The Senate Guards are one of the greatest institutions in the Republic, dating back to the Old Republic era and into the Imperial and New Republic age. Influenced by Mandalorians, they would be the most powerful organization out there, but eventually they became inept, and replaced by the Red Guard and Royal Guard.

Well cad bane was the best bounty hunter in the galaxy after jango died, and royal guards were trained like spartans and then forced to fight eachother to the death in a gauntlet, royal guards are no joke, there was a scene where they even intimidated vader
The blue space cowboy has one of the most badass outfits in the whole series.
One of my absolute favorite moments in Revenge of the Sith is when Yoda just casually takes out Palpatine's elite guards with the wave of his hand.
Those red guards weren’t the same ones that palpitine had during the empire. The ones in that scene were just stormtroopers wearing different armor
That is a lame Disney excuse and we all know it. The newly crowned Emperor of the galaxy wouldn't have just anyone guard him. Besides, it doesn't matter if those are the most battle hardened warriors in the galaxy's history, that is Jedi Grandmaster Yoda. If he enters the room you've already lost.
@@reddeaddude2187 the empire were literally just officially formed from a government that was corrupted for centuries at that point, where's Sidious getting the time to train good guard? He likely just keep them around for looks in the beginning before he can have more trained guards to replace them with. Also what does Disney have to do with the prequel?
@@slimetank394 Palpatine always plans several steps ahead. Do you honestly think he wouldn't have the best guards credits could buy? I say it's a lame Disney excuse because Disney likes to retcon old Star Wars canon to fit their god awful "storytelling."

I remember reading somewhere that Palpatine used the incident in which Cad Bane held the Senators hostage as an excuse to start phasing out the Senate Guard to replace them with the Coruscant Guard (shock troopers). He did this because the Senate Guard were selected from systems outside the political influence of the Republic (much like the Varangian Guard in the Byzantine Empire in real life) so that they didn't have political loyalties that could be swayed by politicians or other Republic leaders. Palpatine hated this because he needed a guard that were utterly devoted to him and him alone, so he replaced the Senate Guard briefly with the clone shock troopers and then with the Imperial Guards during the Imperial era.
he also had some loyal senate guards serve as the red guard, basically what would become the imperial guard
They might not be the best but they got one of the coolest uniforms and weapons by far. I'm writing a fan fiction book that has my character's father as a member of them.

I noticed how the senate guard number was a reference to George Orwell's 1984, with the imperial senate guards acting almost like the thought police, and Palpatine like Big Brother was watching and listening to everything
The Imperial Senate Guards were pretty cool; a lightsaber pike, some training in handling lightsaber-wielding enemies, and their job was to keep the Senate in line.
The Senate guard cannon fodder for any person willing to attack the senate building that pretty much sums up their role and skill.
I wouldn't call a failure. There were competent guards like Sagoro Autem.

I have the idea of the senate guards' armor, weapons, and traditions actually originating from the wars between Coruscant and the Mandalorians, dating as far back as before the taungs' expulsion from Coruscant. Their martial training is specifically designed around circumventing armor, as it would be completely impractical for them to carry the weapons necessary to get through beskar. That said, it's just my idea and I doubt I'd ever get to write for Star Wars.

The Senate Guards also got a humiliating and ironic new job. They were assigned to guard a museum on Coruscant. It's ironic because they were part an old government that was replaced with an Empire.

I still find it funny how Cad Bane just entered the building through the front door in the loudest way possible and yet the alarm wasn’t triggered.
I think a big problem is that the commando training program was 4 weeks. WTF kind of special forces training is only 4 weeks?
Yes, I am accounting for the fact that normal Senate Guard training has already been completed at this point and this is training on top of that, for those that don't know, that is how 99% of special forces work too where they start special forces training either after basic training or a selection/fitness assessment is incorporated into the SF training to weed people out prior to the actual combat training phase, so my point is sound.
Whether it is U.S. Navy Seals, British or Australian SAS, or Canadian JTF2 you are looking at many months, sometimes over a year of training. Even less militant analogues to Senate Guard like U.S. secret service go through 13 weeks of intensive training followed by 18 weeks of special agency training course for a total of nearly 8 months worth of training on top of usually prior military or federal agency experience elsewhere.
Closest real-world equivalent to Senate Guard is the U.S. TSA so...... can't imagine why they failed :P.
I work for the TSA. We are basically cannon fodder to the rest of the U.S. We even get bullied by CBP. I even work with some who would sabotage others to get the promotion.

I do like the scenes in the prequels of them accompanying both Valorum and Palpatine; they definitely evoke imagery of historical accounts of the Roman soldiers who would accompany a Roman Consul in their number and formation, flanking the politician in two lines. Though not explicit in-universe, the implicit out-of-universe context of the political ruler holding fasces (represented by guards carrying bushels of sticks while in the Pomerium of Rome in place of weapons, is sort of brought to mind as well. I know Lucas drew pretty heavily on the decline and fall of Rome for the prequels and little details like this from scripting and art are nice to pick up on for history nerds. And obviously, out of universe their helmets do look a lot like those of the Centurions of the Roman Legions.

The Senate Commandos are a joke in the Clone Wars, but not regular senate guards. They put up a good fight with the commando droids on Mandalore
Those weren’t regular Senate Guards, they were apart of the Senate Honor Guard which is why they have the black cloaks with closed helmets compared to the dark blue cloaks and open helmets of regular senate guards.

Back in the early eighties, when Scout Trooper pistols and action figures were sold in department stores, by far the coolest looking one was the Royal Guard.

These are great guards and organizations, too bad they got corrupted and such, only to be out done and better by Clone Shock Troopers, to be phased out as Storm Shock Troopers

I personally don’t like the Clone Wars era senate guard armor. Looks to me like an incorrect clone trooper, but the DC-15A with a wooden stock is nice looking. It’s strange that they don’t use an older blaster and instead go with presumably a custom run of a new one. At that point just get some standard blasters.
They’re senate commandos not regular senate guards.
@@Deerhunter60641 They aren't particularly different except for the commandos having a slightly different helmet and being selected from the best senate guards. They also use the same weapons as well. They still look like off clone troopers regardless of what you call them.
Remember, they are GUARDS, not front-line fighters.

I believe that the imperial Royal guard served a greater purpose and well way more elite then the Senate guard by the time of the empire Imperial Royal guard‘s what is the most elite unit within the empire and they put guards to shame and unfortunately the Senate guards were assigned to a museum during the era of the empire mean that they were nothing but relics of bygone era
