I've been watching a bunch of old videos of Roy lately, and one thing keeps occuring to me: Roy loved watching and listening to his bandmates. You can catch him watching other players' solos intensely, over and over again. I am very grateful for the time we got to experience his amazing talent.
Love that punchy jazz, subtle hip-hop groove of the tune, and the solos. Yeah, these gents got it right. Lots of fresh ideas in the out chorus, too (the overall feel reminded me a little of Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" quintet several decades ago. But this generation of players took that groove to another level.
Ron Blake on sax. Very slept on.
