Hi Nora, I do magic loop all the time and find that making the loop extremely big really helps. On the cord issues, been there done that with your crazy cord scenario. And yes, it's so frustrating that you almost want to give up. 2 points for perseverance. Tip: if you are down to the top / bottom of the hat try using not only 1 cord but 2 cords extended together especially with Knit Picks somewhat inflexible cords. This helps to offset one cord's twist with the other and makes it much easier to manage. Also, it allows the twist to happen away from your knitting and so less bothersome. Tip: Boil some water, pour into a safe large bowl, let sit for a few seconds to cool just a tad, then drop in your Knit Picks cord. Using a chop stick like tool, move the cord around until it softens, usually about 1-2 minutes. Take out (careful could be warm) using a towel and pull with hands towards the ends to help straighten the cord. This will help a lot. The cord eventually goes back to twisted but for the immediate task it softens the material and makes it much easier.
As another commentor noted, ChiaoGoo completely takes care of any magic loop issues. It's not the technique but the cords that are the problem. ChiaoGoo also offers a 3mm needle, it doesn't come with the standard set but can be bought separately. I want to give magic loop one more plus and that's doing 2 at a time socks. Once you are comfortable with magic loop doing 2 at a time socks is great. Like you said, you just want to knit. Well I don't seem to be able to keep track of round counts or stitch counts or whatever and inevitably one sock is different from another. 😢😢😢 To avoid such issues, I simply knit both at the same time. Yes I double the errors (if any) but I also have duplicate socks. So much more satisfying that when I'm done a pair, I'm done a pair. Happy knitting.
I feel this! The only way I will do magic loop is with Chiaogoo fixed circulars or if I need to use my interchangeable needles, I splurged and bought the knitters pride zen (the blue ones I can’t recall the name for) they’re memory free and fit the knit picks needles. Just don’t get the swivel, it has such as lip where the cord goes into the metal part that i get so frustrated i want to scream!!

For small circumferences you might like traveling loop which is a modified magic loop. With this technique you can still use a fixed 16in needle on something like the Musselburgh.

I don't like magic loop either! I tried it when I first started knitting and I almost gave up. For small circumferences I use 2 circular needles. I can't wrap my head around magic loop but 2 circs make sense to my brain. Love your videos, Nora!

I enjoy knitting the same thing more than once and do that a lot with simple projects. I buy a lot of single skeins of hand-dyed yarns to make shawls from. I often repeat patterns that are simple and use those as my "take along" knits I bring to the office to knit at lunch, travel with, etc.. I have home knits that are more complex and require me to reference a pattern more often, pay more attention, are larger, use multiple yarns at once, etc.. It helps me get through my one-off yarns while still working on the larger projects I dedicate more time towards.
Same! Leave the complex at home, take the simple bread & butter patterns on the go.

I actually really love the well-loved knits tutorial for 2x2 ribbing. I find it more similar to regular 1x1 tubular binding off and just as easy to memorize. It's far less clunky and better-looking than rearranging stitches, which I have also tried many times.

I was obsessed with the Musselburgh hats for the same reason (I had some fingering weight single skeins) but recently, I started holding them double (pulling from inside and outside of my cake) and doing a 1x1 rib hat. It works up so much quicker and I love the squish factor of the ribbed hat. I do the Purl Soho Classic Ribbed Hat with a few minor changes. I also worked up a Hibernate Hat by Summer Lee (LOOOVE her patterns!) holding my fingering weight double and it turned out so gorgeous too!! Just a couple other options if you want to change up your routine and work up all your single skeins.

The decrease section was a little confusing to me, too! What I ended up doing was just mirroring how I did the increases for the other end. There’s that section where you knit 3 plain rounds after all the evenly spaced increases and then do one last round of increasing. So I followed the same with the decrease side.. decrease the first time, then 3 plain rounds, then start decreasing every other round. So happy that yours is off the needles! I was making my first one for my hubby at the same time you started yours 😊

My go to easy cowl pattern is the Sky cowl free pattern on Ravelry. It came from a yarn store in Victoria BC. I originally bought a kit but now I buy the yarn and make solid colours. You need to use the Dropps Sky chainette yarn which turns out so nice. I use at least 2 balls but better with about 2.5 balls. 150 CO, first row is a purl row and then knit knit knit in the round until yarn runs out and CO very very loosely. It is the perfect cowl, drapes beautiful and I love it. So easy. I have used other yarn and it is too large you need the Dropps Sky.
I also purchased the Sky Cowl kit from Beehive Wool Shop in Victoria online. I loved how the Drops Sky yarn knit. I used all of the three balls of yarn in the kit. The yarn when knit is so squishy and soft. I love how long and versatile the Sky cowl is. I agree with you, this is a good option for an easy pattern to knit. Karen

Just so you know for the next time you make a Musselburgh (because you surely will make more!): the decrease section is the mirror/reverse of the increase section at the beginning. If you simply do what you did before in reverse, you'll be golden. I love the Orca colorway, your hat came out great. I personally love Magic Loop, and I hope you heed woxanna's suggestion about them! I agree with you: the Brooklyn Tweed tutorial for the Italian tubular bind off is magical: super helpful and easy to follow. Happy knitting! (P.S. I love Osi... adorable.)

As a new knitter, I've fallen down so many rabbit hole time sucks trying to find the answers to my knitting questions, which happens on the regular. Also, how are you so advanced as a new knitter? It's truly remarkable!! I'm in awe, girl! Do you have a person in your life that helps you when you need help? What are your go-to resources? Spill the beans, please!
I am so happy to share the tutorials that I've found helpful!! It can be hard to find just the right visual/verbal explanation in one place!! I wish I had a better answer for you as far as resources for when I get stuck. The truth is that I am simply very stubborn and go in to everything believing that I absolutely CAN do it and will try and fail until I manage to figure it out. It's also part of why I believe in my philosophy of "the imperfections are what make something so perfectly handmade." I enjoy learning and trying new things and I accept that the first time I do it, it will not be perfect! From there, I am open to failing and having the learning opportunity under my belt so that I can do better the next time.
My best advice is that if there is something you are feeling hesitant about or it is intimidating to you, schedule a time with yourself that is completely dedicated to figuring it out. Leading up to that moment, try and educate yourself on the topic by reading a few articles and watching a few different videos so that you are prepared with what to expect ahead of time. I think it's important to do those things without the actual project in your hands so that you don't feel tempted to start something you don't know how to undo. Then, sit down at a table or wherever you're comfortable (I literally always sit on the floor in my living room in front of the couch when I am trying a new technique that is scary to me. I only realized recently that this is something I do, but I think it helps me feel secure and like I have plenty of room to lay out my supplies). Make sure you have no distractions, I find it best to do these things when I am home alone or later at night when we are each taking time for our own hobby. And then just do it with the best tutorial you could find pulled up in front of you. If things aren't working, take a break and come back to it with a clear head. I wish I had a magical recipe that had a sure-fire end result, but this truly is my best advice for learning and advancing your new skill! I hope that's helpful!! 💛
I used to use DPNs (wood) for many years…as that’s how I learned and I didn’t like magic loop… until I got ChiaoGoo Red Lace fixed knitting needles. The cord makes ALL the difference. I prefer 40” over 32”.
No more dropping DPNs all the time. I now use magic loop for everything- socks, hats - all sizes, etc.
Magic Loop makes projects much more portable for me… can’t drop needles… can’t loose needles… don’t need to switch needles when decreasing.
The Sock head hat and Sock Head cowl (free on Ravelry, Kelly McLure) will give that mile of stockinette feel! Congrats on 20!

When I was beginning in crochet and knitting, I was very appreciative of the designers who put out free patterns that were well written because it enabled me to feel more successful as a beginner, and then it makes me more likely to go buy their other patterns now that I have more experience and want to access more fun techniques! Hi Nora. My preferred way of knitting small circumference is on two pairs of circular needles. I use interchangeables so I always put the right hand tip in correct size and the left hand tip in size a bit smaller. that way I don't need two sets of tips in the same size and it doesn't stretch the transitional stitch as magic loop does...

I just cannot use magic loop, I cannot make it work.
I am not crazy with DPNs either.
I use two 16”circular needles, kind of working flat on both half. I saw Knitty Natty show the technique in a video 1-2 years ago. I just love that technique and I use the write size needle for knitting and the other side of the circular needle is a size smaller, that way I can do it with the same kind of needles. I hope that helps for you next hat!
I hate magic loop, I've been knitting for about 13 years and I've never been able to wrap my head/hands around it. When I get to the end of a crown I break out the old DPN's and it is so much easier. You only have to make sure there isn't any laddering between the needles. There are plenty of tutorials on how to prevent this. I learn something new from you, as a newer knitter, every single episode. Keep keeping us entertained and educated.

For basic stockinette in the round patterns... Try PK's Penny Gloves. Sock-adjacent, on slightly larger needles. Also, check out the Berlin Scarf by Susanne Müller. It's not a one-skein project, but could easily be adapted for different yarn weights. I'm about to finish mine and it was so much fun to knit *literal* feet of stockinette in the round ☺

Well I’m glad I’m not alone!! Just a strange little formatting issue. When I have a problem with such a well known and popular pattern it honestly makes me feel so silly lol. Like I wonder how I can possibly be the first person to be confused by it. But I’m sure we’re not the only ones!!
I have a pattern called the Cozy Circle Crossbody which makes a circular crossbody purse using boucle! It also has sewing instructions for how to construct the whole purse and lining so it keeps it's shape and you don't have to worry about your things poking through the purse.

Same, I despise magic loop. When I knit a very small circumference like the Musselburgh ends I knit it flat until I’m comfortable to join the stitches then I join. I seam the inch or so and nobody notices! More often than not I knit socks flat too.

I recently made a pink Winter Clutch by petite knit, it has a lining and I'd also ordered the hardware from her (frame and chain), I really like it and use it a lot! The oslo hat is my favourite easy stockinette thing to make rather than musselburgh because you just get to long tail cast on and start knitting rather than having to do the pinhole cast on and increases at the start! 💗

I just finished my first Musselburgh hat. I knitted mine a total of 22” and it’s a perfect fit. I knitted 18.5” from the beginning until I started the decreasing. I did change to magic loop for the last 40 stitches. I used my US 3 on the interchangeable set. It worked great. I agree it is a long knit; however, it could be knitted in two colors making two hats in the end. 😊. I should have mentioned that I knit the AM at 7 stitches per inch gauge. I do love this pattern because of the different gauges and NO SWATCHING!
I’m currently working on the Oslo hat. I’m so impressed by the construction and pattern. I’m on the last 6” before decreasing for crown and already picking out my color for my next hat. My next challenge I’m trying to gear up for is the Sunday sweater. I’m still new to knitting. I have *cough-cough* 40 years with crochet. Wow, I feel old. 😊😊😊
You could do a double thickness cowl or scarf? For the cowl you can provisionally cast on, graft at the end. Look at doodle Cowls for inspo but doesn't have to be colourwork
OMG Nora! I grew up in Washington, CT!!! I've been watching you since Ep. 1 and knew you were in Connecticut, but not that you were THAT close to my old town (not that it's a big state, I suppose). Such a weird small world. Next time I'm back I need to check out Stars Hollow Yarns. Edit to add that if Dad's sweater grows more than you want, a couple minutes in the dryer can help since it's superwash. :)

Wow, your Dad’s sweater and boyfriend’s hat look so good! Perfect for the weather we’ve had lately. ❤ Perhaps a cowl or wrap might be a good TV knit project? Something that doesn’t rely on sizing or gauge too much. Or making pieces to join together later for a pillow or throw blanket. I love having one ball of yarn and a simple project like a crochet square (hoping to finish Sandra Paul’s Nature’s Walk blanket for my sister next week) in my work bag or for car rides on the weekend. And then in the evenings, I join my latest square to the growing blanket and it keeps me warm on cold evenings. I don’t think my sister will mind that her blanket kept me warm and thinking of her while I made it. I made her a bolster pillow last year and she said she keeps it next to her on her sofa and it makes her feel like I’m sitting next to her. ❤
Instead of doing magic loop, try using 2 circular needles. I don't like magic loop either and I always use 2 circular needles when I knit socks. Lots of tutorials on CZcams.
2 at a time on 2 circular needles -- clean and easy
Miles of stockinette in the round on an accessory: a tube scarf. You can join the ends if you want it to be an infinity scarf, or cast it off flat and add fringe to the ends. I want to do one with yarn scraps so it’s stripey.
I also hate magic loop so what I do is I use 2 dpns to hole my stitches then I have a third one to knit on. I prefer it and as long as you hold the yarn tight when you're going between needles you don't get laddering. You can also get dpns with a flexible middle, which helps when using them like this. Honestly, I only have the flexible dpns in one size so I hardly ever use them but they might work well for you if you turn out to prefer this method.
I do want to play with those flexis! I’m hoping to get a set of dpns at some point as I do really prefer that over magic loop

Knitty Natty has done a few Musselburgh and someone in her comments had a brilliant idea is that once you know the number of stitches that you need for the full circumference to cast on with a provisional cast on then knit to one end and decrease then turn around and start from the provisional cast on and knit until the decreases go again. They said that it was also a really good way of controlling the yarn usage.
Just an idea. Also, try putting the knitters pride blue cords (but not the swivel they suck) they work with the knit picks needles.

Another good episode. Maybe a good couch project would be the half and half triangle wrap. I find if I don’t wear it out it’s also pretty on the back of a couch as a throw that you can use for a warm shoulder wrap while watching a movie.

IMO ear warmers are way underrated!! I am MUCH more likely to grab an ear warmer than a hat and there are some really cute ones of all kinds and don’t require much yardage…would look so cute on you esp with you’re background in hair styling ❤
11:24 if you're going to do magic loop, you should try using HiyaHiya needles instead. The cables are super flexible.
I'm not a magic loop fan. However, if you don't like DPNs, I've seen people use 3 circular needles in a similar way that DPNs are used. Something I like to knit when I want a simple stockinette in the round project is a drawstring bag. It's a fantastic project because you can cast on any number you want and just knit knit knit until it's the length you want. Do a couple decreases, do a three needle bind off and all that is left is to thread a drawstring through the top. I have made so many drawstring bags that I have found there are a lot of ways to do the drawstring edge. 1. Knit several rounds of ribbing, any ribbing will work, (I prefer 2x1 or 2x3). Just make sure that unless they are even there are more knit stitches than purl. You will only see your drawstring over the purl stitches. 2. I have cast on using a needle 2 or more sizes larger than will be used for the body of the bag. Before I begin knitting, I thread my drawstring through all the cast on stitches. Then I knit all my stitches onto the desired size needle and continue on in the round. It is a little bit fiddly and the beginning working around the drawstring cord but after two or three rows that's not an issue anymore.
3. I have knit a few using a method I learned when knitting Two of Wands Folio Tote. You knit twice the length you want for your drawstring pocket. Then you told your knitting over and knit the cast on stitches along with the corresponding live stitch on the needles. This method is the most polished finish.
Hmmm... Now I'm thinking that comment was way to long and wordy.
So, I'll end by saying that I would be glad to write out a "pattern" for how I knit my drawstring bags if you are interested. They make fabulous gift bags! 🧶

I felt the same thing about the finished project Hackathon marathon whatever it’s name 😅 because this week I finished two big projects too. Just sat afterward (what should I do now) and then I decided to cast on another project and I’m working on it while watching your podcast and I love that New bag I really really wanted to work with Buckley. You inspired me to look at this Buckley because I did not look to it before.
Maybe I'm crazy, but whenever I work with superwash yarn, I block it by putting it in the washer and dryer (however you plan to wash it regularly) in order to get the right gauge. If I airdry it, it grows massively. But I base my project gauge on however the swatch responded to being machine washed and dried so it seems like it only makes sense to give the same treatment to the actual garment.
I think my ancestors would come back to haunt me if they found out I put a knit in the dryer 😂 superwash or not Hahah. It’s so funny, I am so well trained that I never even knew superwash was both washer and dryer safe! Good to know!
@@akaNoraKnits It depends on the yarn! I've worked with superwash yarn from Europe that did not respond well to machine washing (found out from the manufacturer after ruining a project that it was supposed to be used on a special wool cycle that my machine just doesn't have, though the yarn label didn't specify). But now I always test on my swatch first and the KnitPicks Swish yarn I use for baby stuff does great.
Good luck with your blocking! But if the sweater does grow too much, try putting your gauge swatch in the washer/dryer and see how it responds and if you get a gauge that is more suitable.
if your Musselburgh doesn't block out to the ideal size, I wouldn't give up on the pattern. I know the pattern offers multiple gauges but when you mentioned your gauge when you started the project it was pretty tight. I would increase your needle size. the nice thing about this hat is that since it ends up doubled its actually much nicer and softer over the ears if your gauge is a little bit more open than it would be if you were wearing it as a single layer fabric.
if it helps, for sock yarn I use a US 3, for sport weight a US 5, and for dk a US 6 or 7 even and I am a very loose knitter

Here are a couple of cute purse patterns. Your quest has led me to favourite these because they are so cute, and I really would love to make them one day. Lindal Täschlein by Wöldten is done with short rows to create a cute leaf design and would look great knit with Noro yarns. 317. Lady's Knitted Purse by Isabella Beeton is adorable and looks like it's knit using the entrelac technique, which I haven't done but would love to try. Super impressive job on the Dad sweater!! He will love having an heirloom sweater. I have made several of the Confetti Shawls by Jennifer Tipton, a free pattern on Ravelry. Takes one skein of sock yarn or any yarn you have around. Have paired the sock yarn with mohair and it was pretty too. Might be a good addition to the gift knit box since you have thrifted some single skeins. Anyway thanks for the Saturday brightener!

I have had success with using lantern moon cables with the knit picks interchangeables. The cables have a metal core like the chiaogoo needles. Ordered them from Amazon. Good luck!

A great stockinette in the round for me is Nuvem by Martina Behm, I have made one and am making another. The beginning of it is a bit fiddly, but once you get to the point of it all fitting on one circular needle, you are good to go! I started my second on as a travel project for when I flew to Utah with my sister last year.

I don't know if you have knit or yet ...and it's not stockinette but just as easy...the Saturday shrug is just ribbing. I knit one when is was new and everyone was knitting it and I will tell you in all honesty it is my most worn knit item. I want to make another one and make it at least an extra 4-6 inches long because I always fold the top down on the inside instead of just crunching it or pulling it down.
I had the same issue with the 3mm needle. They just aren't there in my sets!
I used to love magic round now I'm not enamoured and I don't know why. I think I forgot all the clever tricks.
I also fail to weigh yarn. I'm must just be a yarn chicken addict! I guess everyone needs some risk in their lives.
So frustrating!! The magic loop is helpful to me, but I definitely couldn’t knit a whole project that way. But I can definitely see going back and forth! Whatever you’re in the mood for!

I got the knitters pride nova platinas for Christmas and they have been really great! But I need to get a 3mm to complete the set and I’m looking into their cord options lol. I had tried the chiaogoos and was a little disappointed when the sound that they made bothered me! So strange, but I am glad I found something I like!!

You definitely cant do magic loop without a good cord. Maybe flexiflips are for you? I was also a crocheter to start and i only ever needed my set of clover hooks a handful of locking stitch markers , one or 2 needles, and a scissors. All in one tiny zipper pouch. Now that i knit as well i have mounds of needles, heaps of markers, a birds nest of extra cables and of course i started using better yarn and dying my own too so add the swift and winder and niddynoddy. And suddenly my tidy little pouch turned into a bursting cabinet.... oops😂
Hahahaha this is so relatable! I have a small box that stores all of my crochet things. I never needed more space than that! Just the other day, I told my boyfriend that I need to get new 3mm needles and he said, “don’t you already have like 50 different needles?” And I had to explain to him the difference between all of them 😂😂😂
@akaNoraKnits yes my husband doesnt get the need for more needles either.... meanwhile he collects wrenches like, well, knitting needles! All the sizes in all the lengths, with multiple extras because sometimes you need that spare one as well and you put one set in in the barn and one in the car and one in the garage......

I love the look of them so much, but I just know that I would never wear them! I can hardly even handle wearing a coat in the winter because I feel so restricted-I feel like the shrug would just tip me over the edge. They’re soooo cute though!!
Okay maybe someone can advise me. I have done Italian bind off once or twice and maybe I did it incorrectly. First of all o hated how time consuming it was. But I can handle that. The problem was that it had no stretch. I did watch a video recently where someone did their bind off very loosely and then when she got to the end she went back with a needle and pulled on each stitch to take out some slack. I thought…..really? It’s like doing a bind off twice! Ugh! So how do you do it and still have stretch at the end?
I think Italian bind-off is gonna go down in knitting history as a 2023 fad
I sooo hear you!! I have grown to enjoy the process of the Italian bind off, time-consuming as it may be!! I do think it's one of those things that requires balance, as the bind off will only ever be as stretchy as your sewn stitches allow it to be. I'm not sure that this will make sense in text, but this is my best tip:
1. Watch that Brooklyn Tweed tutorial (it simplifies the whole ordeal do wonderfully!)
2. When they say to pull your needle through and "snug-up" that yarn, observe the tension of the surrounding knit stitches. If you pull too tight, the yarn that you just snugged will shrink up and suck in the stitches around it. If you are too loose, it will appear like a big looping chunky bubble. If you can, slowly pull until you have a bar of yarn that matches the tension of your knit stitches.
3. It might be worth it to practice on a swatch. Personally, I would create a swatch of 30 stitches. Divide this into 3(10st) sections and start your bind off intentionally too tight for the first section. Then, leave it all too loose for the middle section. Finish by finding a tension somewhere in between and hopefully you will be able to find the muscle-memory that got you there (and even more importantly, what DIDN'T work!)

This may be a strange question, but how do you knit without looking?! I hear people say that but how do you know where the next stitch is you need to catch? lol
Not strange at all!! I wish I could explain it better and will maybe try to demonstrate in a video one day if I can figure out how to break it down. I know that Knitty Natty had done a video on the topic--I think it was based off of knitting superpowers or something like that? My best advice is to remember that it takes time to learn and you will feel slow and silly at first. But when I first started, I would try to feel the space between the stitches on my left needle using the tip of my right. I would then look down to check and make sure that I only had one stitch at the tip of my needle. Then I'd basically slowly knit that stitch and flick it off, look down and check myself and make sure I had done it right and repeat! Once I got comfortable, I'd try to add a second stitch and then a third, until I could knit a full round without looking! As always, practice makes better 😉

Also, I have massive respect for you being able to knit without looking. I am a rather slow, mindful knitter/crocheter and would probably mess things up if I didn`t look! That or I`d be moving at a snail`s pace.
She is a cockapoo!!! The best little doggo! Thank you--I was superrrrr slow when I first started knitting and then really tried to prioritize knitting without looking. It took some time and I was slow and awkward with it at first, but as things do with practice, it got easier! As I am writing this, I would almost attribute it to typing! I remember the first time I sat at a keyboard and had used one little finger to type each key, searching for the right letters all across the keyboard. Now, I can type fairly confidently and with few errors while only glancing down from time to time. It all just takes a little practice!!
