This is the second video in my girlfriends adventure through the Half-Life series. After having a blast with the original Half-Life last week, she wasted no time diving right into the sequel. A lot's changed in the world since her last adventure with Gordon, but getting to play them so close together was a good opportunity to really appreciate the leaps gaming made from 1998 to 2004. She's been having a lot of fun with these games, and the only bad thing there is to say is that there aren't more of them. For now she's stuck waiting on pins and needles for Half-Life 3 with the rest of us.

@@desertman88 We're talking about how it stands on its own considerably better comparing to games from those years. Go look at other 2004 games and see if they're any better visually and interactively.
@@desertman88 The gameplay in HL2 was a complete step down from HL1. I actually played them in reverse and much more preferred Half-Life 1's gameplay, overall tone, and themes. HL2 was more about valve circle jerking their annoying physics puzzles and facial animations so much that they forgot to make the game fun.
@@queuedjar4578 I played them in reverse as well, but I HATED playing HL1. I later played Black Mesa (the remake of HL1) and it felt way better and fixed so many of my gripes with the original. I wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that HL2 is a step down from HL1. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it as well though.
Gosh, when I watched her get stuck at that 2 rails segment in the citadel - I remembered my first ever play through of the game. I spent like good 30 mins laying down in the wrong chamber and getting my butt zapped to a crisp. I thought it was my fault.

I have a feeling that new to games people have pretty common pitfalls. At that time, I assumed too often that I'm dying due to me doing something too slow or inaccurate instead of concluding that the player was simply meant to go the other way.

Hell. Yeah. She needs to play the Episodes, then Black Mesa, then Entropy Zero 2 to really round out the series and the story.

Fun fact: Stasis isn't a waiting game for someone. It's like being put under for a surgery. You fall asleep, and to you, you wake right back up as if it had just happened 5 seconds ago. So to Gordon, it felt more like 20 seconds than 20 years.

Her not playing Blue Shift and Opposing Force is bad enough, but don't you dare NOT let her play Episode 1&2!
Half-Life Alyx and then Hunt Down The Freeman for the big half-life fan disappointment cherry on top.
I wouldn't say it's crucial to play them tbh, enjoyed the for the gunplay but the story itself of both can be explained in about 10 minutes.
i just realized half life 2 was released in 2004. it's been 20 freaking years, valve. must we wait 30 years for valve to learn to count to 3?

At this point HL2 is so legendary they are probably physically incapable of making a game even half as revolutionary. Kinda like winning a game of pool and declaring yourself champion of all time and retiring lol
@@skeetsmcgrew3282 i agree tbh, and i think the alyx game is proof. it was fun... but nowhere near the level of careful worldbuilding and game design as hl2, it just feels like more than it is because vr as a medium is so much more immersive.
i mean, valve did rebuilt HL2 from scratch twice because it was "not that good", so who knows how many times they're rebuilding HL3?

Nah. The next game will probably be called Half Life Alyx 2, and the one after that Half Life: Gordon. Eventually they might make Half Life: Limit and Half-Life Infinity, before they figure out Half Life: Base 10.

The only sad thing of all this, it's that the first guard she met in Half Life isn't even Barney but some random guard. You can see Barney banging on the security door on the prologue on your way to Sector-C. But he still owes us all a beer.

@@Nacil_54I actually wonder if they’ll play Decay as originally intended (fully co-op) or wait until “Solo Mission” releases (it’s a rework of Decay to make it fully single player, it’s coming to Steam in the near future, there’s even a demo out now).
@@BloodRedFox2008 yeah I played the demo a year and a half ago, but you can play the co-op on pc, either as a mod or emulation.

I'd love to see a video on Half Life: Alyx as well. It's obviously understandable if it's not possible for one reason or another, but I think it'd be incredibly interesting to see tarny tackle a VR game, especially if it's the best one there is!

The hype was so insane on the old forums.
It wasn't just the standard "Can't wait, this will be so good." it was "Is this technically possible?" because it wasn't just "Half Life 2", it was also a brand new game engine that was claiming to do things that we had seen fail before (Trespasser).
People where not just "hyped" they where in "awe" just looking at it.

Do you guys have a VR headset? If so, would love to see you put her through Half-Life: Alyx. If not, then i highly recommend playing the Entropy: Zero games once she finishes episode 1 & 2. They are actually some incredible mods, especially the sequel.

I got emotional watching this. Half-Life 2 was not only beautiful as a game for its time, but it had beautiful code too. I've had paying gigs writing code using the SDK that Valve published with the game. I remember being wowed at seeing the object code for a bullet and a water bullet. The water bullet is based on bullet, but one is deleted and the other spawned when bullets travel in and out of the water. The water bullet has a trail of bubbles. Still stuck in my memory after all the years. Keep up the great work!

My excellent memory makes it difficult for me to ever replay games, but it is wonderful to watch your girlfriend's experience with them.

Its more disappointing than you think, not many have noticed or pointed out one game breaking detail. My immersion was ruined instantly when i saw kleiner gman and magnusson. Those ties... I don't think i can view half life the same 😭. We cant let this slide, all those who were horrified by the RIDICULOUS TIES are no longer the same. Valve needs to address this RIGHT NOW IM SO ANGRY!!! REMOV E KLEINER GMAN AND ALL TIES FROM EVERYTHING!!!!

Always nice to see Tarny's game literacy evolve.
In Half-Life 1 I remember recruiting a lot of guards to help me through areas. Keeping them all alive until I'm forced to leave them behind. Though sometimes I could come back and open the way for them to keep following me. Either it was Half-Life or Black Mesa. Though I'm leaning towards Black-Mesa.
The other Half-Life spin offs are good too. Opposing Force and Blue Shift. Blue Shift has you playing as one of the guards. I think it's the one you pass on the tram in the beginning, banging on a door. In Opposing Force you play as one of the soldiers.
The early office sections were great how you could amass a small army of them.

It's so nice to see her have the same reactions as we all likely did (I know I did) on the very first playthrough. It brings back good memories and shows Valve really does make insanely good, timeless games and that it's not just my nostalgia.
I was seven when Half-Life 2 came out, I'm 27 now and I'm STILL waiting for HL3. The grind never ends.

The best intro to a game and best sequel too. It's really great seeing someone playing through this for the first time. Plus, her reactions to everything as she progresses, is really endearing but also very nostalgic.
It's so wholesome watching someone experience all the story beats for the very first time. I'd forgotten how much impact each section has. Wonderful to see her having such a good time with this game, and seeing it through the eyes of an inexperienced gamer. She's having so much fun!
It's so fun watching her relive all these moments that were so special for so many of us. I'll subscribe if you promise to have her play the episodes as well!

Blue Shift especially, it’s one of the few pieces of HL media to have a happy ending, and let’s you know just how capable Barney is.

Had a smile on my face the entire time I watched this. Half Life 2 is still one of my favorite games to this day, it was great hearing her reaction to everything. Can't wait to see what she thinks of the episodes. And I also try to protect my antlions and swear vengeance on anyone who hurts them, so I can relate.
Also, you need to show her all the times you can spot G-Man watching you throughout the game. Really ups the creepy factor once you realize he's following you.

I named one of my antlions Steve too! I named them Red, Tiger, Stinger and Steve, based on the four different skins they can have, because my first batch of antlions (at least that when I took a good look at them for the first time) happened to be one of each variant.
