- Overlanding Through The San Juan’s | Engineer Pass, Poughkeepsie Gulch, Black Bear, Imogene
Last year I went on a trip through the San Juan Mountains of Colorado with my 2 best friends and created a multi part series to document it. With Summer ahead of us, I am releasing this to inspire you to get out there and enjoy this beautiful landscape.
My editing has come a long way since the initial release of this series, so some audio, coloring, and general editing has been remastered for a better experience. Let me know what you think!

Love seeing others enjoy this part of Colorado. I have been 4wheeling these trails for most of my life with my grandpa and dad, and now i am enjoying the scenery although I am 800 miles away.
Fantastic video, i appreciate the time, effort and passion put into this.
Thank you so much for watching it!
@@IndependenceOverland it was an absolute pleasure.
Nice video Tyler. Friends make these trips so special, and you have some good buddies there with you. Memories for a lifetime!
Yes sir, they are fantastic guys! A little wild but it helps liven me up a bit!
Another good one man. By far my favorite overlanding videos to watch.
Thank you! I appreciate that! New cool stuff coming very soon!
Allan, Stew and Doug. The wolfpack is back
haha! Its an honor! 😎
Epic!! Great shots and scenery! Thanks again for sharing your travels! Absolute legend!
Thanks buddy! 🙏
Everyone has that "one" friend. 😂😂
Haha, Kurtis certainly is that friend!
He reminds me of Allen from The Hangover.
Just saw this new release and 1 minute in I already know it's gonna be epic. thanks for sharing your adventures! I'm here for the mighty FJ and beautiful scenery :)
Thank you for checking it out!
This hour and a half flew by! Very well done!
Thank you for spending the time, and watching it the whole way through!
Wicked video, sweet 4x4 action, beautiful scenery 👍
Thanks for checking it out man!
Of course I watched the series when you first released them, but was nice to see it all put together like this.
Thanks man! Yeah it needed a rerelease, the long videos tend to get more views.
Great and fun video. We are heading back there July 16th and can’t wait. Hope to tackle the Wall with the Bronco while there.
You will probably have better luck on the wall than I did! I wouldn’t mind trying again on a dry day
This video is a visual journey into the heart of overlanding and the magic of the wild. The scenes of navigating challenging terrains and then finding respite in nature's embrace showcase the delicate balance between adventure and tranquility. It's a testament to the unbreakable bond between humanity and the untamed world.
Uhhhh wow. Well written! You need to be writing my description boxes for me!
Watching this just really goes to show the testament to engineering of these vehicles. Amazing videos Tyler! We live out here in summit county and have loved seeing a different viewpoint of this amazing state we live in!
Thanks for taking the time to check it out!
That rock crawl was insane. I am surprised you attempted it because of being top heavy. Great call though with winch.
Gotta call it before it damages anything! It was worth a shot though!
I found this video and absolutely loved the length. Thank you for not forcing me to watch 10-20 minute videos of an adventure that clearly lasted many hours. You get a follow and a new watcher.
Hey thanks for subscribing! Just know for future videos, I do release them in episodes and then I’ll make a long version of the video once all the editing is done. I do this because editing takes so much time, and I put in a lot of hours at my day job. So to please the algorithm on somewhat regular releases, I’ll release shorter episodes. I’ll have some new ones coming soon! Thank you!
Nice video “Nathan”!!😂
Your Bro from MO is a hoot!!👍
Haha! Yes, Kurtis is a real rascal!
In the '80s and 90s, my wife and I visited there and the Gunnison range every year. Our old, stock Landcruiser did it all. I used bias ply Summit tires at 12 lbs. They got us over sharp rocks, limbs, mud, etc.
Thanks for the memories guys.
I bet this area was just incredible back then! Back before the crowds! Thanks for watching!
@IndependenceOverland There were no crowds at all. Silverton was a mining town that didn't care for tourists. Then California's 'discovered' the San Juan's. Prices and crowds went up drastically.
A great group of people! Man sitting by that fire getting free live music !!!! Living the life
Not too shabby!
Love the San Juans! We go every year in the first or second weekend of October to see the colors of the landscape as they transition for fall!
Great Video Tyler! Sounds like next year when I come out there I could have a pretty good tour guide. LOL
It’s a pretty beautiful place! There’s a lot to see out there, I always see something new or find a new trail.
One of the best videos out there. Subd 👍🏽
Thank you for joining the ranks! 🙏
Love the video!! Curtis reminds me of a good friend of mine, he is a hoot to be around and always has a one liner to make everyone laugh. I'll have to bring him along on my next adventure.
I wanna say thanks I used to live there I miss it so much
You are very welcome, thanks for checking it out!
Just found your channel this morning. Awesome production, brother. Thank you for sharing your adventure. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for tuning in!
Great video! Will get out there eventually. Our 4Runner is fairly light, no rooftop tent or metal bumpers. Do have a hitch mount winch, dual batteries and a fridge. With a 3" OME lift 33" Baja Boss A/T tires it should do fairly well...I guess we will see...
It will do great!
You’ll be just fine.
Thanks for another great video! I'm heading out to Colorado next Friday to camp with all 3 of my kids for a week! Cant wait!
Awesome, enjoy yourself!
Fantastic film. Cinematography is stellar, crew and narration are awesome, and the location is like no other. It's been two years since I was in the San Juan's and I need to get back this summer for sure!
Now is the time! I’ve been seeing a lot of photos from this week and it’s got way more snow this year to melt off!
Man this reminds me of the first time I saw those animals in Colorado. Amazing experience. Can't wait to get out in the wilderness again
There’s still time this summer!
@@IndependenceOverland And here we are months later I'm watching this video again while I plan the itinerary for this year's 15-18 day trip around the US. Hoping to be able to add CO to the list! Keep up the great work!
Why did you try Poughkeepsie at an angle? A good recipe to end up on your roof. I've done it in an 87 4Runner on 30 inch tires and my 98 4Runner on 32's.
I really need to get out there. Maybe next summer if I can actually get some summer days off. Hopefully the economy will pickup and I don’t get paid off.
Fingers crossed for the economy!
Epic video! I’m heading to CO in a few months & this video definitely has me stoked to explore there
Oh man your gonna have a blast!
Great Video. HAHAHA Yo boy Kurtis is a funny dude!
You guys remind me of the movie Hnagover. haha
He is returning this year for another one its sounding like! He's quite a character for sure!
The mines did pollute the water but without the mining roads all those areas would be inaccessible, catch 22
Yup, I’m definitely aware. It’s beautiful water, pollutants aside!
Beautiful videos:)
Thank you! 🙏
I was in that area last week, great content.
Thank you!
Lovely trail n your video is amazing, scenic too.. many love from Pakistan
Thanks for watching! 🙏
great edit man. well done.
Thanks bud!
Love your Videos!!!
Thank you! 🙏
Very good. A hug from Portugal
Thanks for watching!
Love the high quality of your videos. Hoping to get my videos to look like this someday!
Thanks man! Keep hammering at it and youll do great. The biggest thing is just putting in the time!
Thank you for not geotagging...it really is an absolute cancer to our trail systems. Solid flick...Your narration makes this like the Overland version of Meateater with Steven Rinella...flows nicely
Thanks for checking it out!
Oh my gosh yall are crazy. We couldn't even make it up Yankee Boy Basin and had to walk to Twin Falls. I saved this video because it's entertaining and breathtaking scenery.
Thanks for checking it out Kelly! We are hoping to get out there again soon and see what we can get into!
We watch your video's and really enjoy them. Thanks you. BTW, when are you going to sell your FJ?🤫
Thanks for watching! The Fj will not be sold.
I thought as much. My wife said it might be. Thanks for the reply.
Closer to 3.5 seconds of falling time... so about 200ft... ish. That's deep.
Scary deep!
Awesome video. Well made in every way. I might have missed it in the video but what time of year (month) did you do these trails?
Thanks for checking it out man! It’s late July, right around now it starts getting pretty cold at night but still plenty doable.
Amazing video. When was this trip taken? This is a trip of a lifetime for me.
This was the end of July last year
Never be ashamed to use the winch ;)
Especially when you have whiskey and ice cream waiting
💯 priorities!
👍
Tommyknocker sighting
1:12:15, didn't see any sasquatch though.
Tommy knockers, tommy knockers, knockin at your door 🎶
How much weight are you at with the FJ? Looks pretty heavy with all the gear you’re carrying
She’s heavy, been a few years since I’ve weighed it. Over 6k
You mentioned the difference in trails you and Jess like to do. How do you guide yourself along those paths? Is there a trail difficulty rating you try to stick to?
If it’s me and Jesse, we will try hard stuff but I do research on a trail if it’s hard usually I’m not really much for trying trails and having to turn around, I’m all about getting to cool campsites. Some trails are rated as hard and end up being what I would call easy, and some are rated as hard and you need a 37” tire minimum to get through. So research is key.
Great video. What month did yall go?
This was late July
if the pain is too muchy ,you can take a little MIDOL ol cuz .🤣
Huh?
🤣i kid my friend ,it was a great vid
.the small hand injury ....
@@IndependenceOverland
but midol may help .....just saying
@@buddy1968100 haha I see! Sorry I forgot about the hand injury! It was definitely a serious one! 🤣🩹
Anyone who has a drawbridge for your front door, is not trying to not show off their drawbridge.
Haha definitely.
@@IndependenceOverland when you getting your Land Cruiser?
How did you get that camera angle that had half the frame as you and Curtis, and the other half the surrounding landscape? Just wondering how you mounted your camera for it 🤣
Happy to answer, but not sure which shot your referring to. Time stamp?
8:01, thanks!
@@FarOutOverland oh okay. So I have the Gopro mounted to the OS handle with the goose neck attachment, facing back at us in wide mode. I’m using the Rode Wireless Go system or else the audio would be useless.
One of my favorite Gopro camera angles!
@@IndependenceOverland that’s awesome. Definitely going to look into that! Thank you!
Who makes the oven you use? Propane or electric?
The oven is just a Coleman oven that goes on your stove. Cheap and works well enough! amzn.to/47C6hZR
at 18 min, where is that campsite??
I don’t share campsites, sorry!
@@IndependenceOverlandgood man. 👌🏻
I was a one man wolf pack and then i met more wolves and now we are a 3 man wolfpack 🤣🤙🏻😎🇺🇸
Haha, finally someone understands me! 🤣

37:16 cant break the front end when there is no weight on the front apparently.
I mean, it’s got a bumper, winch steel skids and 35s 🤷🏼♂️
Cool video. I watched it muted with captions so I wouldn't have to listen to the chintzy dramatic movie score.
If you like videos without audio, this definitely won't be the channel for you. Take care.
Short wheel base Tacoma, they don't make them like that anymore
Yeah that tiny wheelbase is sweet!
Just some basic advice, just say you guys don’t know how to fish instead of saying “there are zero fish in this lake” that couldn’t be further from the truth. That lake is loaded with trout. Comment said at timer mark 37:XX. I highly suggest learning tenkara Flyfishing. It’s easy to learn and set up and your success rate will go way up! Overall video well done, hangin with the boys is the key!
I am Tenkara fishing at the end of the video. My friend Kurtis didn't grow up fishing, but I certainly did. I spent the vast majority of my childhood fishing with my dad on lakes, rivers and streams.. I'm willing to bet my old man is on his bass boat as I type this. Maybe there are some fish in this water, but it is polluted with minerals from old mines and with polarized glasses you couldn't see a single fish on a cool overcast evening. More happens on these trips than what you see in videos. So saying zero fish isn't far off, they certainly weren't thriving there.
If you "spotter" dosent have the sense not to say "OH GOD" WHILE YOUR DOING THE OBSTACLE WELL...................
Haha, that was my buddy behind the camera who doesn’t do this kind of stuff. He watched from far away while chewing his fingernails off from anxiety watching his doofus friends tear their vehicles up 😂
Yeah I love seeing a bunch of inexperienced 4 wheelers take on the San Juans…
The mighty keyboard warriors return. 🤣🤣
Hey just wanted to point out that your calculations for depth on the rock through the grating are wayyyy off. Terminal velocity takes time to hit and is based on weight. A person takes 12 seconds to hit tv @ roughly 180mph. That rock would be closer to 8 seconds at 125mph. Wouldn't want to fall into it either way. But your calculations were based on the rock was already at tv when it hit the grating.
They weren’t my calculations, but thanks for clarifying for viewers.
Be smart even when you are being an idiot. That should be a bumper sticker or t-shirt
Haha, I will make that happen!
