The forces exerted on the engines, transmission, rotor blades and airframe is unbelievable. And, an incredible feat of piloting skills and engineering. “SIKORSKY.”
I use to do that in a Huey, way back when, the Safety Office would yell at you for 5 minutes if he saw you. Can't image doing a Rapid Decel in a 47/53/54/55 ... Impressive!
In 1968 a Marine pilot and a Sikorsky test pilot did loops and barrel rolls with a H53A over LI sound. Imagine what it’s capable of nowadays. We adored this big beautiful beast in the Corps! Semper Fi
They used to do barrel rolls in the Deltas out of Kaneohe in the 90’s. The E models have stick limiters and I believe they even retrofitted them to the Deltas too.
I love the pratfall at 0:57. Is that the real reason they wear helmets in the navy? It goes unnoticed so presumably it is common to see a sailor on the floor :)
nice bit of piloting skills . I loved doing quick stops with mu 2 metre rotor diameter alouette R/C helicopter .1999 and still going strong original ceramic bearings and 2nd combustion chamber . The original inconel vapouriser tubes fatigued and led to a loss of power.
I won't speak for every 53 pilot (Navy, USMC, foreign), but I decreased *and then increased* collective to do it most effectively (by my judgment): decrease to keep from ballooning as you raise the nose, then once nose-high enough to have brought your lift vector closer to horizontal (to at least have a larger horizontal - aft - component), bring in collective (power) to create effectively an air-brake: lift with a significant aft component. Any vertical component of that aft-ish vector keeps the a/c from sinking too rapidly as you then transition to a standard no-hover landing. (Ballooning is the main issue when learning/instructing newbies.)
miamimo305 Spoken like a true Spark Chaser. Except you can. Us Airframers, on the other hand, if you have a problem with the airframe or hydraulics, you really do have a problem.
Would you be okay with me featuring parts of this in an episode of Daily Dose of Aviation? Of course, you will be credited both in the video and in the description. Awesome video btw!
@Edward Lundblad In the '82 First Lebanese War, an Israeli CH-53 "Yas'ur" performed a 360 loop while evading a Syrian MIG-21 in air to air combat. The CH-53 survived to limp back to an Israeli airbase. On later inspection at our D-Check depot, the air frame was totally written off because of structural deformation. ( Ex IAF Structural Engineer / avionics fitter grade-12 )
In a flare the disc is offloaded as collective pitch is reduced therefore it is not a manoeuvre that induces heavy loading on transmission and rotorhead.

Tv 5150 Yes. But, it still requires great proficiency.
SICK Korsky! 😂
Are we going to ignore the guy falling over?....😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣

He was goofing for the camera. Look at his face.
Who cares
Badass imagine the 75° incline view of the sky from the pilots seat

I love how the ground crew just jumps into the frame of shot 😂
That was absolutely an awesome landing. I drooled like a baby over this landing.
That was the only maneuver that I found a bit scary during my training. It is fun, though.
This guy pilots
I know 2 retired 53 pilots. One Marine and one Navy. They both loved the platform.
When the nose is up how do you know where the ground is? You could touch the tail to the ground?
@@mshaque5458 czcams.com/video/brkDjQ-aiok/video.html
does the pilot turn down the throttle as he points up the nose during this maneuver?
Gotta admit a quick stop in a R22 just doesn’t have the same appeal. Nice one
Unreal skill when you can't even see the ground below you.
Avionics are dope little tools man
A quick stop isn't a landing maneuver. Altitude is held so no judgment is really necessary in that sense.
I think he was able to see the ground, there are usually small windows next to the pedals
That OP read much more adventurous without all those explanations.
Instrument flying
Bad ass pilot !
Massive respect for his absolute control of such a heavy chopper.
And to ground maintenance.
( Ex IAF structural engineer )
Thats bad ass to see a big beast like that so nimble.
A rough analogy to helicopters:
Piloting a chopper is to fixed-wing aviation, as sniping is to general marksmanship.
I can never get enough of that.

The Beast. Pure power and great piloting skills.
Beating the air in to submission.

I think he ducked to avoid getting in the frame.

Mad skills! These pilots are the best.
That moment you dump all the divers out the back because you forgot to tell them to hang on...
What a Chopper must be amazing being around those things
Mad Skills !!!
Both the most fun and scariest moments during my time flying in the Beast. Especially when certain JO's took the controls.
I see why people went so nuts over that Chinook - Yeovilton 2015 - Quick Stop video now, what a awesome sight to see. =O
Fantastic video!!
I remember the first time I felt the rotor wash from one of these on the helo deck, and thinking "Walkdowns are no joke".

Not too bad, usually enough force to keep you planted into what you’re sitting on.

Sailors call it "the deck" no matter what surface it is. Deck, Bulkhead (walls) and Overhead for a ceiling.
Bleed Flare, flaring up and lowering the collective. Beautiful.
Loved being part of HM-15… 1996 to 2001. AMS1
