Beautiful, haunting and heartfelt. My mother lost her two younger sisters as teenagers, either on the way to or coming back from their prom. This is a fact I know, a fact associated with the two old school pictures that used to be on my grandmother's mantel. It has almost never been spoken of in my family and I have no idea of my sister's suffering - both for her sisters, and for having to be my grandparents' only remaining child. Thank you so much for this, Russ.
This song does an excellent job of painting a picture and the chorus is intense. The fact that the chorus is written like an actual thought, straight to the point rather than with metaphor and allegory just makes it even more poignant. Russell and Alan deserve credit for making me tear up with this. Very few songs make me this emotional.
was just thinking this last week about my lost sibling-- if introduced to someone with her name, I tend to blank it, or misremember it, deep down I refuse to let them have that same name---funny how these lost lives stay a silent present with us. This song really captures that. I'm sure guilt is the last thing they'd like to leave with us, but that's what we tend to hang on to, which is why songs like this can do a power of good.
I’m so sorry your mum and dad had to live with that sorrow but I’m glad the terrible things in life brought them together. I can imagine Raewyn running on the beach and laughing and I can also feel your mom’s anguish at the bottom of those stairs in panic at that moment she knew her sister was gone. I wish I had known my mom and dad’s lives a little better too. As children it’s not really a concern of ours but I’m glad now your mum has you and that you hug her when she needs it. I love this song. Raewyn, beautiful and young, makes me happy but the song always brings me to tears when the story unfolds for her, Uncle Charlie, you and your parents who loved them.
I think it's a wonderful tribute to your loved ones, Russell. It could be sad, but I've always thought that I prefer to remember my loved ones and the life they had, than just stand still in the moment they left me and cry because they are no longer with me. Of course they are missed, but I like it more that we all remember the things they did when they lived with me. So I guess that for you, Russell, must be the same or similar. 😘😘❤🩹❤🩹🦋🌹🌹
Your heartfelt account is truly moving Russell. The story of your parents losses and the unspoken pain it brought to your family is both poignant and powerful. It's remarkable how this song captures such deep feelings and paints a vivid picture, especially with the straightforward chorus. I agree with your perspective on remembering our loved ones for the lives they lived rather than just their departure. It's a beautiful tribute to cherish their memories. This song's ability to touch our heart so deeply is a testament to its beauty and resonance. Russell and Alan have truly created something extraordinary. On the subject of Suicide. Can I kindly request that if anyone is discussing this topic, we approach it with sensitivity? Rather than using the phrase 'committed suicide,' which might unintentionally stigmatise, could we consider using 'taken their own life'? This subtle language adjustment demonstrates our understanding of the complexities involved.
There's a black and white photograph of Raewyn, I know the place and the year that it was taken. Gosford before all the houses, Forrester's was still uncrowded. Footprints, often only your own. Over the sand dunes and into the mangroves, he gets his camera out, and that's where Uncle Peter goes. He took this photograph of you, with your wild hair. Just back from America, in your print top and your flares. So much light in your eyes, no-one read the despair. A scream in the night, my mother shaking with tears. Her little sister, pouring down the stairs. Oh Raewyn, is no longer here. first chorus How little do I know of the pain of my Mother, If I'm now just thinking if I'd lost a brother. I meant to indicate my mother's suffering, not my sister's.
😥
OK b'y's, one of you can act and the other can sing.
You both better not switch careers because it just don't work.
