Lawrence, Kansas and Ames, Iowa
Two fairly typical college towns in the American Midwest. Located just 269 miles from each other, or about a 4 hour drive. Why am I comparing them?
Well I’m from Lawrence.
And I’m Xander from the channel ARTexplains. I live in Ames.
Both: And we’re filming a collaboration!
Both Lawrence and Ames are dominated by the major universities in each city. Lawrence is the home of the University of Kansas, the largest university in Kansas, and Ames is the home of Iowa State University, the largest university in Iowa.
So yeah, overwhelmingly the largest employer in both cities are those two universities. After that, most workers in both towns work for either the city government, school district, or hospital in town.
Both Lawrence and Ames are relatively cheap places to live compared to the rest of the country, although Ames is 3 percent more expensive than Lawrence.
Both are consistently ranked on various lists of the top college towns to raise a family or retire. I don’t know, though, aren’t those lists fairly arbitrary? Yeah, I think those lists are pretty much meaningless.
Both are about the exact same distance from major urban centers. Lawrence is short drive west from Kansas City, and Ames is a short drive north from Des Moines.
Both cities have similar, continental climates, although Lawrence gets more precipitation than Ames, and since Ames is further north it gets colder and gets more snowfall than Lawrence.
Both cities are on the prairie, in areas where lots of agriculture is going on. Farmers represent. Wheat tends to be more common around Lawrence, and not to sound corny, but corn is all around us in Ames.
Both cities were founded during the Civil War Era. Kansas in 1854, and Ames in 1864. Now, Lawrence had a much more chaotic first few years compared to Ames. It started with the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, a law which said the people living in Kansas and Nebraska territories could vote on whether they wanted slavery to be legal or not when they voted for statehood. This idea of popular sovereignty to determine whether or not Kansas would be a slave state or not caused a flood of Americans to migrate there. Many of the first settlers of Lawrence were Free Staters, or those who wanted Kansas to be a free state. However, due to developing a reputation as a Free Stater hotbed, Lawrence became a huge target for pro-slavery bushwhackers, who raided the town multiple times, most famously during the Lawrence Massacre, aka Quantrill’s Raid. The violence in Lawrence and around the state was so bad it became known as Bleeding Kansas.
Uh, yeah, Ames was pretty quiet and chill in its early years. It was pretty much just a railroad crossing.
Lawrence has a lot more people living there than Ames. Lawrence recently crossed the 100,000 mark, while Ames has around 67,000 people.
Ames has lower taxes than Lawrence. We just pay a 7% sales tax rate and we don’t pay taxes on groceries like you silly Kansans.
Yeah we pay taxes on groceries and over a 9% sales tax. But property taxes are a little lower in Lawrence so there’s that.
Ames has more residents with bachelor’s degrees and a higher graduation rate than Lawrence. Ames also has a lower unemployment rate currently than Lawrence.
Are you sure about that, Xander? It’s pretty low here. It’s 3.3%.
Yeah, it’s 2.1% in Ames.
Ames has significantly better air quality than Lawrence.
Lawrence has less poverty than Ames.
Sooo, which is better? Lawrence or Ames?
Mr. Beat Ames my aunt life in that state
Fair enough :D
Well I've never been to Ames, and I've just barely been to Lawrence (that is, I've gone past it on I-70). Still, I vote for Lawrence simply because it's in Kansas, my favorite state (even though I'm actually from Indiana). However, my favorite part of Kansas is actually the far west, far away from Lawrence.
The only reason why I like Western Kansas is because it's closer to Colorado.
Mr. Beat Lawerence. Kansas all the way
As a Norwegian who adores American culture (NOT pop-culture), I love these videos, Mr. Beat! I feel like I get a glimpse of the "real" America.
That means a lot. Thanks :) And I do think we come across as your stereotypical American Midwesterners
Speaking of Norwegian, nearby Ames is Story City, a place full of Scandinavian decendants.
Pop culture can get toxic
I lived in Des Moines for a year, so I'm also biased toward Ames. But I'm a Hawkeyes fan so I'm biased against ISU. Hmm....
Exactly.
But we can all agree, at least we're not Nebraska.
Hawks!!
🔶⚫️🔶⚫️🔶
I like Iowa state better, however I'm probably going out of state so I don't care that much. Des Moines gang!
Huxley raised, boo Iowa, go Cyclones.
Treading on thin water there
Sounds like something you might put on a headstone- "At least I am not in Nebraska".
Compare Pullman and Corvallis! That would be interesting.
Zack yes that would be awesome, I live in Pullman, but I want to visit Corvallis so bad.
Just spent an idyllic day in McFarland Park in Ames. Drove down from Mpls to visit granddaughter and family. I wish we had known about the butterfly preserve. Alice would have loved that. We’ll be back. Another great video! How about contrasting Minnesota and Iowa. MikeinMinnesota
How about Iowa and Missouri?
@@iammrbeat good idea, considering you’re likely to compare Arkansas & Louisiana
@@iammrbeat Iowa and Minnesota I think are closer related, so I agree Iowa and Minnesota would be a great one
I grew up and still live in a town 15 miles west of Ames but I just completed my first year at Iowa State and I’ve been a Cyclone fan my whole life. Ames is a great place to live and I can easily see myself staying for a career and to raise a family
I studied at KU 26 years ago. You know which town my vote will cast to, haha. Lawrence has changed a lot. I cannot believe its population has reached 100k. McCollum was gone. All Stuffer Place buildings were gone where I lived for 5 years. I missed the stone bench under Campanelli where I spent a lot of time on reading and enjoying beautiful scene.
All my place ideas for comparison videos
>The '-stan' nations
>ASEAN
>Catalonia compared to the rest of Spain
>North American countries
>South American countries
>the Chinese provinces
>the Indian states
>the US states
>African countries
>Middle East countries
>The EU
>the German states
That's quite the epic list you got there.
What about Michigan vs Ohio
@@iammrbeat about Mexican state
Roooooock Chaaaaaaaaaaaaalk Kkkkkkkkk Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Rock call baby
PurpleKU77 Rock chalk jay hawk go KU!
HELL YEA!!
Great video! as always Mr Beat I like the idea of comparing Omaha & Des Monies or perhaps Iowa City vs Madison two other major college towns like Lawrence & Ames.
Honestly I like seeing this really specific content.
You didn’t mention how James Naismith has lived in lawrence
I'm moving to Lawrence this summer... sooo excited.. Rock Chalk Jayhawk KU ;)
You'll love it here
Your sense of humor is so quintessentially Midwestern! Your deadpan delivery reminds me of Joel Hodgson from Mystery Science Theater 3000
Very informative about both cities. Well, I can't say one is really better than another here.
Evenly matched, eh? Interesting. I always just assumed my city was better. ha!
I would’ve compared KU to MU. That’s a big rivalry there
Not as big as it used to be. Kansas vs. Missouri probably should come down the line, though
Mr. Beat idk, I’m a Kansas City native and it still is pretty big at least amongst the people here.
When Mizzou turned tail and ran away that pretty much ended it. Plus, the Union won and Quantrill died, so there!
You should do Minneapolis and St. Paul compared.
Grew up in Topeka (15 miles or so West of Lawrence) and would have a great time every time I would visit. Surprise there was no shoutout for the Hawk or Grinter farm!
I had no idea this video existed and I’ve been watching this channel for awhile. That is for the late “surprise”! Also, is that sound effect when an arrow and name appears from the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild? It sounds exactly like the equip sound effect.
This is very good video. Lawrence is a lovely town indeed. I have no problem living there. However in my humble opinion, Ames is better. Ames is only 3,4 hours away from Twin cities, MN. With lots of direct flights to Asia and Europe. And of course you have mall of America.
Good video!!! How about a video comparing Manhattan, KS, with Lawrence, KS????
James Bednar Yeah, or NDSU vs SDSU :)
I went to Pickney Elementary when I was young in Lawrence Kansas! Such a nice town to grow up in and the people there are top notch and so friendly! I live in North Carolina now, but always think of Lawrence. I miss Joes Donuts and Yello Sub! Making me want to move haha.
Yellow Sub is still around, but not Joe's.
I was listening to your videos while I'm at work..... And see this.
I work for the Memorial Unions at KU omg.
"At least I'm not from Nebraska." I am disgusted. Also, could you do a video comparing the State Capitals of states. And, can you please do a Nebraska and Iowa comparison video please.
I'm currently at college in Lincoln, NE and both Ames and Lawrence look much better than Lincoln despite it having nearly 3 times the population of Lawrence.
I totally disagree with your last sentence... Im a KU student. The first time I come to America was come to Lawrence, I see this small town is totally different than what I saw in the Hollywood movies. I was pretty sad that time..Until I went to Ames to visit my friend, I guess the students there might be feel worse than me. Ames looks like rural compare to Lawrence. But but but, when I went to another famous college town Lincoln, Nebraska. Shit, why my Kansan friends all told me there are only corns in Nebraska??? Lincoln is much much better than both Lawrence and Ames!
You should compare State College, PA and Morgantown, WV.
Cant believe you missed Sylas and Maddy's. Literally the best ice cream in the US.
So true!
As some from Ames it’s feels weird too see someone discuss my hometown on such a notable channels
I love how Mr. Beats burrito experience segued Into "an explosive fact" 😂
I am from Lawrence LFK
You should do a video on a place called Crestview FL, it has the most important air Force Base, one of the highest places in Florida, and many native American origins like a old native American cabin it's a pretty sweet place in my opinion
sounds like trash..
@@legalfictionnaturalfact3969 why you bully 14 year old me
@@vcthedank why are you crying about being "bullied" by a 9 year old? lol. military is for suckers. steer clear.
Seeing this video, will you do a video on Lecompton?
Well I did mention it in my Bleediny Kansas video. :)
Ames has Great Plains Pizza and Hickory Park. So, Ames wins. No contest.
That last line was true though, everyone wins because neither is in Nebraska.
Like how y'all didn't mention anything about y'all's football program
Ames' air quality being better seems slightly suspect given there's a higher than average chance of hog manure winds to cover the town regularly. Although the Lawrence coal plant probably does it's share to even that out.
+BTW urban legend, burrito king's green burrito is just weed.
Surprisingly, a lower unemployment rate doesn't always mean good. If the unemployment rate is too low, then companies cannot find enough workers, causing lowered production.
This is true. So LAWRENCE WINS. MWHAHAHAHAHAHA. But seriously, you are correct.
higher unemployment means companies can lower wages because they can always find someone new
Ames resident here.
Xander is a jabroni. He mentioned music venues no one really goes to, when he could have talked about the M-shop and then Outlaws for live country.
For food, he did name a lot of great places, but putting Jeff’s on there is silly. Especially when you consider there’s a Jeff’s in Manhattan, Kansas anyways! Jeff’s is a C tier place when you’re drunk. Es Tas or the food carts like Fajita Man should’ve been on the list instead of Jeff’s.
You guys should have talked more about student life on the campuses too. Like how VEISHA was shut down, how ISU reeled in tailgating this year upsetting ALOT of students. You guys could have talked about how many students live in school housing vs how many live off campus.
Also, Ames consistently makes the top 20 drunkest cities in America, mostly because of the students. You guys could’ve talked about the college bars and for example in Ames all the bars clustered around Welch Ave.
Who is the jabroni?
Shannon Beat Xander is the jabroni, not Mr. Beat.
Glad to hear your perspective! Yeah, there were a few things I left out, for sure. Two other things I left out were political leanings and how the downtown in Ames is separate from the college, whereas in Lawrence the downtown is pretty close to the college. Oh, and I had to Google Jabroni lol. Thanks for watching.
Mr. Beat I’m sure Xander is a great guy, but my experience going to Iowa State and working Ames must be very different from his experiences in Ames.
Ps, I’m biased towards Es Tas cause I worked there, but it’s definitely the best place in town to get a taco. But I stand by the opinion that Jeff’s is garbage, it’s pizza is reminiscent of S’barro mall pizza.
Also, in my experience Ames had gotten more violent over the last few years too. Several stabbings, a few shootings, and more break ins and vandalism.
Another random thing I thought about too, we have ‘Junkers’. Since Iowa is one of the few states that has a 5 cent deposit on cans, so ‘Junkers’ will come through and pick up cans, even waking me up digging through my trash looking for cans. They then take those cans to HyVee or Walmart or whatever to get 5 cent per can.
Keep up the good work Mr. Beat!
This is so dope
Do a video on Athens, GA. Home of the University of Georgia, the first state charted university in America!
Have you done Tucson vs Phoenix?
Lawrence is clearly better because it is only 993 miles away from me compared to Ames's 1,163 miles(Wait does that mean i can like a depressed american town better than London just because it's close to me?) Well the evidence actually did show me that lawrence is better. But both are growing at a high rate and i'd both want to live in those.
If anyone is wondering, it looks like Beat is behind the college dorms. Giant brick buildings, cannot miss them. Iowa St. On the drive towards 23rd. Beautiful town, really.
Thank you for the comparison. Please do lawrence, ks and columbia, mo. KU vs MU. The ultimate battle. Well, i graduated from MU. Once a tiger, always a tiger. 😜
Chicago and New York Compared
When will you do Los Angeles and New York City compared???
Over the summer some time.
i would move to the warmer state :D because the cold gets old
i want a burrito
Burrito King is your best bang for your buck. Regarding a warmer state, I say you move to Kansas so we can go to Burrito King together.
Texas....good tex mex
Plz Do Vermont And New Hampshire Compared
Look for it to come in the coming months. What city do you live in again? Was it Burlington?
St. albans VT
I live in Iowa and go to Lawrence to catch the only train there. Which is direct to LA and many southwestern towns and cities. The SouthWest Chief on Amtrak's Santa Fe route. It's free and safe parking at this middle of the night stop for the only once a day very popular train. Yes it's between the major cities of Kansas City and Topeka. And the Trump government is trying to ruin it and get rid of it. But it remains fun to ride, comfortable. And the only transportation between the towns on the line. No airline can serve the 220 possible stops or trips you can use this train for. Ames being in Iowa has a republican governor and has rejected having any rail passenger services. The transportation program is controlled by the Koch brothers that are anti rail. They spend 3 billion a year on anything but rail. Ports, airports and roads NO trains. They are taxed in Iowa. Being private businesses. So Lawrence is a better place.
According to the 2020 census Lawrence has a population of 95,000 and Ames has a population of 66,000.
What's so wrong with Nebraska?
Nothing at all. We just wanted to pick on it since it was "between" Kansas and Iowa. I loved living in Omaha. To be honest, I think it's better than Kansas City. :)
You had Missouri. Better yet, because they stole KCK's deserved reputation as Kansas City.
And Nebraska has chanting seminarians with snow cannons, so don't even dare.
Nebraska pretends to have all the corn, when Iowa out produces Nebraska over 2 to 1.
Nolan Hanson they still have the seminarians with snow cannons.
You're just like me, I'm in to Medium- Big cities a lot and I love exploring them, I'm from KC and I honestly think it is totally overrated! It's fun but I just think its vibrancy and downtown is really boring and dead and you can't find much foot traffic unless you go to the plaza. I think Omaha's downtown feels bigger and more vibrant and urban then Kc's even though it's a much smaller city. I love Omaha for its size. Reminds me of Madison. (another great city)
You should do comparing Cedar Rapids and Lincoln.
If you ever do an Iowa compared to another state, could you mention some of the inventions like sliced bread or trampoline? Also the only UNESCO city of literature in North America (Iowa City).
Electric Needle Room clinched it for Lawrence.
Meanwhile from Nebraska....
Kaden Lindsay Nebraska is a lovely state filled with kind people and a nice tranquil nature.
Love from Connecticut :)
Lawrence Free State High School class of 2012, did you grow up in LFK or did you go to KU here?
Went to KU moved away and lived three different places. Came back and here we are to raise our family. :)
@@iammrbeat I moved away recently to be closer to my grandmother in Illinois, but I still have lots of love for the town that raised me through school and my early 20's. I'm glad you love it there too.
I live in Lawrence, and grew up in Huxley. About 8 miles from Ames. Not much difference in my opinion.
Ames actually has the lowest unemployment rate in the whole country with a meager 1.7% now
Wait do you still live in Lawrence 5 years later??? I’ve lived here all 19 years of my life and never knew you were from here!
But yes Lawrence is Beautiful.
Eyyy I know Matt
I like the ending
you from Nebraska?
I had literally never heard of Ames before today. I heard of Lawrence because my old boss lives there.
gotta put that plug in for your band dontcha mr beat?
You're the first to notice. But yeah. Obviously
Cost of living in Ames tends to be high compared to average wages there. Look at the rents.
Hickory park in Ames is amazing. But I live in Iowa, and biased towards Iowa. It's a great state
Imagine thinking Lawrence isn't the best college town in America.
is there a sarcasm implied because I don't get it quiet well
Kansas doesn't button the top button on our polo's.
Been to both, I prefer Ames.
Please do Kansas City MO and KCKC
Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas
I'm literally a nobody, but I'd do Univeristy of Northern Iowa vs Lawrence any day. You haven't seen a true college town yet until then.
Good shit m8
Is Your Friend still in Lawrence?
What no Great Plains Sauce and dough mention at Iowa State - best pizza ever?
Hm...
Eu4 vs Hoi4
(games)
Macky Cabangon Drew Durnil and isorrow ruined HOI4
Now how do Lawrence and Manhattan KS compare?
Thumbs down to Manhattan Lol, football is better in Manhattan but thats it
Not to be rude but there’s lots of corn in Kansas to especially around Kansas city and Lawrence the cities that you were talking about ever been down US 59 into Lawrence all of those fields are corn

Nice. Well hopefully you dig the vid. It comes out Friday.

How about Lawrence Kansas vs Lawrence mass
Lol, you for sure mentioned KU basketball but no mention of the red headed step-child that is KU football
What do you mean at least its not Nebraska? Go Huskers!
kmsimedia I didn't understand this either! :)
You know I love Nebraska!
GBR!!!
I’m from Kansas in Bonner
I am from Lawrence
So as someone who’s roughly inbetween (Omaha Metro) and looking at both for colleges I like Lawrence slightly better because it’s more interlinked with KC Ames is close but separate to DM. Also Kansas sports are good IA st sucks. Also burnt yellow and maroon sucks compared to royal blue and gold.
