Too Excessive With Roof Sealing System? Hopefully No More Leaks!

- Onward with the vintage caravan! In this video, I seal the roof to try and stop some of the leaks and then paint it an aluminium colour...
Lots of stages for this, with some sealant tape, metal bog, fixing a seam that's coming away, rubber painting the whole roof, metal primer on the edges, then finally making it pretty with aluminium enamel paint using a roller, brush and spray gun.

Just found your page. Thank you fir posting- this makes me feel better about my learning/progress. I belong to some FB pages and everyone has perfect campers they have rebuilt. I don’t have the expertise and I’m doing what I can with what I’ve got. 🙂. Watching your video reminded me not everyone is an expert, and we learn as we go. Thank you for posting and keep it up!
A tip for the paint tray; for easy cleanup and to prevent old paint flecks in new paint, stick the tray in a plastic bag and tie/tape up, then pour the paint onto the tray over top of the plastic and use as you normally would, then all your have to do at the end is throw away the plastic bag and your tray is spotless :-).
You can also get clear inserts for the tray, which are probably slightly easier to use but of course more expensive than a plastic bag. Unless you're using supermarket carrier bags.
Nice to know I'm not the only one going insane trying to paint a caravan
haha how's your project going? Or not going?
Thank you karen for this video.i think you are doing a vey good job and i'am very proud of you.i'am so glad that you are not alone anymore in this dificult time that we are living at the moment.Ayden is a great guy and you make a lovely couple. look after him.big kisses from France.
Thank you Gaëtan! It is nice having Haydens company during this lockdown. Hope you and your family are safe!
Hi Karen. You are doing a good job on the caravan. If I could give an advice, I would try to get an airdriven spray gun and a compressor for the painting. That is a big difference from those electric guns. The airdriven gun (with a seperate compressor) delivers much finer particles more evenly, and the result usually get much better. I admire your ability to go on with a smile, even with a big project like that! Best wishes from Norway!
Thanks Jan. After trying that spray gun, I did wonder how different a properly professional version would be.
when spraying, never keep your finger on the trigger. Start by pointing gun away from the edge and in one easy motion go across to the other side and release trigger when you go past the edge of roof, then go back and do the same again but a little higher up and keep going, starting and stopping from edge to edge. Don't expect it to cover in one go. It's better to do many thin coats than a couple of thick coat. the last 2 coats should be a thinner mixture and this will stop the orange peel effect. Keep going TK there's no rush.
Ohh good to hear! I could see how badly I was doing it when editing🤣
So difficult. I admire that you are taking this on.
So so much to learn with this project!!
Karen, you are doing a great job, spray painting is best left with the professionals, with a roller you feel more at ease and with a perfect finish
Hey thank you for your in depth process. You answered lots of questions I didn't know I had. Very much appreciate your sharing your learning curves and experiences with different products and equipment.
From here about ,14943 kms away it looks as if you're doing a wonderful job on the roof with a little help from Hayden and that broom, it also keeps you a social distance apart although I have a sneaking suspicion that isn't always the case when the camera isn't running........you go girl on both accounts....caravan and Hayden I think you rock
haha, that's a decent distance away😜Your messages has made me smile! Thank you
That’s a labour of love. Keep at it!😷🌞😷
A labour of something🤣
Quite...😷👍😷
When I saw you rinse the roof off with the pressure sprayer all I could think was “how much of that water went inside?”... it’s such a cute little thing... I really hope it turns out well for you ❤️
Yeah... one way to check where the leaks are!
Girl power, with a sprinkling of Hayden power and lashings of mains power 220v.
Keep going, you're doing a brilliant job.
Please refresh my memory of your supplies link, and I'll gladly make a donation.
Best wishes always Gxxxy
Thank you Karen, I really enjoyed watching that. I've been wondering how you are getting on and hope you are well during this lock down. Look forward to the next update, thanks!
Thanks Nicky! This was actually filmed before the lockdown. Next weeks video is more of a real-time update. All good here! Hope you are ok?
@@TravellingK yes well thanks Karen 😀 take care and I look forward to the next update 😀
same as Jay Zee below. Your doing a fine job, keep up the good work.
Good to know!!
God I wish I was good at DIY like you. If I had bought this caravan I would have to let the professionals sort all the jobs out.
I'm d-i-y tree trimming at the moment - having never done it before!
I've already learnt so much! Just hope I keep the motivation going...
It's your first attempt. Recon your local DIY suppliers love you! Hope you will get out of this venture what you want. Take care and all the best. Cheers
It is looking so much nicer!!
Good work as always K, admire your efforts to keep at it until you get the job done as you want it... 👍🏻 ✅ 👏🏻
Stay safe and keep well over there, cfn, Rog... 👍🏻 😉 🐍
Thanks Rog! I've started procrastinating this week... hopefully get back into it soon. Hope you are well.
Good work! When you come to the end of a paint stroke, generally it’s best to let go of the trigger and follow through with the stroke. Then push it again on the return stroke. When you change directions with the trigger depressed, you will get runs. Many thin coats are better than one or two thick ones. Never pull the trigger if the paint sprayer is not moving
Ah that's good to know! Great tips, thank you
I have spent years as a painter, so I would go for a 5" brush on the roof with an 11/2" for edges. You would have trouble reaching across ....with your jolly approach you could rig up access with a scaffold board strapped to a ladder leaning either side of van?? But ladder would need to be lashed to van to stop them sliding. Just an idea well done Karen for your efforts
Very impressed! Awesome work, good luck and keep it up! Peace from New York.
Love you work
I always do some research before I do anything I have never done before and good place for that is CZcams.
really enjoying this build series and nice to know your more then willing to try new things as not everyone will . . Thanks for sharing keep up the great work
I've learnt others make things look easier than they are 🤣 But feel like I'm slowly learning.
@@TravellingKVery well and 50 out 10 for trying
Looks like its coming on a treat, well done for having ago.
I'm really hoping it looks ok in the end!!
Thanks for posting.
Thanks Dan😀
Lovely Vid thanks - love the way you get on with it - and the relaxing music - your gonna be a great caravan restorer on your next one! :) Go you!
It's nice to see a vintage caravan getting some TLC.
A MASSIVE SHOUTOUT TO “BRET VIETS” for purchasing EVERYTHING needed to restore the roof. Not forgetting STEVE JOLLY and his 1 LITRE of paint. Would be lost without you.
Looking good, Karen! I’ve never had much success with paint sprayers either. For me, they’ve either blobby or inconsistent in their spraying.
Fascinating project.
Glad I'm not the only one🤦♀️
Great video Karen! Keep up the good work 👍
Thank you! Ups and downs, but getting there...
It might have been far easier to put a vinyl roof on. It was something I did regularly on several cars back in the 70's. It would definitely have been leak proof too. You're game for anything though.
I admire a Trier. 👍💯😃
Maybe that can be my backup if this fails🤣
It was very popular in the 70's. I'm not sure how easy, or inexpensive it would be today though.
All I can say is, it was a great way to cover up a scrappy roof, and leak proof too. I reckon it would add to the vintage look too! Good luck with the renovation. 😃👍
That looks fine. Spraying is hard the pros make it look easy
Husband says lightly sand between coats of paint will give you a better finish when using spray gun and roller
Your caravan is going to have a lot of character but that is what makes it yours.
Yes, character will be the best description🤣
I think you're doing really well with this...and you must be learning a lot. Waiting for paint to dry can be really boring but has to be done, as long as the job is robust it will be OK, I think it's called 'cottage finish'. :D. There is always T-cut as a paint smoother/polish as a final step, it might (?) help level out those runs a bit in terms of look if not in profile...but only when the paint is really hardened off!! :)
hahah yes, cottage finish with personality🤣Think I will need to revisit it.
@@TravellingK Keep up the Good Work. :)
Lol I love how u used a broom to get the tape across real kiwi right there
And the tape holding the roller onto some wood - rather than using a proper extension !
The kiwi way😜
Hi Karen just found this which is what i have to do... great job well done
Can you PLEASE tell me the products you used? The paint and the rubber stuff?
Love your naivety Karen. Trying to rub down rubber.. runs every where when spraying.. bet you wish you just used the roller after every where.. keep going don't give up
its looking great :) well done
Thank you Aaron!
Just use a good horse hair brush next time, lots of thinners in the paint to help it settle out on your surface and it will remove any brush strokes, and do 4 or 5 even coats. It will come out as if you sprayed it in a booth, like a glass finish. But hey, you gave it a go!
I think I need to look into this... I like the sound of that!!
God Karen you are so calm. Please tell me your secret, that feller of yours is one hell of a lucky guy. See you next time X
hahah why thank you Barrie!!
I've done the same thing.... layers upon layers. If she leaks after my efforts, I'm meant to sleep in a waterfall.
9:09 Yeah, it looked too thick :)
Dad used to use a bent (into a U) welding rod to mix/stir paint/solvent - and his test was how it ran off the rod when lifted out. I think it was thinned enough when it just spattered/splattered - i.e. beads/drips broke off the bottom of the dribbling paint.
Ah ok. Your dad sounds like he knew what he was doing!! Seriously more skill required than I realised.
@@TravellingK He was a motor mechanic - a proper one - he could do engines, gear boxes, body-work and painting.
He was no good with heights - 2 rungs up a ladder bothered him !
Stroooth mzz traveling k .. that was weapons at ten paces .. 😂😂😍😎😁
Your doing very well it must be nice to have somewhere to do the work. I should of waited until the video was finished, but if you gets a smaller roller with a sponge sleeve you will get a BETER finish
I do appreciate having this area to work in. And not too far from a hardware store (when it's open). Good to hear about the roller!
Excessive roof sealant is like Too much chocolate, it's not possible. Great work, but I've learnt that I should not buy a spray gun and stick to a roller. Good advice.
ha, nicely put!
Hi you need to really be doing that roof by using a small roller and then once rolled use a paintbrush but very Featherly just to take the pitlane out I think you will probably find it a lot more easier and you will get a even paint with no runs All the best from Terry keep up the good work
Hmmm that's good to hear! Think this might be the way I'll go.
Spray guns take a lot of skill to use successfully. Electric ones must be a nightmare as they don't start and stop instantly like proper spray guns. There's quite a skill in getting the paint thinned correctly. You also have to match the rate the paint comes out of the gun with the speed you move across the surface. Start moving before you start spraying. Stop spraying before you stop moving. Move at a constant speed and a constant distance from the surface you're spraying. Spraying requires several coats as you can't put it on 'thick' at all - otherwise in runs.
I'm going to guess a pro spraying would start with 2 coats of primer, 2 coats of undercoat, 2 or 3 coats of topcoat. Varnish after that could be an option ! with some rubbing down in between paint types ! But don't ask me, I'm only guessing !
Sheesh! So I did that half-a*sed version🤣
@@TravellingK I guess your only real mistake was not researching it enough beforehand to discover the difficulties first.
So you are saying it Looks good from a far, but far from good? Lol You are welcome. You too stay safe and healthy.
hahah exactly! Nicely put. Stay safe too!!
love sugar soap... when I am moving out of a rental, that is how I wash the walls.
Yes, isn't it handy!!
What is sugar soap?
Tried to use one of those electric paint guns to do a fence. The thing wasn't very successful. It splattered instead of sprayed the paint.
Yes, I found it splattered for me too!
@@TravellingK I gave up and binned the thing and used a brush instead
Ozito spray gun they are terrible stick with a good priced Wagner and you will have no probs Karen in the future great video :)
Karen are so patient and good natured. Keep at it. Are you planning to keep this caravan for your own use and sell the Bailey?
Thanks Jenny! I am currently planning to sell my Sterling and live in this for a while... see how it turns out first!
nice work m8, an the camera looks ok from here. bludy pay pal was plus $8! over my budget, sorry got to find me a project! you an yours stay safe an well eh!
I would recommend removing the windows and rebedding them with polyurethane sealer .
Minefield using a spray gun, first, electric sprayers do not produce enough pressure for something so big as your roof unless you dilute the Cantonese to it's very minimum, else, as you found, you will constantly block the nozzle, but stick with it, , The English Pennliner is proud of you ! x
Ah that's interesting to hear. I'm glad I tried it out... but now I know I'm not a fan of an electric strayer🤣
@@TravellingK If you are going to do any spraying of big panels you need an air compressor min 100 Ltr tank.
I’ve just watched the whole video, OMG, ask yourself, would you buy this caravan with the standard of work done on it as it stands?
I think you have missed the whole point of the exercise. Karen wanted to try out her DIY skills here and in doing so its often not just about the money side of things. I say good on her for giving it a go and once completed she will enjoy the real sense of achievement and pride. Try putting a price on that. :)
Karen is doing it to the best of her abiliies and we all admire her for her get up and go atitude, yes it may not be perfect but bet you couldn't do better, probably sat on your fat arse all day, surfing youtube & posting nasty comments on peoples videos is the limit of your physical abilities.
Just what everyone has said🤣This really is a learning project for me.
The elastomeric coating will probably need to be renewed every three years. It is probably the best product, along with the tape and the filler you put on.
Good to know!!
it must be a labor of love, I would have bought a used trailer and build it from scratch
Maybe that will be my next project😜If I've still got the buzz after this!
... and professional sprayers do it in a spray cabin, because a completly wind free enviroment is essential for an even covering.
Coach paint is best for jobs like that .give a nice smooth coat xxx
I don’t understand why you’re not using a flat paint stirrer....
Unless you are a professional a spray gun can be a chore. Good job.
Yeah... I'm not so keen to try it again either!
Spraying - did I spot some practice efforts on blue barrels in the background at 12:25 ?
Good spotting!
Any advice on what product to use for sealing the window.
No way that roof will leak. Good job.
Never mind .... at least you get FULL MARKS for EFFORT ..... Crack On ;-)
haha thanks Pete... I tried.
Might have been better to use foam brushes to get a smooth finish. I used them on my boat and the finish is brilliant
Oh that's good to know! I think I'm going to research about the best rollers and brushes for this...
Ye, it is not eary to sparypaint, so this is a good start.
Not sure I want to try again🤣
What size caravan is this??
You need to be about 300 mm away and do left to right swings of your arm turn the gun on and when you get to the end of your reach turn it off and carry on the process
Hmm ok, sounds like I need another go!
Do it right the first time , if you can't do it
Right do it wrong but just get it done
Use your arm more when spraying from side to side and only press the spray trigger while arm is moving - it’s difficult to get a good finish... without runs and orange peel 🤦♂️ looking good tho...
😊👍
Yes, this is good advice. Don't reverse direction with the sprayer running or the ends will receive more paint than the middle. It's a sort of pssssssssst psssssssssst psssssssst action. To be honest though, on a project of this size for a beginner I'd probably be brush painting with many well thinned coats.
It wasn't until I was editing that I saw just how badly I was using it🤣
Think I would have put a few Rivets it the roof first. (But hey stay safe)
Hope it all holds!!
Elastic seal systems are not supposed to be sanded.
I'm sure the directions on the can said to sand between coats... but really didn't seem to work.
I hate those electric sprayers, never had any luck with them.
Has anyone ?
Ah ok! So they have a reputation for being tricky?
@@TravellingK definitely, better off with an air compressor driven one.
only good for spraying a wooden fence really
@@allanmumby And not that good at that to be honest.
This is one of those videos which teaches you what not to do.
And you're one of those people who thinks he could do better, but would never attempt it.
ha yes, I'm more than willing to share my mistakes.
Many yrs. ago, did a small house trailer [caravan] the material was tar like had to use a trowel and took me 3 days. Yrs. latter it was new paint on and took an afternoon. Rolling on looks easier. The tars were black not great in hot weather.
Oh that's a contrast in time!! I did find the roller much more manageable...
I agree with an small air compressor and a spray gun. Electric spray guns are terrible and hard to use. Something else, spray painting outside is the worse. I know you have little choice.
Hi Karen, you are really doing a fantastic job on the roof and taking perfectionists care in doing so. I have used rubber sealant paint ( 2 coats) on my shed roof and it is guaranteed for 10 years. So far so good. Resists movement so it should be good for you. Keep up the good work.Just seen where you were sanding rubber paint. What idea is that?? No you cannot do that. Just leave it be to do its job. Who on earth told you to put anti rust paint onto rubber paint needs their head testing. Just wasting time and money on stuff you do not need. This turned to me me to be a crazy video!! You got my thumb down after all the thumbs up.
I'm sure the instructions said to sand🤣But yeah, didn't really work.
Good example of why people do apprenticeships
haha YES! Learn to do it right from professionals.
No such thing as ‘too excessive’ 🤣😂
hahah good!
You make you tube videos, but you do not watch you tube videos on how to spay paint ?
haha I watched 'how to' videos, but have learnt they make it looks easier than it is!
So all those traddies make it look so simple. Right???
haha YES! Guess they have more skill than me😜
Never ever use a pressure washer on a caravan
To use a spray-gun you have to have lots of lots of practice and training it’s not that simple, buy it and use it doesn’t work.
Most everything now a days is painted by robots..........👍🏴
if you started in one corner front, an dragged it over to the back, moved half an inch, an did the same thing again, all over, thats excessive m8!
With just the tape? haha, that would be excessive!!
I am certain like all the side panels and the roof panels they are aluminium. Rust proofing is for iron surfaces. So once you coat the roof in rubber why on earth waste money coating it with a this . Total waste of time and money spent on something you never need.
Karen, I previously said it was a money pit, sit down with your fella and ask him if he would put any more money into it, and ask him for his honest opinion if you should give up and sell it on. I know what I would do.
And not everything is about money.
Well it's her money and her project and it's non of your business...so you're opinions are irrelevent.
Luckily Hayden has the same experimental attitude as me😜
@@TravellingK ....as any good partner/husband would, I really can't understand why people feel the need to make comments like that...as if you're gonna take notice of some lonely internet troll like him...nah keep doing what you're doing Kaz, it's your project/dream and 99% of your subscribers are behind you all the way.😃
The quality of your sprayer is the problem, not your ability.
Ohhh that would be nice if it's true!!!
I could not watch anymore please please get lessons in spray painting. ALWAYS set your spray pattern on a test piece before doing the surface you are working on and NEVER do it in one coat
Rome wasn't built in a day. takes time karen
Guess I get impatient 🤣
Must be vain
How come?
Hi Karen
