Nope, it's an international group, it started in Mali (touareg from Mali, they moved to Algeria because of the war then returned to Mali) later touareg from different countries joined them.
The band is half from Algeria and half from Mali, and the color they sing is shared between the two countries. Greetings to you and the brotherly suffering of Mali

Little tips: Imahrhan the main group leader is the real nephew of tinawiran group leader, Imahrhan are based in Algeria and we don't believe in the rubbish borders that France did during the French colony divide and rules
they are from southern algeria, northern mali and libya. the group is a mixture of Tuareg from 3 different countries. the first 3 of the group met at a festival in Algiers. since there was a war against the Tuaregans in Mali. They remained in exile in Algeria in Tamanrasset. afterwards they went to a training camp in Libya and the group got bigger. they went to war in Mali. after the war they stayed between mali and algeria and they enlarged the group. I know them personally .it's friends of a group of Algerian Tuareg from Tamanrasset who are my friends. and I worked with them on the pan-African festival. the first electric guitar of ibrahim the singer was given to him in Tamanrasset when he was in exile.

Tinariwen are from Azawad it’s the north of Mali. Actually Azawad is seeking for autodétermination since the 1960’s just after independence of Mali. Search about the Kel Tamashaq or Tuaregs rebellions!

Lol, most the people here they have wrong information about this band ,first they are from Mali and not from Algeria,, they left their country due to the circumstances of the war to Libya for work, and some of them entered the army in Libya and from Libya, they bought their first guitar from Tripoli city, and their musical career began from Libya to the world and then back came to Mali.
