  • Here we show our attempt to splint a broken wing on one of our racing pigeons. The break is a bad one and not likely to heal properly but we are going to give it a try as this is one of our favorite racing pigeons!

    Found a little injured dove today. Well, it found me. It was waiting right beside my car after work. It looks like it has a broken wing. I will try to check it out tomorrow and hopefully I'll be able to do something like this. Worth a try. I should really learn this, injured birds always seem to find their way to me. It's quite strange.

    It doesn't appear to be as badly broken like this bird here.
    However - after watching this video - I don't feel confident enough to make this repair. Plus - you had another person helping you.

I'm scared to try this by myself and I found a guy who used to race pigeons to take her in a few days. Should I splint her now? Maybe check for compound fracture and if it's not, at least coban it to her body? Thanks. I hope you see this.

    While riding my bike during the evening in South Florida, I saw a Ring Neck Dove get hit by a car and then barely dodge traffic while trying to get away. It appeared to have a broken wing and foot. As the traffic light changed from Green to Red, I ran into the street to save it. I took the bird home, where I wrapped it in a towel and left it food and water on a screened porch. The next day, the Dove was out of the towel and moving around. I called the nearest Wildlife Rescue. They told me If I could take the bird there and within 48 hours, a Vet would look at it. I was afraid they might euthanize it, so I asked them if I could take it to a Vet and rehabilitate it at home. They supplied me with a list of phone numbers of Vets. I called and found a Vet that specialized in birds, only to be told it is illegal to habilitate a wild bird and they would not help. I then took it to the Wildlife Rescue, only to find out Ring Neck Doves are invasive species. So will they euthanize the bird or will it be caged for the rest of its life? Did I make the right decision? Are there any other options?

I can’t believe you had him still 2 years later that’s amazing haha! I bet he loves his life! I was in the same situation- wildlife rescues weren’t taking birds and one localized one had reviews of euthanizing. I really didn’t want to see that happen either since the one I found is strong and avian vet speculated he got attacked

    Going down a CZcams rabbit hole looking for ideas to make my current and fourth unofficial feral-foster (since I started backyard birding in 2019) more comfortable. Afraid they've injured or broken their wing and that's a completely new one for me; they always seem to choose my house to shelter near cause the neighborhood flock knows I have the good seed and water haha. ;)
    "Archie" appears to have a broken or injured wing. It hangs limp and drags on the ground as he struts through the yard during the day, and he can't fly far or well the few times he's made it over the fence and disappeared for a day or two before he comes back. Seems like a good sign he's managing short bursts of flight, but I worry about the limp wing dragging through the landscaping rock we've got in AZ jolting that injury or break. Not something I had to worry about with "Montey" (sick and spent the last weeks/days with me), "Maxx" (just young and felt safe in my yard til ready and grown) or "Cooper" (sick + probable neurological issues (was heartbroken when he just disappeared one day and never came back)).
    Could a sock worn in a bit of a sweater-like fashion work to hold Archie's limp wing in a more natural, protected position short-term while I'm monitoring him as he's free to do his thing during the day?
    Edit: Heh, sorry about the length, never can tell how long these comments end up being when posting on mobile. :')

    Sir need your help
    I found a pigeon past year with a broken wing but I didn't knew the exact procedure to heal it
    So I went to various people who have pegions. These people responded that it's wing is broken and it will die in upcoming months.
    After such thoughts I removed idea of giving that pegion to them and tried to connect with doctors, which further turned into disappointment. No one really cares.
    So I kept that pegion with me and provided first aid to it. It had same kind of swollen part. After few days that patch recovered. But still it can't fly.
    It has been one year and it's enjoying time with me, playing and doing fun tricks with me.
    Saw your video, should I give a try once with this procedure?

      Hi; my dog lay down next to an injured ash red pigeon 10 days ago who was attempting to get help. Took him to an avian vet because the local wild bird fund in Manhattan had numerous reports of people who brought eating and drinking birds in they discovered to be euthanized the same day so I wasn’t going they route- I named him Henry and brought him to the vet. The vet wrapped his wing, and speculated a possible hawk injury. Anyway, she also gave me metacam and her nurse trained me to give it in a syringe to his mouth and the dosage (once a day.) the swelling is totally down, and we rebqndaged the wing. When we found him (like I said my golden initially found him right outside my doorman’s post), he could only try to fly up a few feet, and his wing dropped. The vet wants the bandage on another two weeks which would mean 5 weeks and she even thought that he may need a bandage longer. I never yet w bird but he seems happy energetic and has access to seeds and fresh water. I never knew pigeons were so affectionate and cute much like this video. It must be hard to be a bird and not fly, I talk to him and cuddle him which he likes and he plays hide and seek with a towel around him. I also got him a cage where he can walk but not try to fly since that’s what the Avian vet recommended no flying or jumping or perching yet. The vet made it sound like Henry may need a full 8 weeks but I’m hoping he won’t need it bandaged after 4/5 total

      You could feel along the length of the bone to determine if there is a break. If there is a break you will need to set the bone. If there is no break in the wing then it will likely heal just fine on its own. Another good solution is to cut holes in a sock and use it to hold the wing steady while it heals. Pull the sock on the bird and situated it’s feet through the cut holes and of course cut the toe end of the sock for its tail to extend through. Good luck

If you know what kind of bird it is you can offer the right type of food items to it (e.g. granivorous vs insectivorous). Hard to know what to do about the wing if you are unable to handle it. It is interesting to me to do his PT exercises (painful for him) so he’s back on the Metacam for inflammation while we get flex into the wrist! He’s really a cut bird. Could a broken pigeon wing grow back or get attached back again? My pigeon's wing snapped, I patched it up after putting it back in its place, and the pogeon was already infected and it seems that's why the wing bone snapped so easily. Pigeon is 20 to 30 days old, still a young pigeon not yet flying, and after I changed the patch yesterday I noticed that the bone was dislocated once again, and even worse, it was rotting away. I got so worried, tried to patch it back again, luckily km giving him antibiotics which seem to be dealing with the infection well, since other wounds on his body seem to be healing nicely, so I just repatched the wing and hope for the best. The problem is when I try patching up his wing, he wouldn't sit still, which made matters worse for his broken wing, it was extremely frustrating and quite traumatizing in a way because I want to help him so bad and yet he keeps moving his wing no matter how much I try to hold him down, and no matter what approach I took he just wouldn't sit still and it frustrated me so much and got mixed feelings about the whole thing, worry, anger, sadness, disgust (cuz of the broken bone and the fatherless flesh looking almost rotting)...it was extremely overwhelming, and I just don't know what to do. He's patched up and his wounds seem to be healing, I'm feeding him healthy stuff, giving him meds, but I don't want this pigeon to not be able to fly again. That would break my heart completely. Please help with anything you can. I even made videos about him on my other channel (Omar Schekhli) if you'd like to see, his name is Bobby. I found him on Wednesday, June 23rd, unable to fly.

    • @RFRP
      @RFRP  Před 3 lety +3

      Oh no!! That sounds really stressful for you and the poor bird! I hope it heals. you are right that it would be sad if it could not fly again, but the more important thing is to try and save its life. My bird from this video can not fly normally. It can only fly about 6 feet into the air. However, it has a great life and I was the means of preserving and providing that life. You, too, are doing what you can to maintain and preserve that bird's life--thank you!! Hoping for the best outcome for you and your bird.
      Make sure the wound is disinfected before you bind the bone. You can also use a sock to keep the bird from moving its wings while the bone heals. cut a hole for the head of the bird at the toe of the sock; cut holes for the feet too. Keep it on for 2-3 weeks. Good luck, and keep me posted.

    • @LionEntity
      @LionEntity Před 3 lety

      @@RFRP thank you, Bobby (the pigeon) has the bandaid removed from his wing, so that his wound can heal first and be disinfected. I use disinfectant daily on his wounds, they are healing slowly but surely,and I do hope that somehow his wing would fix itself after the wound heals there. I'm feeding him a mixture of oats, some raisins and walnut, and egg shells. I grind them all into a powder and mix with lukewarm water. I never thought grounded eggshells would smell so nutty and good! Those are to replenish him with the calcium that he's lost due to the infection. Wanting to do so much for his wing was stressful and overwhelming, so now I've decided to just let it be and continue disinfecting the wound, while giving him his antibiotics twice a day, and feeding him. He has some pigeon pox which I'm trying to treat and hopefully cure with some antiviral paste, one of them is around his right eye which is annoying because it's completely covering his eye now. I just hope he heals, that's all. Do you think I should still use the sock for his wing? Or is it better to just keep it lose for him to move as he can?

    • @RFRP
      @RFRP  Před 3 lety +1

      If the wing bones are actually broken then they will need to be set for a few weeks in order to heal.
      Good idea with the calcium! Oh boy, that’s not good about the pox; it could die just from that alone. You have your work cut out for you. Ultimately you have to decide how much time and money you want to put into trying to save the little guy! Good luck!

      Feel along the length of the wing bones and try to determine if there is a break. If there is a break you can wrap it with the cotton cloth but it will need to be a little tight. It might help to have a small straight stick wrapped along the length of the broken bone for support.
      Some people have suggested using a sock to hold the wings tightly in place while it heals. Just cut a hole for the legs and vent at the base of the tail.

    P.s. if you have any advice at all for me I would love to hear it. I don’t have a clue how old Henry is - or why he likes to be in the house (I know we have a coastal storm now and it’s getting cold already but do I build him an outdoor cage? With a light?) any think you can think for a larger cage for him down the line? He seems to like the crate (dog crate), he actually walks right back in it whether I have it on the porch or in the house…..what another world this all is!

    • @RFRP
      @RFRP  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Happy to offer advice. Henry probably prefers being inside for safety I’d guess, especially while he’s still not at 100%. As for as an outdoor cage, that depends a bit on your space. Something on the back porch or balcony might be nice, but I’m not surprised that he likes his crate. It provides a safe “nest” site. One of the birds I rescued with a broken humerus clean through (I named her Karma) stayed in a small dog crate with wood chips for the bedding for nearly a month while she healed. I would let her out to walk around a bit. Now Karma is out in the loft with the other racing pigeons but she still loves me and coos to me when she sees me 🥰.

    • @RFRP
      @RFRP  Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@LizAlexy People use all kinds of floor material. The key for pigeon health is to keep the space dry and ensure the food and water are protected from being pooped on. The ideal would be to have a grate that serves as the floor so the droppings fall down through. Pup pad could go underneath. Honestly though, Use whatever works and is handy. Nothing wrong with straight pup pads! They probably soak up the moisture quite well.

    • @LizAlexy
      @LizAlexy Před 10 měsíci +1

      Thank you sooo much! I considered a larger bird cage which had the grates already on it, however, had read someone that pigeons prefer flat surfaces. The bird I found has the bone out and literally hanging by a thread like I can pull it out and I don't know what to do because the bone is protruding and ripped through skin and feather and is hanging out against the wing. I'm afraid to take it to the wildlife center because I think it's been like this for a month max before I left to another city and I noticed that it wasn't coming by to feed (it's my favorite pigeon). It was residing in the staircase at night since it can't fly and that is where we caught jt. I would really appreciate some advice since I don't know what to do at all and I want to cry. Don't want it to die. Already had another favorite of mine die from canker and the wildlife center had to put it down cause it was undergoing organ failure and in pain due to starvation and dehydration. The wildlife center might just euthanize it since its quality of life would go down if it can't fly anymore and survive if they were to release it in the park like they do

      @@justinTime077you could mix those seeds but I wouldn’t give one of them more than the other as I’m pretty sure they can be fattening if it’s just hemp or whatever hahaha quinoa is also a good mix in there and fresh fruit and veggies that’s what I did and I was able to release George within 5 weeks of him being rehabilitated with a wrap on his broken wing.
      I still see him with the flock that lives around my house (they don’t want to be alone pigeons are social creatures and do best in groups and the flock immediately was like ONE OF US 😭) when I throw seed out for all of them.
      I’m not an expert by any means and I don’t know what it would mean to just have an asymmetrical situation going on so my advise is what I did before I found this video link!
      Lo I joined a bunch of bird forums and obvi this video helped a lot when I figured out what was wrong, so I’d start with some research on what the wings look and feel like because maybe he just ran into your window and was stunned!
      One thing I learned was with a stray I didn’t want him to be friendly to me so I did approach slowly and he would try to flutter his wings but I didn’t want his brace coming off but I didn’t spend extra time trying to tame him, that wasn’t the goal, they’re wild and I knew it wasn’t in his best interest to try to have a “pet” pigeon so I simply changed out his food and water, cleaned shit but let him keep his instincts as he should.
      Another was the powder I wasn’t aware of at first that’s on their feathers, after a while they lose their waterproof coating that helps them survive in the rain, since he couldn’t bathe the 💩off of himself I’d see his feathers at the ends start to lose their ability to be waterproof so before I released him I made sure that he was fully capable of rolling the water off of him.
      And that was it, I know what he looks like but to him I’m just some random bitch with food hahaha and that’s perfectly fine!

      @@justinTime077 thanks for looking after the pigeon! Does it have a band on its leg? If so, if you can get all the info from the band it should be possible to track down the owner.
      They will eat flax, safflower, wheat, corn, barley, milo.
      Good luck!!

    • @justinTime077

      @@RFRP no band on the leg. I live in a New Mexican college city, so to me the odds of it being a pet are slim. Only one wing is missing some flight feathers, and where I live they are abundant, which comes as a burden via feathers through my AC vents. I bought it wild bird seed at the store. It has a few of those seeds in the mix. It’s been eating and drinking when it thinks we aren’t too close.
      I don’t believe it’s got a broken wing, just missing those flight feathers. It will spread its wings, look to the sky, and flap.. poor thing wants to get back to being a ‘free bird,’ but can’t. It can just get a foot or two of air.
      Will it survive off the seed mix, or does it need some kind of pidgeon kibble? We got it a spacious cage to rehabilitate in. It’s been getting it’s shit back together, but it can’t seem to fly without those feathers.

Amazing how people forget that they were crucial to delivering information in times of war, and before telephones. People remember and adore horses, but pigeons were equally important and firstly they are classed by most people as pests, and secondly we recently even caused the extinction of the passenger pigeon. Humans deserve to fail as a species

    So I seriously need some help. I have pigeons. I've been raising beautiful white and red and pied. So right now I have lost 2 young chicks and now have 2 more sick. I have looked up symptoms and sound like wet Pigeon Pox. No vet in my area will get involved in wild birds. I read there's a vaccine, but I dont know anything about vaccines or where to buy them. Please help I have isolated chicks, but I have 4 new hatchling and 4 others fledglings getting around. My whites are beautiful but the reds are rare and I don't want anything to happen to them.

      @RFRP  Před 3 lety +1

      There is a vaccine for pigeon pox. I would suggest calling Foys Pet Supplies 724-843-6889 (they specialize in pigeons) and they will be able to give you advice on how best to treat those that are infected and help isolate those that are not. Pox is a difficult one that thankfully I’ve never had to deal with. I wish you all the luck!!

      the feral pigeon my dog found or rather that round my dog with a busted wing was in shock when I found him. I put him in a box over night in a peaceful environment and got him help the next day. Now he’s getting cuddled during the day- I read small birds go into shock easily, I guess I got lucky and was calm and studied after I rescued him and learned the best thing to do but he’s still bandaged wing 3 weeks in but seems strong. I give him pigeon food but haven’t been clear how much and the avian vet didn’t have much to say on diet but firmly believed the bird came to us for help which humbled me considering our city has 8 million people and he’s strangely affectionate by day 3 and ongoing until today

      Linda, I’ve now successfully healed 3 broken wings. So take that for what it’s worth. I don’t have an x-ray machine at my house so I had to feel along the length of the bone to determine where the break(s) was. Was it painful?
