  • Are humans violent by nature? Or is it something we learn from society?
We love violent movies and video games, and we watch rolling news coverage of wars and crimes on a daily basis. And it’s often the most egregious acts that receive the most media attention.
What’s with our obsession with violence?
Are we more dangerous than we realise?
Will all of us, given the right circumstances, commit atrocities against other human beings?
Amr Waked tries to answer these questions in this episode, adapted from the Arabic-language series Dahaleez.

Violence and friendliness are not mutually exclusive. People can be friendly towards their friends and family, yet commit horrible violence to others. The world is full of such people, even today.

I see it as we need to accept that much of our research on other primates applies to us, and see from that basis that we are not inherently violent as individuals.
However, we build communities and societies that end up in competition for resources. This leads to the employment of violence for political purposes.

I dislike violence of any kind. I can't even watch a movie or a TV show with excessive violence. I am not a violent person BUT I do have a nasty temper which over the years I have learned to contain a bit. If someone goes to hurt me on purpose, I will naturally defend myself. If it's a matter of my blood or someone elses blood, it's going to be theirs. Same goes if someone tries to hurt someone I love especially my two dogs. My anger goes from flatline to code red. Human beings are the meanest and cruelist species on the planet. It will be the human race's end result.

That doesn't mean we can't control it. We're predispositioned for a lot of behaviors that we have the ethics and self control to not carry out, such as impulsive violence or sexual drive, or even just choosing not to eat animals because there's no need for it anymore.

I've been going through the comments and people are forgetting a few important things to be noted about humans.
    1) Jealousy and envy leads to violence. There is a wise saying that goes "ignorance leads to fear, fear leads to hate and hate leads to violence this is the equation". To argue that humans are not inherently violent is to be ignorant about human emotions why? Because emotions cloud your judgement.
    2) The war for control and resources. When you go back intime and look at the history of slavery...which i can breakdown to be the envy of one race over the other. The barbaric incidences that took place and how the westernas and europeans are sucking the life out of poor Africans is a good argument that humans are inherently violent.
    3) Human emotions can be termed and controlled. To be born is one thing but to grow up is another we have to work on our selves every single day to become better people to change humans and society we must all work together as a whole. I hope you read with understanding God help us all. If we weren't violent we won't have the law and justice systems also prisons all the dutch historian was saying is a little bit true but in acurate.

This world is really imperfect and unbalanace perhaps Because evil forces are lurking here, but we good humans must not allow it. Violence is not just about those wars, racism, or conflicts, even a simple act of rudeness is also part of being violent. Just my opinion.

    @ahmaunahma Před 11 měsíci +1

The primary human instinct is to survive and reproduce, and by that standard, we commit the necessary violence and we form the necessary relationships depending on our primary goal to survive and reproduce. Humans are social creatures who form groups in order to compete with other groups for survival and reproduction, and this is visible throughout history, how premodern groups & empires conquered and genoc!ded other premodern groups & empires in order to spread their own genetic footprint. Just look at the statistics about how many women today have had rap3 fantasies, and the reason so, is because women in premodern and palaeolithic times used to be taken as reproductive assets after their men lost territory to stronger tribes, and as a result, they evolved this mechanism in order to enjoy the process, and this is why the average human has twice as many female ancestors as male. Humans also evolved from tree monkey to human on a hunter-gatherer diet consisting on 75-90% of animal protein, and the fact that we are at the top of the food chain informs us about our superior ability to be violent in comparison to other species. Which child hasn't stepped on a colony for a quick rush of dopamine? All but except a few of the human racial groups have the ability to create centralised states, and when creating an establishment, violence or the threat of violence is a requirement in order to control the violent natures of the general population from wreaking havoc onto society. Even when we are under stress, the physiological reaction that we feel is the flight or fight response, and unless we lack the ability or the confidence to fight, we always will take that route due to our competitive evolutionary natures.
Edit: Clearly, humans are inherently violent, unless they lack the hormones to be able to be.

It's the rules of the reality we live in. One side is dark and violent...the other seeks knowledge and the light and both end up fighting each other for supremacy. We were created that way but also society and certain ways of thinking control us more than we like to admit. Speaking from experience...I've gone into the darkness and had to fight it when I was in a bad place...it can consume you and the impulses are difficult to control. Emotions are the key I've found. You have to be responsible for them and remember that you are the one in control but it is very difficult not to let something out.
I've always thought that the character of Spock in Star Trek was more like the battle we face daily regarding which side wins out...the more logical and contained side with "in built walls" keep out the more untamed and destructive parts of our nature at bay. Some can keep up these walls and maintain the defences although it is a tough job...some I think can't do this so well and let their emotions over-run them and hence we have a more violent society. There's variables to consider too such as mental health and well being, species difference and gender involved.
If we grew up as blank slates in a world that had no violence...then would we be at a disadvantage to be used and conquered as a result by those who had taken a more emotion and war-like path?. I think we need both our dark and light halves to balance the equation out but it's a job, a responsibility we share to keep this balance working. I think we're a dual being that needs teaching about our nature...not control...but then again...with knowledge comes control and the darker aspects of it...we're on a fine tightrope aren't we?. Which way do we follow?.

The points that Mr. Rutger mentioned about human beings are special because of our "collective ability to work together" is seriously flawed. The fact that humans disagree, or to a greater extent, rebel (which in turn results to violence), when our ideals or goals doesn't match is because of our individual intelligence. We have that ability to think individually, which is why there are different groups, divisions, organizations, etc. Without individual intelligence, we just obey out of instinct like ants, bees or other colonial species, who by the way are excellent examples of species who collectively work together because they don't possess individual intelligence to disagree or rebel against their queens. Whatever the queen have them do, they simply obey out of pure instinct. Now is living out of instinct a peaceful way of life? Certainly, but that is not intelligence or humanly lol.

No people are not inherently violent, people's psychology suffers from violence not benefits it, if that would be normal the result would not be for example traumatized soldiers or victims of violence. It's abnormality, a psychological mental disorder. People's natural state is friendliness and cooperation. People unfriendly if they have been traumatized from violent interaction from other people, if they would heal from such traumatic experiences, they are naturally become interested in cooperation and being good towards other people, There are of course heavy cases where it requires very heavy changes in persons mind before one can have any respect for other people. Such people simply needs to be kept isolated from society.

It's an example that violence is not normal to people. It's not natural state of psychology.
It's rare to see crazy animal doing violence for no reason, in most cases it has animal level reason, with human violence it only when people have mental illness or self-defending. If they are not mentaly ill, they are friendly to other people and naturally want to cooperate and simply raise families in peace.

It works in the Animal Kingdom. But I don't think it works as well in human civilization.
(Farmers, stone masons, food production, etc.)
All of this isn't based on fighting or competition. It's based on problem solving, real-world orientation, and lack of hostility.

One thing that I have noticed about today, is that most people don't talk to eachother. They stay in their personal bubbles and safe spaces. They are very cynical about the actions and intentions of others. When disagreements take place, they don't communicate. I think people are naturally territorial, so this feeds into the potential for violence.

Before domestication of dog, human have been prey to most animal. Around 40,000 years ago dogs helped human to become predator like them. This is the beginning of dogmestication of human, being a predator, acquairing the taste of violent. Violence has infected human genes, or rather the culture of violence has become the traumatic tradition. Human are able to revenge all predators for billion of years of trauma on human.

Aspects of violence are needed to survive , how can one survive w/o chopping a tree to build a house. Or lighting a fire, deleting an animal to survive. The issue is when you corner a human into a box trying to control him rather than understand his nature then he will become violent.

Is mankind "inherently violent" ? Mankind did NOT "inherit" violence, for when God created mankind some 6,000 years ago, he made Adam in his "image" (Gen 1:26), able to genuinely love and understand what true justice, how to treat others with dignity and respect.
However, with the rebellion in the garden of Eden not long after this that introduced sin or a flawed personality (Gen 3:1-6; Rom 7:14-20), also came wrongful anger, as when Adam's oldest son Cain murdered his younger brother Abel (Gen 4:8), because God looked with favor on Abel's sacrifice, for Abel genuinely wanted to please God, while Cain, though offering some "fruits of the land", allowed his heart to become treacherous, so that he became angry at Abel's being shown favor over him and of which the account at Genesis 4 says:
"Abel became a shepherd of the flock, but Cain became a cultivator of the ground. After some time, Cain brought some fruits of the land as an offering to Jehovah (God's name, see Isa 12:2; 26:4, KJV). But Abel brought some firstlings of his flock, including their fat."
"While Jehovah looked with favor on Abel and on his offering, he did not look with any favor on Cain and on his offering. So Cain grew hot with anger and was dejected. Then Jehovah said to Cain: “Why are you so angry and dejected ? If you turn to doing good (getting truly rid of your anger, humbling himself before Jehovah), will you not be restored to favor ? But if you do not turn to doing good, sin is crouching at the door, and its craving is to dominate you (so that anger will take control); but will you get the mastery over it ?”(Gen 4:3-7)
Here is how wrongful anger that can lead to violence plays out, as seen at James 1:14, 15: "But each one is tried (or tested) by being drawn out and enticed by his own desire (of whether or not a person will "toe the line" and show genuine love or allow wrong desires, such as wrongful anger to "get the mastery" over him or her)."
"Then the (wrong) desire (such as wrongful anger), when it has become fertile (or allowed to "grow", to fester), gives birth to sin (with the person now putting his anger into motion, thinking how to "get even" with someone); in turn sin, when it has been carried out, brings forth death (when anger has taken over a person instead of having self-control)."
At Psalms 37, David wrote: "Do not be upset because of evil men or envious of wrongdoers. They will quickly wither like grass and shrivel like green new grass.......Keep silent before Jehovah and wait expectantly for him. Do not be upset by the man who succeeds in carrying out his schemes."
"Let go of anger and abandon rage; Do NOT become upset and turn to doing evil. For evil men will be done away with, but those hoping in Jehovah will possess the earth. Just a little while longer, and the wicked will be no more; You will look at where they were, and they will not be there. But the meek (who exercise self-control, showing genuine love, waiting on Jehovah to correct matters) will possess the earth, and they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.......forever."(Ps 37:1, 2, 7-11, 29)

Yes, I am very serious, for the Bible explains mankind's origin, how mankind was created in God's "image" (Gen 1:26), able to put into practice justice and genuine love, but what mankind became as a result of the rebellion in the garden of Eden some 6,000 years ago, becoming selfish, loveless, and at times violent, being easy to grasp for those who will reason on mankind's beginning and subsequent "mutiny of three" against God's rightful sovereignty.(Gen 3:1-6)
When the rebellion broke out, with "the serpent" handing a very tempting offer to Eve, that if she partook of fruit from "the tree of knowledge of good and bad", that established God's right to set moral boundaries for newly created mankind (see Gen 2:16, 17), that she could be "like God, knowing good and bad", being her own "boss" and set her own moral boundaries.(Gen 3:1-5)
This offer proved too tempting, so that Eve reached out and took some of the fruit, eating it, and then when Adam found her, she offered some to him, who also accepted it and ate it, introducing sin or now missing the mark of perfect obedience to God, for the word "sin" is from the Hebrew word chatta, that means to "miss".
So, instead of mankind imitating God, whose name is Jehovah (see Isa 12:2; 26:4, KJV), and who is known as "God is love" (1 John 4:8), mankind now became self-centered, with Cain murdering his younger brother Abel, and then six generations later of Cain's descendants, Lamech became violent, saying: "Hear my voice, you wives of Lamech; Give ear to my saying: A man I have killed for wounding me, yes a young man for striking me".(Gen 4:23)
And by the year 2490 B.C.E., some 1,536 years after Adam's creation, "Jehovah saw that mankind's wickedness was great on the earth and that EVERY inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only bad ALL the time"(Gen 6:1-5), so that Jehovah brought the Global Deluge in 2370 B.C.E. to annihilate all of mankind, except Noah and his family, eight people out of perhaps millions living then.(Gen 7:21-23; 1 Pet 3:20)
Today, the violence of mankind has reached a crescendo, and will only be put to a halt when Jehovah destroys the three pillars of wicked human society with their supporters, (1) politics, called "a wild beast" at Rev 13:1, 2, (2) the false religions of the world called Babylon the Great at Rev 17:5, and (3) greedy commerce called "the merchants of the earth" at Rev 18:3, 11, destroying them at "the war of the great day of God the Almighty" called Armageddon.(Rev 16:14, 16)
It is only after the destruction of wicked mankind will violence that is so prevalent today be stopped, as Daniel 2:44 says that Jehovah will use a heavenly government called God's Kingdom to "crush" to death all who are not its loyal subjects (some 8 billion people), so that genuine peace can once again be on the earth, and those who "loves violence" will permanently disappear.(see Ps 11:5, 6)

Humans (like all animals) arose out of a survival instinct to pass on its genes, so in a subsistence world, where people are on their own, without the intervention of a State, they will be inherently violent. But societies is supposed to change that. The proclivity for violence depends on which part of the world and which culture you are from. In countries with strong governments and strong cultures, where people aren't really concerned for their basic survival, people would tend to be passive, like a well domesticated pet animal that has lost its survival instinct. Strong civilisations like China, India, Japan, Italy, etc., lean heavily in this direction. Then, you have other societies with weaker governments (or governments who don't care), and your survival isn't as guaranteed. Even if a said country was rich, it may have been designed to always stay primitive - like the US, for example, where it's every man for himself, civilian ownership of firearms is considered a "right". The US may be rich, but it certainly isn't civilised. In that case, people more closely approximate untamed wild animals and will have much stronger proclivity towards violence. The statistics on murder, for example, bear this out.

Humans aren't violent they are forced to accept the nature of violent. Every human wants to live in peace but some say that those who want to live in peace they actually powerless or fear to fight their enemies as they can be killed easily so they put the theory of peace. In other hand, a powerful person has the option to choose both peace and violence.he can suppress others by his power. I think it is a situation when people choose violence or peace.

I believe we need to learn to resolve differences and problems in the world without resorting to violence and killing one another. Violence is costly and results in extensive suffering. Did you ever wonder how WWI began? It was sparked out of the assassination of one man. Do you know how costly WWI was? It cost the lives of 9 million combatants and 5 million civilians, in addition to $186 billion in direct costs, and another $151 billion in indirect costs. Nothing would bring back the life of this one man, however wrong it was, but people act out of outrage and insult. To reason that killing another 14 million people somehow is going to lead to a better world is insanity. There has to be a better way, and people need to keep pushing for that, and choosing peace over violence and reconciling matters peacefully.
