  • Comparing brilliance, dispersion and sparkle of Moissanite and Cubic Zirconia stones in direct and indirect sunlight. Apologies for the reflections of the plastic film. It doesn't seem to detract much from the brilliance or sparkle of the gems.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about hardness. Diamond is harder than Moissanite and both are harder than Cubic Zirconia. That is mainly a measurement about scratch resistance. All three are much harder than quartz, the typical stuff in dust, sand and dirt that can scratch glass, paint or even some metals if they are not cleaned properly. So, all three stones are going to be pretty resistant to scratch and swirl marks from careful daily wear, as long as they are not tossed in a box in contact with other gemstones that might be harder. Despite what you may read on some websites, hardness is NOT durability.
Toughness or durability from cracks and chips is very different. For example, both types of Jade are barely harder than Quartz and much softer than CZ, Moissanite, and Diamond. Even so, while it is easier to scratch Jade, it is more difficult to crack or chip Jade. That is a main reason why Jade is valued for carvings with the extremely fine and intricate details. There is no one method or rating to assess durability in everyday use. Diamond, Moissanite, and CZ are all more durable than many gemstones, but there are differences. PSI ratings, fracture, and cleavage planes are terms that are sometimes used to compare stones, while resistance to heat, acids and solvents is also a factor. Some websites list a "Toughness" rating, but unlike hardness values, these ratings may not be consistent from one source to another. Even a tough pure material can be of poor quality in a gemstone, making it less durable in use. So, take these ratings with a grain of salt and research carefully.
Fire, brilliance and sparkle are a little easier to assess, as they relate directly to physical measurements of the material. Refractive Index relates to how much a material bends light. When a gem is cut into an ideal shape for the material, more light going into the stone can reflect out the same direction, making it appear brighter. When light is bent in this way, Dispersion is the property that determines how well the light is split into rainbow colors, like through a prism. This is why some gemstones show flashes of color much more than others. These are more subjective factors, as one person may love a bright, colorful material and cut, while another may not. Moissanite has higher refraction and dispersion than either Diamond or Cubic Zirconia. Some may prefer this, others may prefer how Diamond or CZ looks, and it also highly depends on how well the stone is cut to bend the light properly for that material.

4:55 : i think that here you say wrong: cubic zirconia would be on the left side while moissanite on the right one. Isn't so?
