      I searched on CZcams and realised that there aren’t any guides to help advise pickers on how best to acquire locks to practice picking. Would you make a video about that? I think it’d be really helpful.

      I want to know if there's a lock you CAN'T pick? Would you be able to walk up to anyone's front door and pick their lock? Why don't locksmiths ever pick the lock when someone has lost their keys?

    • @Phred_Phlintstoner

      @@lauralishes1 sitting in a chair all nice and comfortable, being able to maneuver the lock around to where it is in the best position possible, and picking a lock on a door that you have to hunch over or kneel down to reach, out in the rain or snow, with not much light to see anything, with the door blocking most of the room you would like to have your body and a hand in, are two totally different things. It's like kicking a football once and thinking you are good enough to play professionally. If you want to make ANY lock harder to pick, install it. Also most if not almost all locksmiths get paid by the job, not by the hour. So they want to get you in and get to the next job. Some locksmiths will pick a lock, but most these days would rather just drill and then sell you another. That makes them the most money. Edit: that's not saying that locknoob can't pick most front door locks. He is a great picker. It's just easier when you can control everything about where, how, and when you pick that lock.

    • @penfold7800
      @penfold7800 Před 2 lety

      @@lauralishes1Locksmiths do pick locks sometimes. But it's usually better for them to drill out the lock and sell you a more secure lock replacement. Its more money for them and better for you. Also, if a locksmith turns up and picks or bypasses you lock in a couple of minutes, its not very reassuring for you. Also, there are some emergency entry people out there who don't pick locks at all. They just get you in by destroying the lock and then fit a temporary replacement that's typically not very secure. So be wary of that.

    Thanks Ash. Excellent picking! 🙂👍 It's a nicely-designed lock, which has some sensible thought behind its design and manufacture. Kudos to Prolock for that. 🙂 A cynic can only assume that Prolock sent you a carefully-chosen lock with excellent bitting. The next step, therefore, is to go out and buy another lock, anonymously, to see how it compares with that one. It would be very interesting, if you were to do that, in the interests of fairness.

    Great video. I like how you explained how the bitting makes it harder to pick the pins in the back. This also is the first video i remember, in which you used more than one pick on a lock. Something that isn't talked about an aweful lot either. I think it is potentially a bit of a trap for beginners to try to use only one pick and one pick only. It would be lovely to see a LockNoob video where You talk about the process of finding the right pick(s) for a lock.

    My first thought is to wonder if ALL their locks have that extreme bitting and the spools and anti-bump pin (I really liked that, great design/idea), or if they chose that particular lock for you to showcase.
    Thank you for letting us know you rehearse before picking live. Though I miss the candid errors Bill used to make, especially his funny gutting disasters.
    Although you review a lot of complete sets, I noticed your chosen picks are from different brands (I believe you used multipick and Peterson in this video).
    I love that front follower with the diagonal slot, better control of which pin is accessed than exposing all the pins at once or withdrawing the follower one pin at a time.

    Love your videos of these euro cylinders. Wish I could get a better selection of them in the US, since most of our non-padlocks are kind of crap here. Does anyone actually know of a good retailer in the US that sells these, or one outside of the US that ships at a reasonable cost? I hate paying $25 shipping for a lock that might cost about the same or even less.

    People who think learning to pick locks means your a criminal or dishonest in some way when the truth is it’s the challenge of learning to pick harder and harder locks besides I’ve never picked a lock that I don’t own or I have specific permission from the lock owner. I say that because I worked as maintenance at a self storage facility and had to cut several locks for the owner or for unit auctions.

  • @andrewharwood7843
    @andrewharwood7843 Před 2 lety +1

    Hey Lock Noob, great video as always. Being lazy asking this rather than googling. However, I have never seen an explanation as to why you can't open a euro cylinder lock. if there is a key inserted in the other side. Also is this unique to this type of lock design?

    • @Keneo1
      @Keneo1 Před 2 lety

      Yeah, I have opened and looked at a few of these locks and the cam, but I also still don’t fully understand how the cylinder takes the cam and connects to it and what is stopping you from using a bypas tool on one side to rotate the cam if the other side has a key and can rotate (or just why the cam can’t free spin)
      Would be interesting to see a good video on how this works, perhaps with a 3D model ;)

    • @vryko8567
      @vryko8567 Před 2 lety

      The short answer is - you can. you just need to pick up the cam once you pick the lock to actually open a door.
