKED THAT UP OR SHARED IT...😕
WAAY TOO MUCH TECHNOLOGY THESE DAYS. ENJOY YOUR "FLIGHT"..
I love the fired shells in there instead of dowels. These are really cool! Way to put a focus on safety with all the redundant cuts!
Thanks! It’s counter intuitive, but the “safe” tasks can be more dangerous than sketchy stuff (assuming you know the difference) because of the complacency that can set in. Not that I’m saying sketchy maneuvers are safe.
"Make sure to take breaks to clean your hose to avoid performance issues"... my doc said the same thing! But my wife forbids me to do so...
That's just wrong, .. hilarious but wrong.
I don’t recommend hiring out help or otherwise outsourcing, maybe just take matters into your own hands.
My wife is a urologist. I checked. She agrees.
@@boneman1868 Don't know what more proof one could need.
I scrolled down looking for pretty much this comment :)
Really impressive how you broke down every process into repeatable and precise steps. Great stuff.
Thanks! Only way to do bulk work. Can get away with one offs.. but any repetition and quick jigs are worth the effort.
So... I'm minding my own business this Saturday morning, having a cup of coffee, and hanging out with the kiddos before I disappear into the shop for the remaining waking hours of the day. My mission today: start a project of making 125 flight boards for a whiskey event. I'd spent the previous evening planning, double checking material, and working up a couple of different prototypes. The Standard Operating Procedure for my projects is disproportionately front loading with confidence and then quickly melting into second guessing and mumbling obscenities. I was following that same SOP this morning, when the CZcams Gods smote me by putting this video as the recommended pairing for my morning Joe. Aaaaaaaaand... Now I wish I was doing THIS instead of my planned build. Short-story-long: thanks for nothing, pal!
Great build. Helpful tips, nice skills, and funny. I haven't come across your videos before, but I am a subscriber now. I am looking forward to watching more of your builds as much as I WAS looking forward to starting my own build before I saw this.
Cheers!
This is one of the best comments I’ve had in a while, thanks so much for watching and commenting! Best of luck on your whiskey flights today.
Andrew Griffith
Omg man that’s funny!!
That's a hall of a process. Definitely going to use your drill press jig idea.
Go for it! Jigs are so handy. And with CA glue and scraps can be super quick.
You earned my subscription because you just made the repetition of making 100 boxes interesting.
I’ll take it! Thanks!
I can’t wait to visit the brewery! The flight boxes look amazing...also, you’re welcome for the 50ish brass tacks I hammered in from the comfort of the couch and my jam jams.
Hammering tacks with you is one of my favorite things.
Fantastic job! Beautiful design!
Thanks!
Amazing workflow!!
Thanks!
Awesome job 👍👍👍
I love the shell casings for the plugs. Great idea😀
Thanks! One of my better idea
Love those things! Great job!
Thanks, Bruce!
This was soooo amazing to watch! You did an amazing job! You are awesome!
Thank you! I'm really proud of this project and video.
Those came out fantastic! Well done! The shell casing dowels are a nice touch.
Thanks! I'm really glad that idea popped in my head, works great
Holy crap! That’s a lot of boxes but they all came out awesome. Hopefully the customer was happy how they came out.
Thank you! Haven’t delivered yet, but they’ve loved the photos
Looks great. Nice touch with the leather and the spent cartridges as dowels.
Thank you! I think they really make them.
That was a great video! Very well explained, and entertaining too. Plus I liked all of the woodworking techniques!
Thank you, James!
They look great! I love batch building - never done 100 of anything though!
Me neither! It was an experience.
Wow, quite an undertaking on your part. The finished boxes look great.
Thank you! It was quite the job.
I am so glad that you use the ammo casings when I heard you mention dowels I thought of that. 👌
It was a great touch!
Awesome project!
Thank you!
That was a great video and love how they turned out. I had a lot of fun working on these with you.
Thanks, I had a lot of fun having you in the shop! It was a fun day.
very, very, very good, you did a great job. I would love to handle a project of this size, you gave me a lot of tips, first tip, get a good friend to help you, lol.
thanks again for a great video.
Excellent! Having a good friend to help you is a big help!
Will is a great guy
He is!
Loved the dowels. Got inspired AND entertained :D
Thanks, I love hearing that!
Pretty damn nice my friend I got exhausted just watching but you persevered and the boxes look fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
I'm exhausted from making them, thanks for watching!
Those came out awesome Caleb!
Thanks!
Great job!

Well done Caleb!!
Thanks, Chris!
Great job! Heck of a order to knock out!
Yeah it was, thanks!

Yesss! Finally here! Congrats Caleb! 🍻
Thanks! I’m really glad to finally have it done!
your commentary is spot on. great video!
Thank you!
Awesome video bud!! 😁👍 they are awesome!!!
Thanks Shaun!
Great job
Thank you!
Good job man! Such labor of love... 100 of those is not easy
It wasn’t. But all the more rewarding to finish!
Very cool!
Thank you!
Those are awesome, I hope the client was equally impressed. Very nice.
Thanks! I haven’t delivered them yet, but they’ve loved the photos!
I can't imagine making one of these as nice as you did let alone 100! Such a cool design with so many little details that really make the look and design super nice!
Thanks, Ethan! It was quite the undertaking for sure.
Thanks. Lots of lessons there.
Thank you! I try to pass useful info in my projects.
@@YouCanMakeThisToo All very useful, And, I forgot to say they looked great too! Thanks again
@@bobbonham4823 No worries, thanks!
After watching you make a 100 of these...I had to subscribe. Kudos to you. They look great.
Thank you!
Very nice video they came out nice
Thanks Antonio!
Cool jig!
Thanks!
This was great Caleb! Man that is a lot of repetition. You earned a drink. Love the bandsaw truck from the arrogant hacks. 🤣
Thanks man! haha yeah, glad you liked my joke :D When my wife heard it she was a little considered folks would take it seriously, I reassured her our community knows what we're about :)
Pretty coop would love to own one !
Thank you!
Those are badass👊🏼
Thank you!
Man, I'm exhausted just from watching all that! Nice work, tough to press through but well done!
I'm exhausted from doing it! and thanks!
Yep wear your respirator boys and girls. I owned a welding, fabrication shop. We had a 24X24 paint booth that I was in quite often. Thought I was 10ft tall and bulletproof back then, but now I suffer with COPD. Side note I've never smoked a cigarette in my life.
Yikes! That’s no good, I’m sorry to hear that man.
I totally enjoyed this video, especially your commentary. Its not that often you get someone who admits they do make quite a few mistakes, which helps the rest of us seem not so useless. I dont know why I even watched the video as I am not a woodworker, but am very interested, maybe because I didn't know what "Beer Flight Boxes with Bullets" was. I only saw it cos it was in recommended.
I especially liked your comment about some CZcams guys being "arrogant hacks", which is putting it rather mildly, I came across one quite recently, who's opinion was the only valid one, and to quiet my opposing opinion, he blocked me. So much for free speech.
Those shells and the nice peace of branded leather gave them a real custom type finish, as well as looking very nice.
Subscribed. Thanks.
Instead of writing a long comment, I'll just agree with this guy, awesome video .
That arrogant hacks bit was actually meant to be a jest towards my friends.. most in the community are not like that at all. I’m really sorry you ran into someone who was, that attitude doesn’t help anyone. I’m glad you enjoyed this, thanks for watching even though you’re not a woodworker!
A easy solution to moving that fence all the time would be to dedicate a socket and ratchet just for that tool and build a small holder for it attached to that tool on some tools ill even Epoxy a magnet to that one to stick it on the machine its for BTW if you are in the States Walmart sells a small Stanley 1/4” set that is lifetime warranted in a case for under $20 bucks built in the same factory that builds Snap Ons too i use those a bit and they work well ironically the fit and finish are pretty decent IMO
Good idea, thanks!
Well you give me an idea of what I'm about to get into. I'm about to start a project that involves 1000 pieces! Sure hope it comes out ok since I've now mentioned it a few times on the ol' internet😁 Great video! And I love the shell casings as well!👍👏
Ah man! Can’t wait to see what it is. Thanks!
Using the syringes to apply clear epoxy is genius. Great build! Love the final product - hope you made some good money!
Thanks! I bought a 100 pack off Amazon super cheap, they're really handy to have around the shop.
Impressive!!
Thanks!
Like the Idea of using the shells as dowls
Thanks, I was proud of that idea
Sir you are amazing. Same thing happens to me when a take on a project not knowing how long i will actually take to complete.
Thank you!
Very nice
Thank you!
Wow! That's an amazing amount of work! It's a good thing Will was able to come by and help or else you'd still be working and we wouldn't have a video to watch 😄 i will say though, based on my work, i think i like loose sloppy joints 🤣🤣
Hey no judgement, to each their own 😁 haha and yeah! Without Wills help the video probably wouldn’t be out today.
I have removed the spent primers and put new primers in that have the anvils and chemicals swabbed out so it looks like a new cartridge in the knife handle or scale. It would be real cool to have a good selection of calibers and brands but that wood be nuts-o-crazy time consuming. Bullets are art!
That would’ve been tons of time! And one reason I went with spent rounds is so customers wouldn’t be concerned that there was still explosives in them or think it’s a full cartridge and try to take it out.
More power to ya ! I go crazy if I have 14 of something to make! Lol 😂 Nice job. 👍
Thanks! I do too! This was definitely a challenge
Superb
Thanks!
Great video! Can you find some knobs on this size bolt? May help with the jointer fence and lose the wrench.
Not that size. But I can weld some on.... I’ll do that, some day
The tiny Japanese double sided hand saw is so adorable
That little flush saw has been a huge saver
A lot of work but they look amazing!!
They were, thanks!
To be honest I initially watched because I didn’t know what a beer flight was lol. But they came out great and I was entertained
Haha well glad you still watched and enjoyed it!
Man, what a job!
Oh it was!
My favorite part was the drill jig for the cups
Good to know! The drill press hogs saved me a ton of time.
Nice!
Thanks!
Love the little touches that your put into these.....and no that has nothing to do with your hose performance issues....for that see a doctor. 😎Awesome build brother!
Hahaha thanks Scott!
Add a rubber band to the handles of the needle nose pliers to hold the brass tacks.
That’s a good idea
Très joli travail bravo salut à bientôt Jeannot 🛠😉
Well, you made 100 boxes for jars or beercans. With a workshop like yours, you can definitely make great things. Greetings
4oz nice glass bottles... but thanks! Got some sweet projects coming.
Very nice job, they look fantastic !! How much did you sell them for ?
I’d rather not say because the client may be reselling them when they open.
@@YouCanMakeThisToo I understand, fair enough :)
Fantastic work... very inspiring. Could you share with me where you got the branding iron you used on the leather patches. I'm thinking about doing the same thing on a wood working project I'm developing for a restaurant. Cost is an issue.
Thanks, I really appreciate it.
I got it from gearheart industries, link in the description.
I also like the cartridge casings as dowels but using a rimmed cartridge with the rims standing proud would have been a really nice touch. Just a thought for the next 100 cases you need to make. (grin)
That fair, personally I like that they’re flush with the surface.
Nice builds but there is a carrying handle missing! For all the viewers ouside the USA it would be nice to explain WHAT a Beer Flight is, befor starting the clip!
I definitely should of done that! I didn't realize it wasn't common knowledge.
@@YouCanMakeThisToo Thanks and best wishes for your projects to come.
Great work and i hope you gave them a nice bill, for the very long and tedious work that you did making all 100 of these.
Cheers (sorry couldn't help it)
Barry (ENG)
Your Cheers gave me a chuckle, how appropriate 😁
some big knobs or levers might be better on the jointer
Definitely. Been planning on welding some on for a few years now.
Hey Brother great video!! Can I ask what kind of mic you use for your voice overs? You audio sounds spot on !!
Thanks! It's been a learning journey... I use a Blue Snowball. The trick is the post processing. I use Adobe Audition to record it and then run it through compression, normalization, and a low pass filter. I'm too indecisive to add any EQ.. but those three are ESSENTIAL to getting good audio.
YouCanMakeThisToo ok cool. I been recording right into premier and I will have to try your technique. I have upgraded all my mics and even record in the closet to cut down on the echo but it still comes out a bit off. Thanks so much brother I’m for sure going to try this !!
I have a love/hate relationship with jigs. You made jigs for mass production. What I hate is having to made a jig for just a few items of just for a single item. It takes longer to make the jig that to do what you built it for. But if you want it done right you have to do what you have to do.
I feel you there. When I did the prototypes for these I just marked it out and didn't bother with a jig. I seldom do jigs for one offs unless super precision is needed.. or I'll do test cuts, both take time. CA glue and activator can make for really fast jigs though. Just the nature of the game.
good job, can i ask why you didnt sand out the bandsaw marks on the sides?
Client wanted a rough look on them. Ultimately that’ll wear better in a bar environment. Dents and dings will blend in.
i see you are using the rz mask. i was thinking about buying but the reviews form people who wear glasses were not good. how do you like it? i like the one band thing to hold it on looks very convenient for glasses and hearing protection.
I like it. It’s worked well for me. I do occasionally get fogging, but not often
What model is your miter saw? I’ve been keeping my eye out for one that doesn’t extend through the back
It’s the makita 12” slider. It’s been great so far
Well that was one hell of a marathon, mate. 👍🏽
Glad to see you got through it without pulling your hair out...🤔
Oh wait! 😉🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha well played.
@@YouCanMakeThisToo
So glad you can take a joke and not be offended. 👍🏽
I was going to delete it, but by the way you carry yourself on camera,
you seem like a pretty laid back kinda guy.
But if you did tell me where to get off,
I would have apologised and deleted the comment.
Cheers mate, have a good one! 😉
What brand and model is your respirator at the beginning of the video I noticed you use 2 different respirators the blue one
The blue one is an RZ mask. The big one is a 3M
@@YouCanMakeThisToo I have the 3m thanks for the info wonder if the RZ will work and fit under a welding mask
Tedious but after getting done it must of been gratifying. I'm absolutely stealing that shell casing detail. Not sure for what but I'll figure that part out.
It definitely is one of the more satisfying builds to have wrapped up! And go for it, just send me pics of whatever you decide to use it in!
Are the leather badges held on with anything besides the brass tacks? I would be afraid they won't stay on with handling and wear.
Those tacks are TIGHT
👍👍👍👍 WOW ......sounds like fun.........🤣😂
It was!
Why drill the recess for the beer glass when the glasses are in the confines of the box?
Still helps keep them in place and from bouncing off each other. I offered to do it without for the same reason, but the client still wanted them.
I made some telephone shaped flight trays for a telephone themed brewery. They were much easier to make than these but they also didn't want to pay much.
That sounds cool! Sucks they didn’t want to pay much for the work.
Nice boxes. what are the used for?
For a brew pub that’s opening. They serve four 4oz glasses of beer in them, a sampler basically.
@@YouCanMakeThisToo At a pub they put your beer in glasses and serve them to you in a box? I still don't get it.
@@timhallas4275 It's one option. It's for a brewery, they have varieties.. if you want a bottle or draft I'm sure they'll offer that too. These are for the hipster or indecisive crowd that want to try several drafts without ordering a slew of tall drinks.
@@YouCanMakeThisToo Yeah, that explains a short glass,, but not a box. Here's a more pertinent question for you. How much do they pay you (per box)?
Where did you get the brand made?
Gearheart industry, link in description.
Wow that was really labor intensive. Would it be too much to ask how much you charged that brewery for the commission?
They may be reselling some of these at some point so I’d rather not. But thanks!
Are you local to the area that Cartridge Brewing is opening?
Unfortunately not.
Bury a bone in the shop😂
Stuff happens 🤷♂️
Титаническая работа. Поздравляю с хорошим завершением!
A lot of work but I had faith in you nice job.
Thank you!
Very nice job you did, but I have no idea what a "flight"box" is, or what it's used for. Here in Florida, we use Cuzies, or coasters. I guess a beer flight box is a northern thing...
Ah yeah I should’ve explained that. A flight is a sampler. Normally served on boards, sometimes boxes. Four small beers, chalk board is to label each one.
@@YouCanMakeThisToo Thank you, kind sir. You did an excellent job!!
at most brewery's you can buy a sampler pack, they have 4 4oz. glasses. they are then put into the flight box
Good lord! I hope you got a "Caleb Drinks for free for forever" card for that place! And yes - Snodgrass for the win!
That’s probably why they contract people out that are 12 hours away 😁
At 2:00mins of the video, why not use a socket, extension, and a ratchet, it would be much easier and faster
Because then one would stay out of my set. That wrench lives on the jointer for that job. Doesn’t bother me. It’s having to remove the bolts that’s annoying.
100-beer flights sound like a great way to spend an afternoon. Very disappointed to find the video was just regular beer flights. 😉. Nice work.
Haha if only it was an afternoon!
